Workman's fastball velocity is trending in the wrong direction. I have serious doubts about his ability to stick as a starter while sitting 89.

As far as Votto Yeah Choo was never on for him last year. Some guys drive in runs some don't. He is your perfect guy for your 2 hole someone like him or Boggs. Both outstanding hitters but not the guys I would want when I needed a big run driven in. He has an over 1000 OPS with runners on, including a ~ 250 ISO, for his career. His C&L numbers are the same as his career number. His high leverage split gets you a 372 avg, over 300 ISO, and a wOBA of nearly .500. Awesome analysis there.

Good thing we are batting Holt leadoff since he can't drive in runs.

"but I really like him." --------------------------- I'm not sold yet on Ben. The Punto deal was impressive but there's last winter that didn't do anything for me. I really hope he's the real thing and makes all the right moves given the state of the team in a few weeks. I can't see Ben being anything but a seller. People will accept significant change if it is in return for legit young talent. I'm looking for a Wil Myers-type return if I gave up a Lackey to a contender. I want something great from Detroit if I rented them Koji which could bring them a WS.

Welp, that's the way things are going. Bases loaded, no outs, top of the order up, and nothing. Sigh.

This team is losing even while winning. It's remarkable.

And how much of those stats are driven by his ability to take a walk because of his great eye, even with guys on base, because pitchers are loathe to pitch to him. I believe in these type of numbers....but saber guys are smart enough to understand that these numbers don't correlate to whether he...in fact....drives in more or less runs that he could or should..relative to maximizing his value to accomplish team wins.

After reading some more of the CBA analysis on SOSH, I think I'm wrong and the Lackey's contract might not roll over, as the section of the CBA I quoted might not apply to him. In which case sitting out a year and coming back in 2016 becomes a much more viable proposition. It's very big of you to acknowledge that jmei. Should the MLBPA respond to my inquiry though, I'll still post it. Again, it was a lively discussion about some of the more arcane corners of the CBA - which, oddly enough, I find interesting.

Very little of his .372 avg or >300 ISO relate to the number of walks he takes... It has nothing to do with sabr guys seeing only numbers, etc etc etc. Votto is a stupid example of a guy who doesn't drive in runs. For Christ's sake, he was #3 and #6 in his league in RBIs in the not very distant past. Could someone be that guy? Sure - I doubt it. But, I typically ignore those kind of arguments. Votto, however, is actually very awesome with runners on, in the clutch, etc. So, this particular argument is just stupid.

I want something great from Detroit if I rented them Koji which could bring them a WS. I really like Ben too. We have no bad contracts anymore thanks to him, the farm system is solid and he has made some shrewd moves. The Peavy deal was good in my opinion too. Yeah he isn't that good anymore but it was an important move in securing the #1 seed last year. Iglesisas and Garcia are both out for the season by the way. I think ownership has a lot to do with it, but there wasn't really a lot Ben could've done last offseason that would've drastically altered the fate of this team, short of something like signing Tanaka AND Choo. Last offseason would've been better if Drew signed with another team and maybe we got the Pirates lotto pick for a reliever. My bigger beef is with Farrell... he has been making too many weird moves lately. Something doesn't seem right.

This was actually a series of blog posts on both Tyler Cowen's blog and Jack Balkin's, years ago, if I recall correctly. (Two blogs ... if I can guess correctly... you may enjoy.)

I'd have to say that Brandon Workman is the Sox player I'm most pulling for this season. The fact that he wasn't ranked in the Top 10 of our prospects last year says something not only about the depth of our system but also about him as a player.

Stephen Drew, Kendrys Morales with no minor league ramp up, steps into Twins line-up and is currently 2-5. No oblique complaints either.
