Three of the last four picks mocked the mocks (no one had them).

Very happy about Benintendi. Also very happy to see Whitley go to the Not Yankees.

Garrett Whitely was a Red Sox fan. So is Brendan Rodgers. That's what winning 3 World Series does to this generation or youngsters.

Kudos to the Soxprospects staff for already having a news story out AND a player profile page up.

The Red Sox track record of drafting college players early in the draft is quite frankly pretty good. The fact Benintendi was their guy makes me even more excited. Sucks we have to wait until tomorrow to pick, but as always the Sox will target a few high end guys tomorrow and Wednesday as well.

I must have read a dozen stories saying how teams with the top picks would play it safe with college guys. The HS kids are going. The guys in the know don't know so much.

Happy with pick..regarding the size, remember, same size as Yaz or Willie Mays. Interestingly went to a party last night and saw an old buddy with the exact same last name- no they are not related. Started telling him about A.B. and to my surprise he'd been following him for over a year and called his sister yesterday stating- "hey maybe we'll get a hall of famer with our name now!"

Manuel and Callis tied for best mocks, and the two guys most regarded as expert. Neither one as telegenic as Mayo or Reynolds, though. Seriously, that's why they're standing up and not sitting down.

Although I am a little sad the Sox didn't pick Fulmer, because I tend to be of the McDaniel school of thinking, I do like Benintendi. The biggest positive I see in the Sox picking him is not just the quickness with which they announced him, but their increased use of neuroanalytics. I have to think they ran him through testing, and my guess is his task-switching, response times, etc are all far above average, a la Mookie. I have a feeling that they're ahead of the curve in identifying smallish players who play bigger due to ability to barrel up the ball and make consistent hard contact. Some are describing Benintendi as undersized, but it's worth noting that Andrew McCutcheon is 5'10" and 190 or so; Eric Davis had huge power and he was only 5' 11' and 180 lbs. Hank Aaron is another example of an "undersized" hitter in that range, and he was pretty OK.
Now, it remains to be seen if Benintendi hits with wooden bats the way he did with aluminum, but frankly I like his chances. It seems to me that the Sox are identifying and utilizing a second (to small RHPs with good fastballs) market inefficiency...the undersized, athletic player with sneaky power.

I wonder what kind of deal we will strike with Benintendi? does he have more leverage being a sophomore? You'd think that you're not going to ever do much better than 7th. It would be nice to save some money and get a good arm at #81. He does have some leverage and I think he'll go close to slot, if not full slot value. I'd be pretty happy if we could save even 200-300k though. Difference between Boston and the Cubs draft slot is $239,400. Cubs were believed to be the next club interested in him. Wouldn't expect anything much larger than that unless the reason he had helium to this level was his willingness to sign at closer to the 2.5 or 3 mil range.

VERY pleased with Benintendi as our pick. Lots of tools, only 20, potential power, and runs well. The only outfielder I liked somewhat better was Tucker. We certainly could use another good prospect in the outfield. After Margot it is a lot of unknowns. Wouldn't be surprised if he is ready in 2 to 3 years. I mentioned earlier about a Jim Edmonds comp. The only downsize for me is he probably can add another solid 10 lbs of muscle, but no more. He is close to being maxed out. Love the swing and love the glove.

Brian MacPherson @brianmacp Word was that Red Sox saw Carson Fulmer as a reliever, not the next Sonny Gray. Their decision to pass on him only makes that more clear. So he probably wasn't even in the mix. I wonder if Benintendi was off the board if they would have reached for someone like Naylor. I saw Fulmer and Tate as reliever, too. They throw too hard and not balance.

I watched a few clips of him. Ironic that his name is Andrew because his swing reminds me of Andy Van Slyke. Good all-around ball player.

If Houston lands Bregman, Tucker and gets Cameron at 37 it would be a very nice addition for their system. They could go SR signs the rest of the way to pick 10 and still have an outstanding class.
