Remember after the Carson Smith trade how some here thought that there was not enough high leverage situations to justify having all those premium arms in the Pen? Good times!

No he hasn't. Started 78 and played in 92 over 3 years, with his rating being about the same each year. For me that's more then enough information to show he's below average at 3B. Now if he became a full time 3B sure maybe he could improve, but in his current role I see no reason to expect his 3B D to improve. Ok. Well fangraphs suggests not reading much into UZR until full one to 3 year samples. www.fangraphs.com/library/defense/uzr/OK. But I didn't use UZR from fangraph. I used DRS from Baseball-Reference.

It's pure sophistry to indicate there is anything positive to take out of Joe Kelly's start. 67K, 49B

OK. But I didn't use UZR from fangraph. I used DRS from Baseball-Reference. Right, the idea is the same though. the defensive statistics just aren't advanced enough to use until a 1 to 3 full year sample. It's the same story with DRS www.fangraphs.com/library/defense/drs/.

It wasn't pretty or efficient. But I'll take two runs in five innings from Joe Kelly and be happy with it. This. I hope for more efficient starts going forward, but I'm content with this.

What a beautiful baseball player the O's have in Machado! I really hope he doesn't sign with the MFY when he turns FA. Edit: lol, Jinx!

Nice hit by JBJ. Gotta get it a bit closer to the pole to get a HR though. And that was juuuust a bit too much towards the pole. Pity.

That's not what that says. It says it's not good in small sample sizes cause defense is quite variable, so a couple months or less sample size is really to small. Says when you get to 1 and 3 year samples it's a solid metric. It's doesn't say 1 to 3 full year sample, huge difference. With Holt we have a 3 year sample size.

The contrasting devestation of Uehara and Kimbrel is a joy to watch. So different, yet so similar in their ability to carve guys up.

I enjoyed that performance by Kimbrel. You could see the O's being down their approach against him was very different from Monday and chased everything.

Wow! Great to see us salvage the last game of the series.
At this rate, the bullpen arms will all be dead by August.

Kimbrel with the 50% K-rate and the 6.75 ERA. Let's see how that plays out over the longterm.
