Wow. What got into Matt Barnes today? I like this version of him. All of our pitching prospects in the upper levels should really be motivated. There truly is an opportunity. Pitch well and you'll get a chance in Boston. Pitch well there, and you're in the bigs.

James Ramsey (the prospect traded for Masterson) also.
I count 16 swinging strikes per gameday through 6 innings. Barnes is at 90 pitches, so obviously will not get to finish.

7IP, 10/2 K/BB, 106 pitches, 17 swinging strikes.
Heck of an outing for Barnes.

Chavis pulled after one AB. Injury? Two PA's, probably just getting a sub in like the GCL usually does.

Celestino in, pitch count (106). Price who's pitching for the MFY was part of the Masterson/Hagadone trade.

What an outing for Barnes. Commence the rumblings of him starting instead of Webster next time through the rotation
Note: I'd rather Webster keep the spot, but plenty of media people are already calling for the sox to end their use of Webster

Also, I am glad our media doesn't make decisions for us. Methinks we would have fewer championships in recent years.

. Barnes won't even get the win. Sucks.
I guess he is looking to fill in if Webster keeps shrinking on the big stage.

Have seen many others cite his total numbers in the big total of 30 innings over his MLB career. The media is always quick to throw a guy away and look for the new toy who hasn't played in the bigs yet, even if they're numbers are worse than the guy they want to get rid of at the same level

They are so god damn quick too overreact in this city. It's as if they don't understand the concept of "development"

But the general writers are always ready to pull the plug on guys before they actually have a full opportunity

Barnes outing was great, but he won't sniff Boston this year.

Instead of talking about putting him in the majors let's give him credit. The Red Sox don't have a lot of guys who can go out and dominate a good AAA team. Barnes has certainly had a down year, but let's not forget that he has the most upside of all of those upper minors guys and I include Owens in that. Let's hope that there are more starts like this to come and that this was the day Matt Barnes started to become what we always thought he could be on the day he was drafted.

Webster has no control over his best fastball the two seam I believe, its all over the place.. Any other fastball doesn't have any movement, this is what Eckersley was saying last year, it gets hit and hit hard or the batter forces the walk off the two seam. 10 ML Starts and its a walk per IP and a Run per IP. Time is running out on this kid. Its no longer about development after the latter, its about progression and he does not have it going on. I believe he has one more start and that might be it to put something together or Ranaudo probably takes his spot..

Barnes outing was great, but he won't sniff Boston this year. Probably not, but because he needs to be protected for the Rule 5 draft, they could add him to the 40-man in September.

If they feel he's ready to contribute, they'll bring him (Barnes) up. As amfox said, he needs to be added in the offseason, and the 40 man crunch has been somewhat alleviated with the 7/31 moves

Yeah, I get that he'll be protected and teh 40-man wouldn't be a hurdle. But he's been very pedestrian all year. Even most of his good outings have lacked good K and BB ratios. I don't think they'll drop him into the fire of the big leagues this year. He'd have to pretty damn consistently outstanding the rest of this month to consider that, in my opinion. Hopefully, he has figured something out and his solid the rest of the year and he can build on that going into next year.
