Lol this is by far the most misguided argument. "Greinke/Kluber got lit up too!" Umm, Greinke/Kluber/insert real ace/ has recent track records of not being dogsh!t So did Panda. So did Hanley and what did all that win him from those on here last fall? Panda did not have a good track record. He 4 steady years of declining OPS. Hanley hit 10 homeruns before he destroyed his shoulder.

I think maybe Kelly should be moved to the pen. He could be great there. I agree with you, but wanted to know why you think that. What do you thin he brings to the bullpen that could make him great? Yeah I don't buy it. His fastball doesn't miss bats, and he doesn't throw a consistent enough slider. At times yesterday his slider was awesome, but it still didn't help the fastball.

His fastball doesn't miss bats, and he doesn't throw a consistent enough slider. At times yesterday his slider was awesome, but it still didn't help the fastball. It is amazing that the guy can throw 99 and still get lit. It must be the straightest fastball of all time. I don't think it will play much better in the pen in high leverage situations. Last year his velo dropped during his more effective period. I thought at the time that this was an effort to sacrifice speed for accuracy. If so, he went back to the 'grunt it by 'em' modality in his start. Panda made a nice diving stop but is so heavy and ungainly that he could not get up to throw. His gut popping his belt on a swing will live in infamy.

That was a good win yesterday. Farrell's bullpen management was the best part of the day. I know it's been mentioned but not nearly enough after all the hate he gets on this board for supposedly having no idea what he's doing. So kudos goes to him.
Porcello' start was OK. It's the first start of the season and he had a long layoff and he was going against the best offense in baseball. One of the best hitters in baseball took advantage of some bad pitches. 6 innings and 4 runs against that team is something we'd sign off on up front. He needs to get better but it was a positive first outing.

Travis Shaw looks good; he looks like he did last year. Good for him, he's making the scouting reports look bad. Before people get defensive for some reason, it's not a knock on the reports but a credit to him. I just hope the WMB comparisons that were dumb to begin with stop. This kid is a completely different hitter and turning himself into a solid defended at two positions. Love his bat in this line up. Makes it so much deeper. This lineup is reminding me of the early 2000's with Billy Muellers and Todd Walkers etc... Just deep and difficult outs top to bottom

Did you miss what happened in the 2nd half of the year last year with Kelly and Porcello? Oh jeez. Porcello switches to a mix involving his sinker more for his last 8 starts and gets good results. But go back and look at the vertical drop numbers on that sinker during those starts and today. Not anywhere even close to what it once was when he was pitching to his strengths. Until he gets that sinker back, I don't see why we expect good things from him.Joe Kelly goes out the other day and throws the best slider of his career, and still cannot get more than one swing and miss on his fastball. There is legitimate reason to worry about these two. We don't need to sell off Salem just yet to replace them, but we can at least be honest and not pretend like these two look overly promising. It had an inch more drop yesterday than it did in that stretch. (Relative to 4-seamer; on an absolute basis, it had 1.3" more rise.) I really don't think that making stuff up that you hope or guess is true, and stating it in a way that suggests you looked it up, adds to the discussion.

I'm not sure I like Young getting the start against a righty.

I hate knuckleballers, and always have. I don't dislike the pitch per se and actually think more pitchers so try to integrate it into their arsenal, but Wakefield and Dickey are aberrations. Let someone else take a chance with this nonsense. I'd rather have a traditional #5 starter in this spot any day.

I'm not sure I like Young getting the start against a righty. Also agree with this. Feel like he should be in a strict platoon. Much rather give Castillo a chance here if someone needs a break.

I'm guessing the Sox are going to lose a viewer every five days for a while. Bad News Bears baseball.

This could get ugly. Or he'll settle in and go 9 innings without allowing another baserunner.
Young should get zero atbats against righties. Just can't happen.

It really amazes me sometimes at how bad Farrell is at something as basic as platoons and using his lefty specialists against lefties.

Could get ugly ? There was enough ugly in the first inning for a week of A ball baseball.

Well, two runs is manageable. It's not like that Charlie Zink start against the Rangers.
Anyway, high variance pitchers are pretty valuable, so I'm OK with it.

Knuckle ball pitchers aren't very effective when their strike zone is squeezed as much as it is today.

Strike zone has been significantly more generous for Estrada so far.

How the hell did Pedroia not score on that? Has he slowed down that much?

I'm not sure I like Young getting the start against a righty. Also, given his splits, why isn't he batting 9th if he must start here? At least minimize the opportunities for him to face the righty. Farrell? Farrell?...

Chris Young cannot handle Estrada's offspeed stuff.
