If a draft is instituted then the teams that are on probation will just have a pick or multiple picks taken away from them. MLB is not just gonna forget that the Red Sox and Yankees penalties are supposed to run through 2017. Still worth it, so it was a smart move, as you say.
Dear sir,
Sad sack me, hoping to get a 3rd rounder for a guy like Revis to the Jets as a comp pick.....?
Can I ask, sir, yes, I know maybe NFL not baseball, but as much as New England is us, and as arbitrary and silly as home boys like me might seem, shouldn't there be a process that we can sink our teeth into, instead of debating (without knowing as you would admit).... (I don't know either, but chavopepe does).....
Shouldn't we just get something we can argue about, as none of you have really been able to declare with clarity what you declare is smart or not?
Its an undefined penalty for the 2016 United States draft (or is it?) I do not have the answer to that, but Chavopepe does....
Please wait till he replies ok?
Thanks, John

Ah yes, I can imagine the shock of foreign nationals to this great country's absurd tax policies. As opposed to the reality of earnings potential for Cuban nationals?? I get it's not easy to pay millions in taxes, but the guy won the lottery. A little humility on his part would be better , given his fellow countryman's poor economic prospects.

We need spring training to start like now so there is something to talk about. Let me double and triple that sentiment! Thank goodness tomorrow is February. Was it me or was January 10 days longer?

Looking at the possible Salem roster, I would almost consider living there for a couple of months starting in April. I almost wished I still lived in Carolina so I could take in those games in Winston Salem when Salem comes to town.....but just kidding. Salem, VA in April is way too cold for me at this stage of life, and I'm too fawn of SW Florida.
Feb 18 is closer!!

Since I'm in Chapel Hill, I just realized that in April Salem will be either an hour West of me in Winston-Salem or an hour East of me in Zebulon where the Carolina Mudcats play--but that I'm out of town each of those days!

Let me tell you something, if I became as rich as he is I'd be doing the same thing.

To be clear, I think it's unfair to characterize it as "Moncada complained about taxes". When he got his bonus paycheck, it was much smaller than the number that his agent told him and that was widely repeated in the media. In that moment, he was surprised and angry. That seems like a totally reasonable reaction-- if you're not used to employers automatically deducting taxes from your paycheck, are in a new legal/financial environment, and come from a country with rampant corruption, you might well reasonably think that you were just getting ripped off. After his agent explained to him how things work, he calmed down and didn't make a fuss about it.

He also would not be the first rich guy to spend huge amount of money and complain about taxes. Most of them do.

All fair points, I wasn't trying to bash him really, the extent of my knowledge on the situation came from the few posts in this thread. I like the car, wish they had the some pictures of it at night all lit up.

Yahoo SportsHe needs to watch the ESPN 30 for 30 "Broke." They all do, but esp any of the players who grew up poor outside of the U.S., which, as any of us who've been to some of those countries has seen or know, it's a much more dire and impoverished situations than poor in the U.S typically face. In fact, when I was in the D.R., I had a man who was contrasting the situations in the villages there with poverty in the U.S. tell me "No one is poor who has a toilet and a TV."

Based on seeing players' parking lots over the years, I'd bet you that 95% of draft picks who get at least $500k get a new car or truck. And it might be higher.
Consider that he got a $31.5M bonus. So all at once. Even if he only nets half of that, that's still $15M. The above car starts at $140k. Say he got the $500k version including the paint... That's still 1.6% of his bonus. In other words, very little.
Go ahead and get your crazy car, just don't get 20, y'know?

We do need to cut the kid some slack. Remembering that he came from a place that had no taxes would help. The concept was probably alien to him and that definitely would be a shock. It's also one of the reasons why Cuba got opened up. They weren't going to be able to make it simply by relying on friends such as they were any longer, so this is what's coming. With everybody piling in, they'll still needs streets, sewer lines, water systems, trash pickup... guess where all that will come from? My hope is that a place that still has intact mangrove forests as far as the eye can see, won't get run over. One of the scientists I worked with for a long time, went to Cuba maybe 15 years ago. The place hadn't seen any of the aggressive development model that has wiped out much of the Caribbean's natural heritage - up to now. Her impression was that it would all be at risk if care wasn't taken. The Hastings have hopefully taken the time to explain a lot of the money stuff to him. Sounds as if they've been doing just that. I'm glad they're wet-nursing him. It's got to be a kaleidoscope of change for him, and he is just a kid. He's not now who he will become, big wheels aside.

Well, I, for one, commend him for his environmentally-sensitive purchase of a plug-in hybrid automobile. Any young man who thinks, as his inks his $31 million contract after growing up in Cuba, "I'm going to purchase automobiles that will make a dent in our carbon-intensive lifestyle" is ok by me! I'm sure Mr Hastings explained that at least a small portion of his taxes were going toward tax incentives for new wind and solar power generation to help calm him down.
Yoan Moncada is an environmental hero.
The previous narrative is at least as well-supported by the evidence as "he hates taxes and will blow all of his money on frivolous purchases," so I'll just choose the believe my version.
Or, more likely, I'm not gonna care what he does with his money.

Thank the Lord those taxes are being taken out of Massachusetts (red sox) rather than new york (yankees). I imagine he'd be screaming more, I can't imagine new york city having better taxes.

Doesn't his residence in Fla make his $$$ be taxed in Fla? It is good that his agent Hastings is basically his financial advisor as well. Hastings wife is from Cuba as well & she is more like a mother/interpreter. Yoan bought a house 3 houses down from the Hastings. They live in the St Pete area (Gulfport) so it's not like he is in Miami or another area where there is a lot of "questionable" activities that he could get caught up in.

Gulfport is a very nice community a 9 iron from the Trop. The biggest Cuban population in the area is in the Tampa area called Ibor City. Great Cuban food and gorgeous flamingo dancers. My favorite Cuban restaurant is The Columbia. He doesn't need Miami to feel comfortable with his "roots". Did I mention the dancers?
