I'm worried that the moves so far (including Peavy) are only improving this year's team....

To me, that sounds like an indication that he was a problem in the locker room or there was absolute zero interest from any team who might need a catcher, given that Ben didn't wait until 7/31.

Rather surprised they DFA him, but that still allows them to make some kind of deal. Wouldn't be surprised if he was becoming bothersome in the club house.

Our long national nightmare has ended.
Watch the team suddenly go on a 12-2 run and be just 4 games out July 31.

I wonder if Swihart will stay in Portland until after the all star game. It should be interesting to see which Salem catcher gets bumped. Might be a tell on how Blair's conversion is going.

This just made my day. Bye bye, AJ. A round of applause for the front office moving on sooner rather than later. I can't wait to see Vasquez at the MLB level.

Onward Christian Vasquez!

I think they'll wait until after the all-star break to bring up Swihart. I would expect Portland to go with Hernandez (currently the 3rd catcher in Pawtucket), plus Brenly/Spring and leave the Salem catchers as is.

Good luck, Vasquez. Hope people are patient with his bat. Good move.

I hated AJ as much as everybody else and didn't want him on this team no matter what his production was but to the best of my knowledge his teammates always liked him and it was the opposing players who hated him so much. We loved Youk but a lot of other teams hated him almost as much.

Problem there though is that there are 3 'prospect' catchers at Salem. Assuming the Sox see something that hasn't shown up yet with Escobar. ADD: It would also allow for Romanski to get bumped. He really needs to get bumped, needs a bigger challenge.

Blair will turn 25 this offseason, although that's ok for a catcher. Blair could be promoted to Portland but I cannot see leaving Weems and Escobar as the only catchers in Salem. They could, however, bump Blair to Portland and move Hernandez to Salem and let Brenly float between Portland and Pawtucket. If they do that, Blair would be an odds-on favorite to go to the AFL (he's a free agent at the end of the year). Edit: And I disagree that Romanski "needs to be bumped". There's no one pushing Romanski from below and Romanski is not dominating the SAL.

Good luck, Vasquez. Hope people are patient with his bat. Good move. Given Pierzynski's truly anaemic OPS, all of .623, Vazquez can't be much worse. And the glove should play very well. I'm as happy as a (Pacific razor) clam. This was a while coming. Ross is just the guy to buddy up to the new kid and take him under his wing. Add: Just noticed Hatfield's Twitter post about Vazquez missing the Futures at Fenway... that's because his futures is now. Add2: ... and all the rookies in the lineup tonight, including RLDR? Sign me up.

If we are going to lose, then lets do it with youngin's. That a word....maybe in Louisana?

There's no one pushing Romanski from below and Romanski is not dominating the SAL. Romanski is from a decent baseball school, San Diego State and is doing fine offensively: .299/.336/.385/.721. Not dominating but not bad. It did agree with promoting Weems over him but that was a tools thing in my mind.

Smart move by the Sox. I am sure the decision was made with eyes to the future, but they were ( or are) a boring team going nowhere. This is not great for maintaining interest and attendance. People get excited about the prospects and a youth movement. It gives them something to hope for and watch. Let's face it; most need spectacles, not that there is anything wrong with that. Of course, I am a cynic and these guys are really sharp about PR and getting fan interest, which is important for their bottom line.

Hernandez activated in Pawtucket.
My guess is that they'll leave Swihart in Portland until, say, August 1. Getting Dan Butler some starting reps isn't a bad thing.
Below Portland, there really isn't much that interests me at the catcher position. Carson Blair might get promoted to Portland, but Spring and Brenly are fine behind the plate there.
There is some roster pressure that could stand to be relieved in Lowell and the GCL. But Coste is an Org guy and could be put on the DL to make room. And nobody in Lowell is beating the door down to Greenville either.
Fwiw, Hernandez, Spring, Brenly, Escobar, and Coste have all pretty explicitly been used as org guys (phantom DL stints, etc.).

The way this season is going, it would kinda be funny if the White Sox claim him and he hits two homers tonight against us.

Good luck, Vasquez. Hope people are patient with his bat. Good move. Given Pierzynski's truly anaemic OPS, all of .623, Vazquez can't be much worse. But, Pierzynski is the backup DH, he must be a good hitter.I wonder if the Sox were seriously waiting to get Carp back before making that move, or if the timing of getting our real backup DH (and only other LHpowerH) back is just a coincidence. ADD: If he doesn't get claimed, but he does get signed for the minimum, that takes us off the hook for like 250k, right? That'd be somethingat least.
