AFAIK he had a rep as being a bright guy before he went to a team with a meddling owner.
I don't see why buying low should only apply to players and not front office people as well.

Gut reaction, subject to change: love it, love it, love it. Obviously a lot depends on what exactly his role is, and how much of it really is "interim".

Given the stress between Dipoto and Scioscia (hardest name ever to spell btw) over analytics, I bet that Farrell is going to start getting a little (a lot) more pressure. I know Cherington is supposedly a stats guy, but it doesn't seem that he pushes Farrell to do anything he doesn't want to do. Maybe they should give the GM job to Dipoto and let Cherington run the farm with a bigger title.

I bet that Farrell is going to start getting a little (a lot) more pressure fired. Fixed for you. It's really hard for me to see Farrell lasting any sort of regime change.

Wonder why a lot of the initial reports said short term and to assist in winter moves? I could see Ben and DiPoto being a good team. Hope he's around.

Well, at least that proves that they're committed to analytics. He's pretty much 100% an analytics guy. And why not? It's been working so well to this point. I can sleep better at night.

This doesn't necessarily mean any enormous shift in the internal power structure. Allard Baird's been around since he was fired by the Royals, and he's very clearly under Cherington in the power structure. I don't see this as DiPoto necessarily taking any of Cherington's authority.

That's where they really seem to be lacking and might be why so many players are underperforming.

I would view this as bringing in an outsider with knowledge of the league to help Ben and ownership self-evaluate the players in the system. If he gets a better opportunity, he leaves and, in the meantime, he provides some analytic value to the Red Sox as an outsider to help test the internal processes.

Rob Bradford @bradfo 55s56 seconds ago In case you were still wondering, Red Sox hire DiPoto as consultant to primarily evaluate their own organization (outside eyes) for now

He quit because he couldn't get along with Scioscia and he wasn't allowed to fire him. Sounds good to me.

This off season with Dipoto will be interesting for two reasons. We can see what an outside perspective can bring to this organization, and how much CB was handcuffed in the past 4 seasons. I hope they can pool all their resources, which include current and post player recruitment( IE Ortiz and Pedro) along side upgraded Baseball Ops and look at team building from every angle. The best part about the end of this season is that they can't ignore their glaring holes like the bullpen! I want all hands on deck if we are going to end up with a top 5 draft pick this year too!

Here's hoping DiPoto's analytical value helps Hanley to hustle more and take better routes and Sandoval to rise up from last in fielding for third basemen.
