2016 Boston Celtics Offseason Thread

According to advanced stats like real plus minus and win share Sullinger was better last year. Also Thompson got a max level contract starting at what almost 18 million a year. The problem is they are different players with different roles. Thompson fits Cleveland a lot better than Sullinger does and I'll repeat what I said above. Yes they are different players with different roles. Thompson is a better fit in Cleveland and Sullinger is a better fit on Celtics in my opinion. That doesn't mean Thompson is a better player. It's all about what you need as a team and on Cleveland with all those scorers Thompson is perfect. On Celtics with only one good scorer we need Sullinger scoring and passing a lot more than Cleveland.

Rumor is that Rondo may want to sign with the Nets. His game is so bad now I hope this happens. With Philly and the Lakers getting better next year the Nets are early favorites to be the worst team in the league. Luckily for us the Sixers should give up that title.

I don't think that Nets will be worst team. Sixers and Lakers were bad on purpose to get good picks, Nets have no incentive to be bad. Rondo would be a big upgrade over what they have.

Chances are someone out tanks the Nets, but on paper they really do look like the worst team. NO and PHO figure to be healthier. MIN looks like they're ready to take a big step forward. LAL figures to be improved and possibly add some free agents. PHI has all new leadership for the specific purpose of not tanking. Even the next group looks pretty good: MIL and DEN have a lot of talent. The Knicks are clearly trying to win. SAC could suck, but PHI has the right to swap picks with them so they won't be trying to lose. If CHI trades Butler they will be very bad, but who knows if they will. We'll see what happens in free agency, but I would be surprised if the Nets didn't have a top 3 spot in the lottery next year.

While they don't have incentive to tank, they do have incentive to trade their best players in an attempt to recoup some 1st round picks. That's why we saw the Young trade and why we very well could see BLOPEZ go next.
Of course, that doesn't preclude them from signing free agents (they'll have space, obviously) but it remains to be seen what kind of players they'll get. Money does talk but there will be a lot of teams trying to have a conversation.
Then again, you could see then sign free agents and then move the best ones at the deadline to, again, gain more assets.

And it's always important to remember that tanking comes from the front office, not the players or (usually) coaches. Tanking happens when your good players come up with phantom injuries so you can play your bad players. If you don't have any good players to start, then it doesn't really matter much.
I know a lot of people thought the Nets would pass the Wolves and Suns last year because those teams had incentive to tank and the Nets didn't, but that didn't happen.

Yea, I just don't see that front office out there with the Sixers gone. Sacramento could but they are so dysfunctional I don't think they can pull it off. The Pelicans are desperate to show Davis they can win. I don't know why, it's this attitude that has them making bad moves for the long term while he's so young. Also, the Nets may not be incentivized to be bad for lottery picks their actions seem like they are stripping it down to build back up from the bottom, which bodes well for the Celtics. They probably will sign a couple second rate young free agents that could bust out so we will see.
Obviously, a lot of offseason left but the early signs are good for the Celtics is all.

The more I think of it the more I really think the draft pick trade 31 & 35 was just a bad bad deal. They must really dislike Davis, but they should have taken him there and then drafted Qi number 35. Or if u didn't like Davis taken Zubac at 31...
In sports, the smartest teams stay ahead by exploiting things other teams are not. And while draft and stash has been around a long time, the Celtics were in a unique position, with all these picks to really stock up over there at a time when the crop is deep and getting deeper.

We'll see what happens in free agency, but I would be surprised if the Nets didn't have a top 3 spot in the lottery next year. Sure on paper right now Nets have worst talent level in league, but they have been clearing cap space for years. So I expect them to add a bunch of players this offseason. Players like Rondo to help then win now. They have also done a great job adding young talent in my opinion with very few picks. Hollis-Jefferson, McCullough, Bogdanovic, Whitehead and LeVert. See I think Sixers and Lakers aren't going to be much better than last year unless they add free agents and if I was GM I would let young players play at least one more year before I did that. Sixers still seem lost, why in the world did they not take a pg like Murray, Ulis, or Jackson? Lakers you lose Kobe and add Ingram, don't see that improving team next year. We really won't be able to gauge who the bad teams are till after free agency and even then a couple injuries can ruin a teams season.

Agree 100%. Seems Danny didn't want to add anymore raw players like Young to team, so he passed on players like Davis and Diallo. It's not every year you have an international group of prospects that is this deep. Would have been very happy if they just took two of Zubac, Zagorac, Qi, Zipser, and Cornelie.

I expect the Lakers to add some good free agents - unless they plan on tanking there is no motivation for them to be bad. Also, Kobe wasn't good last year. But we will see.

On paper the Nets are the worst team in the league right now. Sure, they could add some free agents and get better - and in the past having this kind of cap room meant they almost certainly would. But this year could be different. Every team has cap room and it will be hard for them to convince the better free agents to sign there over other cities. They could surprise, but I remain hopeful they will give us plenty of lottery balls to work with.

Yea I really don't see the Nets being capable of drawing any real players in free agency. And we shouldn't forget that Rondo has done nothing to help the last two teams he's played for despite good-looking numbers last year, and while the Nets have added some good young talent, none of those guys look like quality starters in the NBA today. They all have tools and some valuable skills, but they also have some serious question marks. And there is a quite substantial incentive to trade Lopez given his injury history that could leave them paying him something like $20m to sit on the bench in street clothes and lose any possibility of recouping some value for him. That pick swap should give us another top-5 pick next year barring some highly unexpected developments.
Also, for what it's worth, the Celtics appear to be slated to get a meeting with Durant, which is good for us whether he signs or not, because it means he (and hopefully others around the league) has actually taken notice of how well-run this team is. The longer the process drags out, the better the chances we could actually make a serious run are, because we could fit Horford/Whiteside and him under the cap and retain flexibility, both to add role players in free agency and to cut deals given that we're still pretty asset laden at present. I don't think anywhere else can offer him the combo of the easier road to the finals, present talent, top-flight management and flexibility and ability to continue to add talent that we can. I don't like the odds, but I don't think it's quite as unlikely as it once seemed either

I didn't realize that any player you draft could be a Eurostash player. Maybe they can convince Jackson or the Providence kid to go make good money there for a year or two.

Yeah, they stashed "the other" Marcus Thornton in Australia last year.

Interesting Danny said if they kept picks 31 and 35 they would have taken Jackson and Bentil. So I like the trade a little bit more if that's true.

You can also stash in the D. Nader has already agreed to play their next year and not even try to land a deal with Boston this year.

I think BKN is in prime position to sign or absorb players on 1-2 year deals. It wouldn't hurt their rebuild at all.
Example: If the Spurs want to create salary space for a big signing and see Parker as the guy to move, the Nets would be a logical landing spot.
I think the Nets roster could look much different and better than it currently is. Which isn't saying much, it's really bad right now.

This may be true, but there will be a dozen or more teams struggling just to get to the salary floor, so Brooklyn won't be alone.

And has a much less impressive nucleus of young talent than any of the other teams in a similar situation, though I think Philly remains terrible next year, and Sacramento could easily drop into the bottom 3. The lakers, nuggets, suns, wolves and Pelicans should all be significantly better in my view, even without accounting for possible additions over the rest of the offseason. If I had to pick the 3 worst records in the league for next season, I think it's Philly at the bottom, and the two other best bets are Brooklyn and the Kings

The additions of Simmons, Embiid, and Dario Saric will improve Philly significantly from last year. That's not to mention the possibility that they still flip Noel or Okafor for established backcourt help. I think Philly could make the jump to 20-25 wins this year.
Agreed that Sac will likely regress and compete (but hopefully not out-compete) with Bkn for worst record.

FWIW, I don't think teams will be worried about hitting the salary floor this year. There really isn't a penalty for not doing it, they just average out how much you're under and disperse that money between the players on the roster. So there's really no incentive (that I can think of) to sign players just to get up to the floor.
