It will be interesting to see if Cecchini continues his recent hitting surge, including a number of doubles. Brenz has hit fairly decently since returning to the lineup. On the other side, Hatfields's assessment of Owens was not encouraging, and Hatfield tends to be reliable.
Just glancing at some of the lower minors games, there seems to be a number of players of interest to watch and see how they progress, more than I originally had believed.

Keivin Heras has yet to give up an earned run in 21 innings. When will he be promoted?

.286 .324 .371 for Cecchini in August... Not much to write home about, but better than <.200 average in June and July
His year really seems like it ends with a report that he will have offseason surgery to fix a broken hamate suffered in early May.

Everyone is going to just love Michael Kopech. He was outstanding with what looked like a 3-pitch mix. Fastball was as high as 96. He was very confident with his slider throwing it easily for strikes. Nice mechanics and very repeatable. He is listed at 6'3" and 195. Not sure about the 195 but he is put together real well with lots of room to fill out. I can see him in Greenville throwing every 5 days next season.
Sat next to Michael Chavis' dad. He was heading back to Georgia in a couple of days. Nice guy. He told me several of the aunts and uncles were real big Sox fans and were ecstatic when Michael was taken by Boston.....but there was one uncle and his wife who were not at all pleased as they are die-hard Yankees fans. His dad and mom were both at MLB's headquarters during the draft and Michael was just so happy about the Red Sox picking him that he was high for quite awhile. He mentioned that Michael is now getting in the flow and raising his game. Dad was wearing a shirt with an Indian in full head dress on it with the words "Chief Chavis". I asked him who bought him the shirt and he said he had one made up for himself and one for Michael. Turns out he is half Cherokee.

Kopech is such an athletic guy and so far from the majors, could consider a switch to OF if he doesnt pitch well next spring anyway.

Does it look like he's already tweaked (i.e. completely reworked) his unorthodox delivery seen on predraft videos?

The only time he (Kopech) had a hiccup was when he tried to throw too hard and then he was high. I can tell you he was also very happy with his start by his reaction after the 3rd. He looks quite athletic and able to grow a lot more into that body. I've seen many of our young pitchers in the GCL over the last 7 years and I really thought he looked great. He seems to be more than a hard thrower.

Considering your assessment, I think Kopech just jumped to the top of his draft class of sox prospects in my book.

The thing on Kopech IIRC was that he tweaked his mechanics and added a bunch of velo his senior year, so I wonder if maybe some vids were from before that, or early on.
I'm sure the occasional wildness (6BB in 9IP, so HUGE sample) can be from that, but I'm liking what I hear. Including that the Sox FO scouted him for two years.

So I couldn't find any good info on it, so I twitter searched to ask someone what Trey Ball's velocity was in his last start. Draft reports had "Fastball sits areound 90-93 mph and tops out around 95 mph." (sic) , and scouting reports early in the year during struggles had him 87-89 mostly I think.
The (unofficial) answer I got was "Nathan Hacker ?@lil_hackmando2 mostly 89-90. Hit 93 a couple times."
So the velo, at least late in the season, isn't quite what we had hoped.

What do we think about the Red Sox trying this strategy... how many days of rain do we need for Boston to climb back into contention? Should I build an ark?

McCutchen, I mean Margot 2-2 with a triple to start the night.

2B: Roberson (14, Marksberry), Travis (5, Marksberry), Sturgeon (8, Marksberry). 3B: Margot (5, Marksberry). HR: Lin, T (1, 1st inning off Marksberry, 1 on, 0 out).
One other note on the Travis power/wooden bat etc thing... he's actually -1.5 age difference for the SAL this year. He may be a college kid, but if he starts next year in Salem, he's probably right where he should be.

Travis was on the young side for a college junior - he doesn't turn 21 until the end of this month.
Nice to see Lin pop one. He's had a tough season, and the rap has been that he just doesn't hit the ball with any authority.

Almanzar has enough AB now to say that he is not a hot streak and he is a decent prospect, not one who belongs at 46. I would like to him in the top 20, but considering the other prospects in the 21-30 group, somewhere in there is good.

Cecchini seems to have gotten his mojo back. He's found the power and the average is starting to climb, the best thing about prospects is how they handle adversity. Maybe he's made some adjustments and in the long run his two month slump will be a learning experience

Diaz gave up runs. Time to go to the outfield.

Margot has raised his OPS to .802. Good for 21st place in the league. 37BB/49K. Dream numbers for a raw toolsy 19 year old.
Raw = With Wendell Rijo batting, Manuel Margot caught stealing home, pitcher Matt Marksberry to first baseman Ross Wilson to shortstop Johan Camargo to first baseman Ross Wilson to catcher Carlos Sanchez, Tzu-Wei Lin to 2nd on the throw.
Portland lost 5-4. For the second time this week, both Scott and Ramirez blew saves. They had been outstanding all year in that area. Johnson with another outstanding start, ERA now 1.87.

So was that 1st/3rd, runner either got picked off, or took off, and during the rundown Margot tried to score but got caught? That's not so bad... I'm surprised an A ball team was aware enough to execute that.

I'm surprised an A ball team was aware enough to execute that. It appears that they had the runner on first in a rundown but I should think that if you are breaking for home, you should be pretty confident that you are going to make it. There will be a ton of game details that he will improve on. His CS% for example as he learns to read pitchers better. Stankiewicz 7.0IP 4H 1R 1ER 1BB 7K 1HRA ERA now 3.86 Oscar Perez with 2 perfect Travis is only 13 months older than Margot.
