Is Castillo viewed to be a better overall option than someone like Yasmani Tomas? Obviously Tomas is a lot younger and likely not as ready as Castillo but I feel like I've heard a lot more about Tomas.

This guy hasn't put up numbers anywhere near Abreu's Cuban level performance. He is probably of significantly less value than Puig and Abreu. Not saying he won't get a big contract but I think 6/$72 is not going to happen. At least it shouldn't based on the numbers. And why aren't we hearing the comments of "I don't want him", "He's a gamble", "Cuban baseball is like A or A+ minor league level" etc…any more. Oh yeah, Abreu was a stud. Just as his Cuban league numbers suggested he would be. This guy is not nearly as good as Puig or Abreu. He probably comes in under current speculations. Is there a reason you're completely ignoring defense/positional value? He may not be the hitter those two are, but he's also a potential impact CF/RF. If I told you we could sign a 27 year old version of Jacoby Ellsbury for half of what Ellsbury got, would you say he's overvalued?

Jayson Stark ?@jaysonst 4m
One exec who has seen Rusney Castillo recently says he's seemed worn down by all his workouts. Hasn't flashed same power he showed early.

We don't need Rusney Castillo to be a big time power hitter. We need speed, a potential lead-off hitter, and someone that can consistenly handle the bat.

Have we definitely confirmed that he is a CF to the Red Sox. I have seen a few quotes where I think it was the Yankees who potentially saw him as a 2b. Lets assume that we are not getting Stanton this offseason, and that Victorino is untradeable to due injuries. Lets also, assume we get Castillo. This may belong in a different thread, but what is the best guess as to how the Red Sox would like this to play out. Castillo in center, Cespdedes in rf, and craig in left? Bradley as a 4th of, or in Pawtucket? Betts still an of or back to infield? Can he be on the team if Holt is around? Nava gone?

Yet another reason why the Red Sox are probably pursuing this a bit more aggressively than teams like Detroit. We don't really need anything from Castillo this year other than to get a preview of what we might expect in 2015.

Why do I have this sense of foreboding...that if the Sox get him and pay big bucks out of desperation....he will turn into another Linhares? His stats in Cuba at an advanced age do not overwhelm...contrary to Abreu's or other Cuban imports. How would we value this guy if we did not have a dead (and aging) offense? With the struggles of WMB, Jr., & X as with other rookies up from AAA across baseball, what makes us think that Castillo will make the jump from Cuban leagues seemlessly? The one thing Castillo apparently brings to the table is speed....and if we are not going to hit........

Anyone else feel like we are paying the most money for the worst of the Cuban guys to come over in recent years? You can't fix the mistake they made in not signing Abreu by overpaying for the next guy.

Don't really get this at all. It will be a fun offseason that is for sure.
To me it symbolizes they are giving up on JBJ and not a fan of Mookie in CF. Trade bait for both of those guys however it seems like a massive sell low on JBJ and that just doesn't seem like a great idea.
Prospects packaged up for starting pitching this offseason?
Anyways hopefully he is a standout and blows away the questions much like Puig and Abreu.

This has all the markings of a stupid overpay knee jerk overreaction to having not signed one or more of Cespedes/Puig/Abreu. Winner!

It's interesting to see this kind of money being thrown around to a player with no track record in the major leagues following such an overt display of frugality in regard to Jon Lester. Doesn't really make sense from my perspective.

Have to admit, an initial emotional reaction here also, but let's wait on this and see what he brings. This reaction is based just on hunch annd emotion. Are the Sox this stupid?
