Too many fly balls are a problem? I thought that's what they wanted, especially in Fenway. Not from right-handed hitters who hit most of their fly balls to center/right field, as Betts does.

Tough play for Holt there. Guess we should just be thankful it didn't get flicked into the seats on the collision.
But it looks like we're gonna give the runs away anyways.

Here are his BABIP numbers from his time in the Sox system: A- | .298 | A | .322 | A+ | .346 | AA | .366 | AAA | .380 | BOS | .327 | BOS | .255 |
One of those is not quite like the others. Now, it could be that since these are primarily from the minors, the outfield talent he was up against was so bad that lazy fly balls were an absolute mystery to them. You'll understand if I'm not going to buy that just yet. Instead, let me offer up my own analysis. He mentioned at the beginning of the year that he was going to be more aggressive. That has him swinging harder at more pitches, instead of doing what we watched last year as he rifled low liners down the line in right on balls away. Incidentally, he did just that yesterday in one of his at bats, so he may be cuing in to the drift. Pitchers keep books. Only the most obtuse ones haven't figured out that this guy is death to hard stuff inside. His early stated approach countermands that, it plays into he hands of the pitching class. I've also watched many of the games he's played in this year. He's hit shot after shot that had him shaking his head. That he hit them at people is part of what's going on, I believe. I also think the process of adjustment may just take him back to a more selective approach, one that will come with an understanding of what pitchers are trying to do to him since he does kill that inside stuff. He's no dummy, so I think we'll see that BABIP number get right back up to where it's been for just about his entire career. In other words, very much like Xander Bogaerts, it's a process of adjusting to the adjustments. Stay tuned. Noone is saying that his BABIP shouldn't come up, but it might not come up as much as you'd expect. In the majors so far, he's hitting more fly balls and fewer ground balls than he did in the minors (43.6% GB minors, 38.1% majors). Guys are pitching him on the outer half of the zone (something that guys in the minors, with inferior command, were unable to do consistently), and he's proved unable to drive those pitches, at least so far. Maybe that will change, and maybe it won't. But to some degree, he's "earned" his bad BABIP so far.

Thanks for the contribution. You're welcome. Thanks for your pointless response. your post was completely pointless. Nothing but negative things to say. Buchholz has been dominant of late. And holt has been a very good player. That's a hard play for holt to make. They are far from bums.

There seems to be a symmetry to todays game thus far with the season overall. Some momentum..the pitcher who has pitched the best thus far this year on the hill....and he begins the game by sh**ting the bed.
Let's go offense...time to pick the slack....and bail out the pitching. Ham and Eggs...Smoke and Mirrors....and the like.

A 3 runs deficit seems insurmountable with this team especially with against a pitcher with 5 something ERA (It's like we can't hit those guys).

My frustration with Buccholz has always been that he'll be dominant and then lay an egg. Or he'll be dominant and then not pitch for a month. I am convinced this happens because he doesn't care.

Defenses take a lot of hits away from Hanley by playing the second baseman up the middle. Wonder when they will wise up and do it against Holt as well. Just as I was saying, another Holt hit right up the middle.
