Unpopular opinion: I've been pretty disappointed by Swihart this year, both offensively and defensively. His plate discipline/plate recognition has looked pretty terrible, he hasn't really shown much game power, and he's not really shown above-average defensive skills (though the tools/athleticism are certainly there). I haven't been disappointed at all. That's because he wasn't even supposed to be up and playing. That was the consensus on the board. Injuries to Vazquez, and then Hanigan, had him put aside additional development at AAA for the majors. The choice between getting some ML development time for a highly thought of prospect or sifting through more guys at the bottom of the major league catching barrel wasn't much of a choice. This is a 22-year old who's shot through the system while learning a new position. That he would struggle is no surprise whatsoever. He's got a track record of improving at each level, but it doesn't include much in the way of a high walk rate, so that isn't a shock. He does seem a lot more comfortable as time goes on, and I believe some of those doubles will become home runs, though I don't see him hitting much more that 20 in his prime. If he does reach the numbers that guidas lays out, that makes him quite valuable. As for the defense, a few things come to mind. He's obviously not a finished product, but we knew that from the scouting reports. Given the athleticism you mention, that will come I believe. I also think he's suffered in comparison to Vazquez, a guy who was vastly underrated for a long time, that is until we all got to appreciate what it means to have a truly great defender, pitch framer, game caller - whatever tag you want to put on the guy - behind the plate. I also think we've come to appreciate his richer offensive skillset. He may not ever get those 20 HRs, but he brings a bit to the table. I don't think he could single-handedly have led the team to the playoffs. That's a bit much, given everything that's gone wrong from the pitching failures/injuries to the disappearance of the middle-of-the-order guys for extended periods. But I do miss the guy. He's a real asset, and I think Swihart will be there with him at some point.

Chris Young has a .500 slugging percentage? WTF? Why can't the Red Sox get freaking lucky like that. This new meme of yours that most player evaluation is purely luck rings false. Yes, there's a significant component of chance involved, especially when you're talking smaller samples. No, it isn't all luck. Although I should mention the 2013 seasons of, among others, Shane Victorino, Stephew Drew, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Mike Carp, and Craig Breslow. Yes. But in suspicious that half the Yankee team is having career years. Especially Tex and arod

The most suspicious thing about A-Rod's season is how the Yankees conspired with MLB to get him a full season of rest at age 38.

Are you saying that ARod couldn't hit a home run there also? Hey, I like the idea of setting up for a possible double play with a slow runner, the pvs Arod at bat was a thing of beauty (god I hate saying that), but I don't think your increasing your jeopardy all the much more with the decision to walk him.

I'm saying that in the 5th inning the difference between a 3-run homer and a grand slam is definitely important (whereas in a tie game in the 9th it might not matter quite as much), and that unintentional walks also happen and are rather worse when the bases are loaded.

Terrible pitch there. Shouldn't have had him go through the order again.

The guy was still pumping easy heat into the 7th inning - 95 to 97. He did make the mistake to Ellsbury. That was all about location. But the slider he just got ARod on was a killer. Consider it on the job training. These guys need to pitch in those situations, I believe.

Disagree - this "situation" (pitching the 4th time through the order in a medium+ leverage game situation) is one that is dying out in baseball, at least with managers that aren't stuck in the 20th century. Since he should never be asked to do it at any point in his career, there is no need to practice it.
