Why would they scratch him because of a promotion. He's gonna teleport to Salem in time for the first pitch? So he doesn't get hurt. They need to win games in Salem.

I bet he starts in Portland next year no matter what happens this year. he might defect back to Cuba if he has to play in Portland in April weather.

Yeah I don't think he starts next year in Portland personally if he doesn't play at all in Salem.

moncada had a cast on his left hand last night before the game. I've heard his hand was wrapped. I do not believe it to be true that he had a cast on his hand.

It seems like a small thing, but I think he should be promoted NOW to Salem and let him get comfortable with the environment. I see 2016 as a "launch" year for Moncada. He may start in Salem, but I could see him pull a "Mookie" next season and propel himself into the conversation. I would think rewarding him with 3 weeks in High A is the thing to do. Offensively he has little to prove in Greenville. Lets get him ready for the "count down"! With only three weeks left in the season I see little benefit in his promotion at this point. I agree, though, that once he hits Salem his career could take off ala Mookie. My guess is that he starts the next season in Salem with his IF compatriots, Guerra and Devers.

Chavis said on a recent podcast that things are starting to click for him in the 2-hole. Here's some proof:
To 7/4 - 60G, 44/223, 75TB, 82/17 K/BB, 197/263/336/599, 243 PA (33.7% K-rate)
From 7/6 - 28G, 35/128, 62TB, 39/6 K/BB, 273/306/484/790, 134 PA (29.1% K-rate)

Whenever I read about a player having pitch recognition problems, I think if two possible explanations: (1) inexperience--simply did not see pitchers with three or four pitches in high school, and (2) possible vision problems. I would hope that the Red Sox are very aggressive about checking all aspects of every player's vision. The obvious third option is that some players do not have the cognitive ability and reaction time that allows them to pick up rotation and release point and translate that into the right swing. God knows I never could.

I don't think he meant it that way-- I think he meant more in terms of his fellow Greenville infielders.

The bad news is that players with Chavis' K-rate in low-A tend not to succeed at higher levels. The good news is that he's only 19 (turned 20 yesterday) and he's got some time to develop. Salem is going to be a good test for him, because he's going to see the same pitchers over and over and he'll have to learn to make adjustments from pitch to pitch.

If we are going purely by his listed stats Moncadas body type probably more closely resembles a Quarterback or a holder, maybe a safety.
Although looking at him, I could see an elite wide receiver in him.
Break it down anyway you want I think the point is he looks like a beast, as a physical specimen he looks the part of an elite athlete.

Three stats I am really encouraged about so far -
1. SB% of 92% - likely indicates a natural baserunning instinct. 2. BB% of 10.1% - more patient than the average Cuban. Not sure if it's because he's getting pitched around or that he's actually patient. 3. His splits aren't pronounced. .366 wOBA vs. RHP .414 wOBA vs. LHP. Well I guess that is pronounced, but he's still hitting extremely well from both sides. 4. His strikeouts have dropped considerably as the season has gone on.
One thing that isn't great - 25.9% FB, though his speed should help if he hits a lot of ground balls. Is there a scouting report about how fast he gets to 1st?

He's jacked in a way that very few baseball players you see are. As we said on the podcast, if he's from the U.S., he's probably playing football and not baseball. If you're looking into the statement more than that, you're missing the point.

In the U.S. Moncada would have gotten swooped up by a football coach ten years ago would be playing WR (after having been a three sport star in high school).

The season's over in a couple weeks. It really doesn't matter at this point.

Yoan Moncada since 7/3: .350/.440/.586, 12.4% BB%, 16.6% K%, .236 isoP, 31 SB-3CS
Mike Trout in A-ball: .358/.452/.514, 12.9% BB%, 15.0% K%, .156 isoP, 45 SB-9 CS
Just saying.

Yikes. That puts him on track to make the team next year. Except for the defense...
