Before I comment further on Napoli, I just want to be sure of something. This isn't the "Choose Your Adventure" thread right? I'm not saying I WANT to trade Napoli. I'm just trying to get in the heads of the FO. Given what we know: 1. Boston has added Sandoval and Ramirez at very high AAV 2. Boston STILL needs 2 SPs (and, at least, one of them will likely require more than just money to acquire) 3. They have other needs including the bullpen and have been rumored to be willing to offer Miller big money. 4. Victorino and Craig, 2 other possible trade candidates, are not going to get you full value given injury and performance issues (insert your joke here). 5. Even Cespedes' value is decreased by the inability to make the QO . . . trading Napoli is a real possibility. Not a wish. I'm not a mod and not trying to dictate what goes in each thread. Just trying to explain my usage. I agree And packaging him with a prospect could possibly net the best SP deal

What if the Red Sox trade Cespedes, keep Victorino in RF and make Betts a utility playaer o start the season? He could cover starts across the OF and IF.

Lavarnway DFA'd... Seems like a good enough guy but this was long over due. Hopefully, he gets a chance somewhere.

Was Austin Maddox hurt last year? He only had 21ip Google is your friend, and that's all I'll say.

Another bungle by the FO; you'd think that a 23-yr old C with 30+ HR could have fetched something. Of course, we have a GM who when approached by the Astros last offseason inquiring about Carp, "We think he has more value to us than anyone else". 6 months later - DFA

Cespedes & another piece(s) for Iwakuma feels like a best case scenario IMO. Gets you a pitcher to fill that #2 spot on one year, and then either you extend him or have another year to hopefully see which AAA guy takes that next step.

One caveat for Betts: I'd trade him and Owens for Bryce Harper in a second. Hmmmm. Not sure, Harper has a higher ceiling to be sure, but he's very injury-prone and that's problematic for a young player. And his 2014 was pretty mediocre. But not crazy

The Red Sox were hoping he would provide the same influence last year, but the wheels fell off the entire team.

I wonder if Ben is having any buyers remorse with regards to Castillo... He's basically a huge unknown that you have to play instead of keeping Cespedes. I'd say you could trade him, but that would possibly do a lot of damage in their pursuit of other international free agents of his ilk. The following lineup would be much stronger than Castillo... I think (only because we don't know what Castillo is)..
1. Betts (cf) 2. Pedey (2b) 3. Ortiz (dh) 4. Ramirez (lf) 5. Sandoval (3b) 6. Cespedes (rf) 7. Napoli (1b) 8. Bogaerts (ss) 9. Vazquez (c)
The team does need pitching so I understand the use of Cespedes to bring back good pitching and that may be the best team, but I'm just talking lineup.

Lavarnway had 15 HR's in 850+ PA's in the minors the last 3 seasons, and 5 in 301 career PA's in the majors. He's no longer a big power threat, and there was no real reason to move him when he hit 30 HR's a few years back. Then he fractured his hamate bone in his wrist in 2014, which makes the chances of his two or three year power returning even less

I don't think anyone could have anticipated he'd hit his peak at age 23.

Just match the damn thing and keep working on the Trade for the second starter... Unless you know you can sign Scherzer for something similar. I'd rather Mad Max anyways..

They know exactly when a player is going to peak and should know to trade them at the perfect time and they should also make believers out of any GM and get exactly who they want for said player.

I can live with missing out on Leater but i just hope we're sensible and don't give up much for Hamels.

Missing out on Lester would be a big loss. It's the one frontline guy you could get buy only using money (no prospects, don't lose a draft pick). Then you could put those other resources to use.

I don't know but if he's worth 23 today and they know the money coming into the game is changing soon and they will pay the tax for two years then yes he's worth 25m

I can live with missing out on Leater but oboist hope we're sensible and don't give up much for Hamels. That's my fear, too. If they don't sign Lester or Scherzer, there will be a lot of media pressure to overpay for Hamels. I wouldn't give up top prospects for a pitcher with a five year $100 million contract. It's beginning to feel a lot like December 2010 to me; I hope I'm wrong.

If Hanley can fetch $22M a year, I do not think anyone thought the Sox 6/$110-$120M offer would get it done. I think the Sox should go 6/$150M.

And if Scherzer and Lester sign before they trade for Hamels, they'll likely deal Cespedes for a pitcher before they make a deal for Hamels. In general I don't think Hamels will cause a bidding war though. There's several other good FA pitchers and trade targets available.
