We've got an honest-to-god discussion of prospects paying taxes - yup, it's February.

February might be the worst month of the year for baseball. There's no action going on except for truck days and workouts. Good thing it's the shortest month of the year. The bad thing is that it's a leap year.

To be clear, I think it's unfair to characterize it as "Moncada complained about taxes". When he got his bonus paycheck, it was much smaller than the number that his agent told him and that was widely repeated in the media. In that moment, he was surprised and angry. That seems like a totally reasonable reaction-- if you're not used to employers automatically deducting taxes from your paycheck, are in a new legal/financial environment, and come from a country with rampant corruption, you might well reasonably think that you were just getting ripped off. After his agent explained to him how things work, he calmed down and didn't make a fuss about it. Now that you mention it, if you looks really closely at the back of his car, you can see the remnants of what used to be a "Rand Paul 2016" sticker.

So not too worried about the strikeouts, as discussed on the podcast. However, a topic I'll probably be bringing up next time on the pod:
vs Left SAL - 19 2 3 0 0 0 2 6 0 7 1 1 .158 .360 .158 .518 vs Right SAL - 81 30 30 7 2 3 16 16 0 21 18 3 .370 .485 .617 1.102
At the game I caught, he mostly had to hit right-handed (his lone LH PA was a four-pitch walk), and it didn't look nearly as great as he does from the left side. I'd leave him in Salem until at least the break, between this and the defensive work he could use.

I'm suggesting that it's not like he NEEDS TO BE IN PORTLAND YESTERDAY the way that, well, the way that Benintendi does. He's just got some things to work on is all.

Not to mention that once he gets to AA, he will sooner than later have to start learning a new position. I think we all expect his bat to be ready if not next year then certainly by 2018, and I don't see Pedroia going anywhere in that time frame. So, long way of saying, they want to be certain he's ready for Portland offensively before promoting him.

For the early teams on the scedule, there doesn't seem to be many lefties. Winston-Salem, for example, only has one, a 25 year old reliever. He's not going to be getting much practice against them there.

Some very high praise for Moncada from Lara-Cinisomo: www.baseballamerica.com/minors/prospect-hot-sheet-chat-may-6/#X5p7cSc5pVHtudkm.97An excerpt: Satchel (Las vegas): Vince, the Hot sheet is thin on AL players, but from an AL perspective, what one player is the next Mike Trout? A 5-tool player? Thanks Vincent Lara-Cinisomo: Moncada. That guy will be a force, barring injury. Steals bases, hits, hits for power, slick defender.

And another tidbit: Jas (Delta): Hi Vince, If you could pick one prospect to build a team around who would it be? Thanks, Jas Vincent Lara-Cinisomo: Yoan Moncada. Nuff said, as one former BA great said.

Yeah...agreed. He looks less fluid...almost tight and bound...robotic. Even from the left side though he is not Dalton Jones.

Does this JBJ emergence of Trout-like production change the org's plan on Moncada? It seemed there was a thought it would be Betts/Benny/Moncada. In a few weeks when Moncada goes to Portland, do they try him @ 3rd/keep him @ 2nd/OF? I know we can't have a 4 man OF, so something has to give (Shaw trade maybe).....

Next year we won't have a DH, and either Hanley's hitting well enough to justify DHing him, or he's the odd man out IMO.

Shaw can't play first base and third base at the same time when Hanley moves to DH. So before Moncada is even ready, we're going to have a hole at one of 1B and 3B, unless Sam Travis fills the 1B spot. Going forward, 3B is waiting for Moncada if he can play it. If not, by the time he's in the majors 2B might be available (which sucks, but Dustin has had a hard time staying healthy). DH might be available - Ramirez is oft-injured or might be needed at 1B. And who says Benintendi doesn't struggle as he faces more advanced pitching? He could be needed in the outfield? These problems always solve themselves.

Given Moncada's normal progression, it's not unreasonable to target 2018 as his arrival in Boston. By that time (August) Pedroia will be 35. While he appears to be in his prime now, his play could diminish in time for YM to start getting time at 2B.

I don't know that the front office had necessarily planned on Moncada being an outfielder. After all, they'd stuck with him at 2B even though he didn't look super natural there as opposed to moving him to the outfield, where he might have moved more quickly. I think the organization still sees him as mostly a second baseman with the possibility of moving to 3B or the outfield as he gets closer to the majors and they take team need into account.
It's also still too early to start worrying about logjams. There is no guarantee that all the players mentioned above will be healthy and productive by the time Moncada is ready for the majors (which likely won't be next spring at the earliest). These things have a way of working themselves out (see, e.g., the Cubs position player logjam), and the worst-case scenario is that you have too many good players, which is not at all a bad thing.
