Why DFA Layne? Why not just demote Brentz? Because then we would have a short bench ( Only Hill, Holt & Hanigan.) We have a very nice bullpen without Layne. Kimbreal and Zeigler at the backend, Ross and Abad as the Lefties, Barnes and Tazawa as 6th/7th inning guys and Buch who can be Long guy, mop up man, spot starter and can give you solid relief outings.

I'll be excited just to see Beni in the dugout. Great reminder of how bright the future will (potentially) be.

“@barstoolwsd: FWIW I was told the #WhiteSox turned down a Benintendi, Kopech, Johnson/Ball, and PTBNL package for Quintana from #RedSox” Is this true?? So glad this didn't happen. Did DD seriously propose this?? Thank you White Sox GM for turning this down.

At first I was all like "why isn't Benitendi in the lineup tonight this is outrageous" then rationale set in. He's traveling across country and its his first MLB experience. Not a bad ideal to get him acclimated to the MLB environment before he plays. Still, it's like waking up x-mass morning and having to wait to open up your presents.

There is no way the WS would have turned down such an offer but no such offer was made. Of that I think we can be certain.

Betts Pedroia Xander Papi Hanley JBJ Hill Leon Brentz Price P Six of the nine began their careers in the Sox organization. When Benny and Shaw are in the lineup it will be seven. But then look at the pitching staff. No starters began with the Sox unless Buchholz is considered. What a vivid illustration of the Sox problem with developing pitching.

If I have to choose, I'll take being an elite orrganization at developping positional players than developping pitchers: Pitchers get injured at a much higher rate.

When Francona got a guy up from the minors he would start him same day. His articulated thought process 1) We didn't call this guy up to sit. 2) The field is the one place where this kid should feel most comfortable. When Farrell gets a call-up, unless it's an emergency or "an established veteran" he's almost always sat the kid. Different philosophies I guess, but sometimes it's better to jump in rather than stick your toe in the water. And every time someone got called up he had to fly to the opposite coast in the middle of a series? This isn't really worth complaining about IMO. It's not like Brentz is an established veteran who is going to take much playing time from him. I'm working on a complete rundown of significant mid-season prospect callups ... here's a summary of sorts. Most guys first get the call because of an injury and/or to fill a bench role. Xander started his MLB career as Brock Holt's replacement as backup MI when Holt was optioned; Mookie began as the 4th guy in a 4-man OF rotation after Grady Sizemore was let go and because Shane Victorino was on the DL. Since 2004, only three guys were called up, like Benintendi, because they were simply felt to be better options that the incumbent. Pedroia in 2006 over Mark Loretta, and Daniel Nava and Ryan Kalish, both to play LF in 2010. Nava moved Bill Hall back to a super-utility role, and Kalish replaced Jeremy Hermida, who was DFA'd after he failed as Nava's replacement after he faded. Pedroia is the only guy to get called up, become a starter immediately, and keep his job long-term. Middlebrooks got the call when Youkilis got hurt and won the job from him, but of course lost it by next May. TJ surgery cost Vazquez his shot at it.
You can view Benny as a combination of Kalish and Nava. Like the former, he's a top CF prospect coming up to play LF, and like the latter, he's coming up because we're playing a MI in LF. Nava of course hit a grand slam on the first pitch he saw in MLB; it will be tough for Benny to top that.

Ellsbury played his first game, as well as the next 2 or 3 games in CF. Then Coco started and Ells played some LF as well, both as a starter and a late inning substitution. So there wasn't an injury per se but he did start his first 3 games on the roster and then started spelling Manny and Coco alternately, giving both a bit of a break here and there before the all star break.

So, where's the lynch mob meeting up if Benintendi strikes out on a called strike three in his first at bat? That poor umpire.

Brentz is lucky that dive did not result in Seager being on third. Gomes-esque play there.

I thought Brentz would be much better. No bat speed and just plain slow as a player. = DFA

I love it when homeruns are hit so hard that the outfielders don't even really bother to chase it.
Also, love the hustle by JBJ to stretch that into two.

“@jmastrodonato: Farrell says Benintendi will likely hit ninth, likes him in front of Mookie Betts” Nice. That way Hanigan and Leon can set the table for him. I'm actually glad that Mookie may get more PAs with men in scoring position though. He does not have the offensive profile of a lead off hitter this year.

At some point though, if Benintendi and Moncada next year become the hitters we think they can become, someone will have to hit behind those guys. With that lineup, the catcher position would be basically the only weakness which is more than any team in the league can say.
