Very cool. Really like this kind of table, where everything is laid out cleanly. Here is a chart somebody made of possible trade or sign targets. i.imgur.com/cq3Csf7.png

At least they can now say that their manager once smoked a joint with Jimi Hendrix.

Unpopular opinion: Dusty Baker is a good fit for the Nationals. He's a poor strategist, but his biggest job is going to pen HARPER into the lineup and then manage relationships. Considering how good his relationship was with Barry Bonds and Jeff Kent, Baker seems like a solid fit.

Yeah, but when he's the guy they ended up with because they were too cheap to give Bud Black a second year, that doesn't really speak well of the organization.

Agreed. The process, and apparently the Nationals as a whole, are a mess. Matt Williams' incompetence made him a convenient fall guy in DC but their problems clearly run deeper.

I imagine things would have gone differently for the Nats if they had given Dave Dom full president powers. Sounds like they knew they needed that kind of leadership change in making DD2 an offer, but chickened out at doing the necessary house cleaning without him.

When this thread eventually closes, I'm really going to miss seeing Danny Espinosa's mustache everyday.

Semi-notable trade just came down: Mariners get Nate Karns, C.J. Riefenhauser, and Boog Powell from TB, give up Logan Morrison, Brad Miller, and Danny Farquhar.
Trying to think myself through this. As a flyball pitcher who gets strikeouts and doesn't walk too many guys Karns seems like an okay pickup for the Seattle rotation. I wouldn't be surprised to see him put up a shiny ERA. That said, he doesn't seem like a ton to give up for Tampa to see if Morrison and Miller can still turn into something. We've been waiting for Morrison forever, and there's always some aspect of his game that doesn't show up - this year it was his .238 BABIP that help him back. I don't know that he ever puts it together. I'm more bullish on Miller. It's cliche at this point to call someone a Zobrist type, but Miller is a lefty (rather than switch hitter) who works the count and has some pretty good pop ... and is a below average but not soul-crushing defensive middle infielder who can also play a decent outfield.

I think that trade is both teams trading from the depth to fill needs and/or buy low on interesting pieces.

Really sad news to hear that someone so young and talented has died. RIP Tommy Hanson.

RIP Hanson, he was great to watch when he came up and I used to use him a lot in MLB The Show. Sad stuff.

Aaron Hicks had a monster July. 1.001 OPS. He cut his K's by a lot this year too. Not a bad pickup but Murphy is a good backup catcher.

Hicks is a damn good defender as well, great arm picks up assists quite often. If the Yanks do decide to flip Gardner for pitching (which seems likelier with Hicks, because Ackley is already on their bench), Hicks is not a bad replacement at all. If they keep Gardner, he's a great guy to have on your bench to spell any of the three outfield positions.

Yanks could also look to Carrasco, though they might have to offset some of Gardner's salary somehow.

Severino obviously wouldn't be involved and I don't think Gardner and Judge would get it done.

Ken Rosenthal @ken_Rosenthal 11 sec. Sources: Free-agent outfielder Colby Rasmus will accept qualifying offer and return to the Astros for one year, $15.8 million. Story coming.
