That Ortiz had two hits against a LHP in a game (week) is encouraging.

The in progress perfect game and then no hitter made Miley commenting off limits at the time but I wanted to give him his credit for a well pitched game coming out of the break. He has taken his share of hate at times but I have to say I think he has been a solid addition. He is a very serviceable #4 or #5 making only 3.67 mil this year, 6.167 mil next year and 8.9 mil in '17. That's pretty good value IMO.
Add: Take away his March/April adjustment period which was fairly disastrous and he has put up a roughly 3.80 ERA over that period. I believe his xFIP is in line with this as well.

i am surprised the Farrell bashers aren't piling on about not pitching around Trout last night. Would anyone have considered intentionally walking him last night? I get that it's stupid to put the winning run on base, but still we are talking about Trout.

This is quality trolling by the umpire.

I was listening to the game last night and when Trout came to bat I said to myself, why not walk him? It was weird. The Sox announcers both seemed to anticipate what was going to happen. I had the same feeling in the top of the ninth when they said that Trout was going to be third batter in the bottom of the inning,
Of course, if they had walked him, Pujols would have come to bat and a double would have scored Trout - and that's probably what would have happened and Farrell would have been roundly chastised.
There was only one truly right thing to do - get Trout out.

I'm more on the "we should have scored at least one run" team.

The numbers probably don't support doing that under any but the most ridiculous scenario (Barry Bonds at the plate, Pokey Reese, Kevin Cash and Jon Lester due up), and putting a fast baserunner on with a guy who hits for a lot of power and a guy who hits for a lot of contact due up is just a ridiculously bad idea.

This is quality trolling by the umpire. Baseball has to fix this. You can't have unhittable pitches getting called for strikes on a regular basis. That is the whole point of having a strike zone in the first place.

The strike zone was brutal last night. I'm starting to come around on trying the computer called strike zone. Or the umpires and baseball have to agree on making it easier to fire bad umps. Not likely.
The thing that bothers me most though ,is there seems to be a group decision to call a bigger zone. That has to be a directive from MLB.
But I agree, something has to be done.
To be fair, the ump was bad for both teams.

Not to beat it to death but I honestly knew after the first inning what the trajectory of the game would look like. That low stuff is just deadly and there were quite a few that were beyond any reasonable definition of the strike zone. The irony is that the pitch is room service for Trout. He is that rarest of right-handed hitters who destroys pitches way down. I was hoping Uehara wouldn't go there, but fully expecting he would and, like many of you, I understood what the probable result would be. We all have to acknowledge that Mike Trout is a legend in the making, a throwback to guys like Mantle and Mays. There was conjecture last year on 538.com that we might already have seen the best season from Trout. Fat chance.

Yeah, Trout is incredible. It would be a tragedy to see him not become a legend at this point.

Let's say Trout suffers a career-ending injury tomorrow (knock on wood), would he be a HOFer? I'd say yes.

Crossing my fingers for a big two-game leap here. If they win tonight it's 6.5, Yanks face Felix tomorrow and Eduardo going for Boston. Back to 5.5 after tomorrow?

There are too many incredible things to say about Mike Trout. I would lose to him on a walk off homer every day of the season and consider it a success. He's going to lead the league in runs for the fourth time in a row and he may have 50 career WAR by the time he's 25.
And it would still be insane to intentionally walk him.
