David Ross on Christian Vazquez: "I'm anxious to be part of the catching corps with him." Plans to attach himself to Vazquez going forward.

Vazquez to catch 4 times a week, Ross 3 for the forceable future, per JF Seems like a good ratio. The only question is about durability for Ross, but Pierzynski caught the bulk of the games in the first half. He should be able to hold up for 50+ games this season.

Congrats to Vazquez. He put in the work and did his time and now he gets a huge opportunity. Fortunately the starter tonight is a pitcher he knows well.
Ps: let's hope the offense shows up tonight.

@jtomase 5m Sometimes a vet gets cut and the reaction is funereal. But Red Sox clubhouse seems pretty upbeat today, post-AJ, fwiw. Just an observation.
Winning streak coming…NOW!

Good riddance to the hacker. His .286 OBP, his wretched defense and general crappy throw your teammates under the bus attitude won't be missed. That's the one signing I really hated when it happened. Of course I liked the Mujica signing when it happened so what do I know.
Anyways it's time for Vazquez to get his feet wet in the majors. I'm sure he'll struggle mightily with the bat but if he's going to now is a fine time for that to happen. Hope his bat is working by later this year or 2015. Look forward to much better defense behind the plate and a deterrent to the opposition's running game.
Hopefully within a month, they'll either DFA or by some miracle be able to dump Drew and perhaps we'll see Marrero by August or September (or even Cecchini again).

If AJ was a clubhouse cancer he did a great job of hiding it on the field and in his comments to the media. Nothing I saw that would lead me to believe he was a bad teammate.
Glad we are moving forward into the new era. Vazquez caught DLR before so a perfect pitcher to get his first game with.

Lou Merloni tweeted that the pitchers have been complaining about AJP for a while now. What pitcher would like throwing to him? He doesn't block pitches in the dirt and he yanks his glove all over the place catching even good pitches. I have wanted him gone all year. I am very happy that Ross will get at least half a year to mentor Christian.

I'd suggest we stay away from the clubhouse confidential stuff and just stick to the onfield results. Those are stark enough. None of us has any way of knowing much about what goes on behind closed doors.

Signing AJP was a distant, DISTANT #2 on my list of personnel I thought the Sox would never be crazy enough to add, after Valentine. And then it happened. #3 - Podsednik.

What will the Sox do for a late inning pinch runner now that AJP is gone?

He was doing nothing offensively lately and is below-average behind the plate. After this horrific week I think they decided it was time to make moves and AJ was the 1st of what I assume will be many.

So many times we seemed to have someone on the ropes with 12 pitch abs then up comes the hacker. That won't be missed. And the shaky d. And the pressers. He needed to stay in the background much more.

The bolded is a good point, and I doubt it's a coincidence. Farrell also said that Ross would be catching Lester.

I assume Sox will hang onto AJP for the full 10 days before releasing him. That brings us to the 19th and over 100 games x 2 catchers is a lot of chances for a catcher to break a finger.

Which they had before getting rid of AJP, right? Butler is not exactly dead weight. They have options.

Our long national nightmare has ended. Watch the team suddenly go on a 12-2 run and be just 4 games out July 31. 11-2

This day was coming ever since Rich Hill had a rehab stint in Salem and came back raving about Vazquez. Already impacting the game with his defense tonight. Not to mention (or I guess, yes to mention) how much having JBJ's range and arm really screws with baserunners, I expect a lot of short leads and hesitation on fly balls going forward.
Would love to see some numbers how many total bases a plus defensive catcher (or CF) saves. Gotta be 2 or more a game, right?

I spent a lot of time seeing what contenders had at catcher (since a lot of them could use Ross), and the only team for whom AJP might represent an upgrade worth bothering with even at backup catcher was the Mariners. And that was using his relatively rosy ZiPS Rest of Season projection! If only one team exists that has an interest in a player, he indeed has no value. Now, one interesting thing about the timing is that it will give Ross two weeks to work with CVaz even if Ross gets traded. And as I noted in the fire sale thread, with Ross able to knock 0.35 off the ERA of any starting pitcher just via pitch framing, if there are two contenders who know that, he has surprising trade value. Tigers, Dodgers, Angels may be ringing Ben's phone off the hook.

If I was a contender I would definitely be calling BC and asking about Ross. The question then becomes, how much do you have to get in return to make it worth trading him as opposed to having him around as a mentor for Vazquez. Good situation either way.

If you're implying that they can still bring Pierzynski back, they can't. He needs to either be traded or put on waivers and released when he clears. If that isn't what you're implying... I have no idea what you're talking about.

Which they had before getting rid of AJP, right? Butler is not exactly dead weight. They have options. I was talkin' 'bout Jonathan Lucroy breaking a finger, not David Ross. AJP is fairly good 3rd-string C for somebody's September playoff run. If they want him.
