Lot of money. Hope it works out.
Otherwise I don't care. It's just money.

It's only money, not my money, and given the lack of OF talent in upper minors/barren FA OF market it's a reasonable gamble.
What I find funny is everyone on both sides saying "This guy is overrated, never be an impact player, is Rajai Davis, etc." or "This guy will be a star". Unless you were down in Havana scouting the Serie Nacional or part of the MLB private workout you have no idea.
We have to just sit back and see what this guy has to offer. I'm certainly not going to complain about signing a potentially exciting player when the Red Sox have boat loads of space/money to use.

This does mean Mookie and JBJ are gone. Betts will assume a Zorbist like roll, Holt will be 3B, and JBJ becomes your 4th OF. Middlebrooks is the odd man out in this situation.

Oh well let's see how it works out. We know very little about this guy to make any judgement with any degree of certainty.

Alex Speier reports done deal. Only change is it's SEVEN years for 72.5 million. Drops AAV to $10.3 through 2020.

The one thing I don't understand that people complain about is money.
It isn't our money they are spending! They obviously believe in the guy, as do other teams.
If he signed for 6 years/72 million other teams probably had similar bids, the Redsox didn't give him 20 million more than any other team offered him.
The way the market is heading today is teams are paying a premium for major league ready talent.
I do think this means Jackie Bradley's career is over with the Redsox.
I think Mookie Betts still fits into the future, although I don't think he is untouchable. I believe the Redsox still value him a lot. I think he could be your leadoff hitter next year.
I also think the signing could affect either Cespesdes or Allen Craig, either one could be used a trade chip in a deal for a SP such as Mat Latos or Cole Hamels.
This will all make for a VERY interesting offseason. One we all should be very excited about!

Does this mean they used the lateness of the year to get a luxury tax break of 2 million a year or will it just be pro-rated to next year on at 12M per yr? Seems like a good deal if the get him at 10.3M if true.

7 years is much more reasonable. Puts the deal right around where I expected it to be. About $10 million AAV.

First I've seen the 7th year mentioned. Remember when the Red Sox had very few options in the outfield to start the year with questions on the future and then Betts started playing some center. Next here come Cespedes and Craig and now enter Castillo. Now it's what the heck are they going to do with all these outfielders.
Add: One example why drafting for need is mostly a ridiculous idea.

Matsuzaka of the outfield Sorry I'm predicting Shaughnessy lines You, of all people, should be embracing this one. Because I said I'd like to have him? Extremely surprised to see another pretentious post from you. I'm sorry I was wrong about Sam Travis, but you need to hop off of me. I like this move... good AAV. Not that much risk to it at all, with potential to be an easy steal. We have ample time to figure out what the OF will look like.

This move is squarely in line with the deadline deals - adding solid to above average major league talent. Also consistent with the value placed on outfielders capable of handling CF & RF, such as Victorino.

Obv, the Red Sox won't go over the luxury tax threshold this year, so may be constructed as minor league deal this year with mandatory add to 40-man roster after end of season?

Cespedes is only signed for one more year, and Craig could easily be the Napoli replacement at 1B, and isn't a CF/FenwayRFer. And the minor leagues still doesn't have much below JBJ/Betts until you get to Margot, and he's definitely too far away to plan on. *Assuming* Castillo can play, he's the in-his-prime CF/RF they need pretty badly.

I think the reason that it is easy to get a bit bent out of shape about how much the Sox spend on one player is that it can directly impact their ability to sign a free agent later on (which is especially irksome if that potential free agent is someone's binky). The money is clearly not coming out of our pockets, unless you think about where the Sox get all these millions in the first place, but the worst case scenario would be the team playing it cheap later on because they already committed their money here and don't want to pay the luxury tax later.

The counter to the 'all these OF' is that none is very good.
Worst case... Cespedes can't get on base at all, Craig's injuries keep him from returning to form, JBJ doesn't hit again, Nava is almost a lock for being traded, Victorino is a question mark. All the sudden you're counting on a rookie (Betts) and Holt a lot again.
I try to be optimistic, and my dislike for the other Cherington moves shouldn't turn me against Castillo. But... I really hope its Cespedes gone and they keep JBJ at AAA, Nava as a 4thOF/1B as necessary.

First I've seen the 7th year mentioned. "7th" year is just the stub of this year. The main contract is the same 2015-2020. Again, there needs to be more info to see how this year is treated for AAV/luxury tax purposes.

I don't care about FA signings... I just want someone who can hit LHP, but then doesn't start against RHP because Farrell is terrible. The rest between Craig-Nava-JBJ-Betts someone better hit.

To be clear: 40 man spots are available, and they won't need to add him before rosters expand, so it shouldn't force any trades until October, when the FO starts selling low on every OF they can.
