I thought that play demonstrated that Rusney is the next Trot Nixon. What am I forgetting that Nixon did? Threw the ball into the stands with less than three outs. I give every outfielder one free pass on that move per career.

I suggested Swihart as a 1B a while ago, but he isn't hitting enough to be a 1B, and such a move might disrupt his development as well as reduce his trade value.
Swihart is one of the most valuable trade chips the Sox have. I think he either has to be the regular catcher or he should be traded. With him as the centerpiece, the Sox could get one of those young ace starters. However, that kind of deal should not be made until it has been pretty well determined that Vazquez will fully recover.

before the game starts, let's get the Breslow facts out. It is medical terminology.
"SLNB: a therapeutic procedure for people with stage IB-IIC melanoma with a Breslow thickness of more than 1 mm."

I wouldn't be opposed to him spending next season in AAA if it looks like he could still use it. Right now, he still does. That might change by spring, but I'll wait and see.

The Sox are 9-8 in August and have a +24 edge in runs, but taking out the 15 and 22 run games, the differential is -2. Still, the Sox are playing better, particularly they are hitting much better. The pitchers still have allowed an average of 5.4 runs per game. The Sox have averaged 6.8 runs per game, but without the 15 and 22 runs, the average is 5.3.

Swihart is hitting .297/.348/.391 in ~70 second half ABs. And unless I'm mistaken, that is above average for a catcher in the major leagues.

Swihart doesn't have to go to AAA to make himself valuable. All the team has to do is shop him and there will be plenty of interest, if that's what they want to do. The ML experience he's gotten this year is gold, and the price will be high. Switch-hitting 23 year-old catchers with lots of athleticism and their rookie season behind them are as rare as an apology from Donald Trump. As Baerga writes, he's been trending above average for a while now.

Are people (Redsox organization) so confident in Vazquez being at least an adequate hitter that we would be willing to trade Swihart this off-season, or is this a next year trade-deadline projection?

I'd probably wait at least a year to see if Swihart takes off offensively. Vazquez probably will end up around where Hanigan is as a hitter IMO. And he is sooo good defensively and as a pitch framer, he won't need to be more than that to be one of the best catchers in the league. Also, I hadn't read this before, but he started throwing last month.

JBJ sits and the mediocre Hanley plays! If they want to play him so bad, why don't they sit Papi 2 games a week and let Ramirez DH and rotate the rest if the OF (excluding De Aza)? #FreeJBJ

Wouldn't mind if a few of these borderline pitches went Owens' way...

These young players are starting to really learn how to hit. Hanley's "offense" is quickly becoming less and less valuable to this team going forward

Now he is trying too much to hit the corners or get batters to chase. I actually like his location so far tonight. He doesn't have a dominant fastball, so he'll need to put it on the black pretty consistently to be successful. But he needs to get the calls when he hits the spots.

Why did we not keep Cespedes?

That lack of concentration from Hanley is just hard to accept as a fan

Why did we not keep Cespedes? Because then we could've used the Hanley money towards a deal w/ Lester or another #1 type, kept Cespedes one more year as a placeholder, before opening up all three OF positions for the next 3-5 years or so made too much sense?

Trade Batts, they say. Lol. ...who says this? He and ERod are just about the only guys who get zero trade talk, haha. EDIT: I'm also dumb and hadn't read the relevant thread. So... Ignore this.

Not that I'm complaining. But did Cueto's agent forget to tell him he might bring his A game tonight?
