Really nice job by Hembree and Hanigan. Agree completely. Either could get the game ball. Hannigan's at bat was amazing, eventually forcing Giles into the 30s on his pitch count which did him no good. Not a night for high-priced closers, but a good night for a win.

If Pat Light learn to command his fastball like Hembree did last year, this is a dynamite BP. Let's just hope DD doesn't sell any other valuable piece of the farm to get us someone like Gray. Fingers crossed brothers! Now it's time for breakfast and a day of work hehe

Anyone else a little surprised to see Hembree out for a 3rd inning trying to finish it off? Kind of expected Ross to come in. Not really. He did it a few days ago vs. Rays (3 1/3). Ross wasn't even warming up. Farrell had Layne and Light working in the BP.

Heath Hembree just kept Andrew Benintendi in the organization for another two months.

This is a tough one because my brain says you don't overpay for Gray (and it would take a bigger overpay than it did for Kimbrel), but my heart would love it because Gray is a pitcher I very much loved even before the draft. I think I obnoxiously reminded everyone here like 10000 times over the past 5 years or so that the Red Sox were one f$!&¨*ng pick away from drafting him and ended up with Matt Barnes instead. That's how much I like Sonny Gray.

I think he's overrated but I remember the draft and was looking for us to pick him, the same thing happened to us with Stroman...Oh well, I'm a believer in E-Rod and pretty Rick and even Buchholz *Ducks tomatoes*

Updating the Win Probability bullpen totals, for my own (partially grim) amusement; xFIP follows
+0.63 Hembree, 2.17 +0.54 Tazawa, 3.14 +0.27 Uehara, 4.22 +0.14 Ross, 3.29 -0.03 Elias, 5.47 -0.05 Layne, 3.45 -0.17 Cuevas, 8.89 -0.25 Barnes, 4.25 -0.36 Ramirez, 5.12 -0.49 Kimbrel, 3.36

I just checked his BR page to see if already debuted this year and today is his birthday, this is so weird. I hope that's a signal we're trading for him (as a buy low somehow).

What is it with weird hair styles among major league players? Owens looked ridiculous. I have been a fan of him for a while but tonight he did not impress. It has been my experience over many years that great opportunities seldom come more than once or twice and those who succeed take advantage of them when they occur. He certainly did not tonight. However, Hembree did. Very impressive performance.

Heath Hebree has been amazing in the small sample size that is 2016, both at mlb and AAA (he has a NEGATIVE fip for the Paw Sox).

Henry Owens is 23. I'd rather see erratic performances from a 23 year old than consistent blandness. Yeah it hurt that he's needed with the big club now but today's performance does nothing to change his long term outlook.

Worst WPA in this game: - Red Sox Kimbrel: -.412 - Astros Giles: -.412 Never pay premium for relievers.

Kimbrel will be fine. And it's still a bad trade.

No blame John Henry. From Carl Crawford to Pablo Sandoval to Craig Kimbrel, the GM's change but the bad decisions are a constant. The problem is that the Red Sox keep thinking they are better than they are and every year the GM has to make too many big moves in order to meet those expectations and when you have to make that many moves the odds of a number of them blowing up in your face increases. Prospects become baseball players at the same pace as boys become men and sometimes you just have to wait for them to do so. The best teams, the teams that win year in and year out are the ones that understand this. Yeah... It kinda goes back to the awful Lackey trade... They refused to deal him for prospects because they wanted players who could help the team right at that moment, which made zero sense. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out prospects can later be traded for major league players anyway...

We need starters who give up fewer runs and go at least 6 innings. Owens is not and likely will not be one of those guys. Until the starters get right this team will be burning out bullpen arms like tires at a Friday night NASCAR race.

Hembree's velo has dropped at least 2mph Well he came out smoking. I don't remember him hitting 96 while with the Sox. He was brought out for a third inning because we had no faith in anyone else left. Desperation. His velocity did drop so he has just so many bullets in the once injured gun. But please don't blow this guy out. I said in the spring and at least once since, I think Hembree re-tooled his body in the off-season. He looks more svelte. It would be great if he is, indeed, a feel good story for 2016...much needed for the pen.

is there a place for Layne on this team? At his pace, he will pitch 18 innings this year.

Farrell has at least learned that he shouldn't be facing many RHB. Unfortunately, because we've had so many multi-inning relief appearances, it almost feels like he's afraid of using a guy for just 1 or 2 outs in those games, so he doesn't get used at all.
