Ladybird looks like another teeny bopper movie. It's just not what I'm into. I really could care less about the trials and tribulations of being a teenager in a middle class environment. If it wins the best pic Oscar, I'll probably watch it, otherwise, I'd have to be really bored. Haha, I even watched Birdman.... ADD: I've seen every Oscar Best Pic winner. Back in the day, Blockbuster used to have all of them. Right now I have 49 of them on my hard drive, I'll get the rest someday. In the category you don't like, I liked Spotlight. Spotlight was ok. I preferred Big Short, as the latter was a bit of a creative approach to "ripped from the headlines." I thought Room, Mad Max, and the Revenant were all better that year, too. Brooklyn was, well, it looked good. And the Martian was fun, but not exactly deep. Skipped Bridge of Spies. Blech. I try to avoid Tom Hanks if possible. Don't get me wrong: I do not think winning "best picture" means a film is even especially good. It is a big evening of marketing. But this year just feels especially tedious and predictable.

I really liked Three Billboards. It probably isn't Oscar worthy, but it was definitely entertaining and the acting was pretty damn good.

I really liked Three Billboards. It probably isn't Oscar worthy, but it was definitely entertaining and the acting was pretty damn good. I also liked it but thought the characters were over acted, nobody is like them in real life, they took a single character trait and magnified it. As an example, the 19 year old bimbo was funny but nobody is that dumb all the time. Doing that seems to be trending the last few years.

I just finished 'The Post' and thought it was well done, particularly for a 'dry' subject. I've now seen 5 of the nominees for best pic. The Post would get my vote. If I had never seen Private Ryan, Dunkirk would have gotten my vote. The Post and Darkest Hour are only ones I haven’t seen, and I almost certainly won’t. I hate Oscar-bait bio films. Tend to be really glossy (and I am no fan of Churchill, so I don’t need more hagiography). Phantom Thread is by far the best movie of the year. It’s great. But it has also been a bad, bad year. I’ve seen few good movies, much less great movies. To the best comedy thread above: Some Like It Hot is my favorite comedy ever, I think. I also love Chaplin and Keaton. All their movies are awesome. Winston Churchill, usually known as the “greatest Briton ever,” is one of the main reasons behind the Bengal Famine of 1943–44. Nearly four million people of the Indian subcontinent died due to a shortage of food. During this time, World War II was going on and India’s natural resources were being exploited by British Raj. Een though famine was spreading in West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, and Bangladesh. The tax was increased to 60% by the British government so that it could compensate the lives lost but not affect the amount of net revenue collected.
Shipping of grains was also denied by Britain. The British government stated that shipping would be dangerous due to the ongoing world war. When Australia offered wheat, it was transported to the British troops in the Mediterranean and the Balkans. US and Canada too offered food during Bengal famine. But they were denied outright.
Winston Churchill once told the Secretary of State for India, Leopold Amery, that, “I hate Indians. They are a beastly people with a beastly religion. The famine was their own fault for breeding like rabbits.”www.unbelievable-facts.com/2017/09/ugly-facts-about-famous-people.html

I watched Darkest Hour, informative and accurate, I'd recommend it. For those that watched Dunkirk and aren't WWII history buffs, this movie does a great job of putting Dunkirk into perspective.
Next up, Thor Ragnarok, I'm mainly interested to see if I can put it on my kids computer for them to watch.
Here's the trailer, looks like your generic super fighter movie:

I watched Lucky last night and thought it was really great. I had to look up the director John Carroll Lynch and thought for sure he was David Lynch's son (David acted in Lucky), but was surprised they're not related.

I watched two more movies.
Thor Ragnarok. Not my genre but decent enough. My wife and kids will enjoy it.
Phantom Thread. If your into boring 'chick flicks' and are looking for 2 hours of mindless dribble, this movie is for you.
Next up, more Westworld then Wonder Woman.

This year's nominees are pretty bad, this one is better movie than most of them.

I've finished with season 1 of Westworld which was surprisingly good. I say surprisingly because the original movie wasn't. My guess, Anthony Hopkins isn't dead, he made a robot of himself. We'll see.
Next up, the two umass recommended Rome and The Last Kingdom.

Nothing I can put a finger on and I might get into it. I've been busy so, I've only gotten through 5 episodes of the first season. Also getting Spartacus now.

If anyone is interested in viewing a series of similar genre trailers for various series, go to www.imdb.com/title/tt2306299/ and click on the Vikings trailer. A large amount of similar genre trailers will follow with no interaction required. That's where I first saw Spartacus. It's a combination of old and new. The History Channel seems to have a lot that are at least worth a peek. Warning, for the BBC series, 'dilly dilly' will cross your mind. I would imagine that if you searched the site, you could find a similar setup for other genres.

Spartacus is epic, especially for action lovers. To some extent, to me, Rome is lacking that. From a sociological standpoint, they've pretty much nailed what Romans would have been like but so far, they are spending too much time on the mundane day to day stuff. Hopefully that will go away soon (I'm through the first six episodes). Cleopatra and Little Boots appearances should at least make the story line more interesting. They're army sizes are also way under. A Roman legion would have been 5000 or so, not the few hundred shown. Looking forward to Spartacus but I'll probably watch Last Kingdom before that, the trailers look interesting.

Rome is more a story about the power game of Rome, seen through the stories of two friends. Not the greatest action series. Spartacus and The Last Kingdom have way more action and I personally like both better than Rome. Not that Rome isn't very good, it is, but it wouldn't be on my top ten TV shows of all-time either. Spartacus and The Last Kingdom are right up there for me with Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Dexter, The Walking Dead, Black Sails, Deadwood, and Homeland as some of the best shows I've ever watched. All depends on what Genres you like, if you don't like Westerns you probably won't like Deadwood, if you don't like Pirate shows you probably won't like Black Sails. If you love the Viking Genre you should really enjoy The Last Kingdom. Just a better made series of the History Channels Vikings in my opinion.
Spartacus most likely has the most action out of all those shows, it just keeps getting more epic as the seasons go along.

I can't take any more of those epic shows that try to be Game of Thrones with 1/100th of the budget.

The entire conquest of Egypt was covered with an announcement. Even Cleopatra didn't add anything. I don't think I could last to Constantine if that's where they are headed. Too much vini, way too much vedi and almost no vici. Pullo is very likable though.

Spartacus question. 3 seasons and a prequel called Gods of the Arena. In what sequence did the prequel air ? In between seasons 1 and 2. The actor that played Spartacus got sick, so they did a prequel why he was recovering. He ended up dieing and was replaced for season 2 and 3.

I decided to put off Last Kingdom until I can brush up on Viking history (they really didn't wear horned helmets, who knew ?). I started in on Spartacus who, I was already aware of and it looks like I'll enjoy the series.
Not sure when I'll get to the Vikings, right now I'm researching Shinto and will likely expand into other Asian areas of interest. Retirement has it's benefits.
