This is an argument for Beltran on a 1-yr deal to DH. It makes some sense. What? Beltran's OBP the last 3 years: .339, .301, .337. As a lineup guy, he has to fill Shaw's role, and maybe he does so a bit better. But that takes your best corner INF glove out of the lineup. And there's no room on the bench for a Sandoval / Shaw platoon partner if you sign a DH and don't dump one of them. If he's replacing Sandoval, then the upgrade of Beltran over Sandoval offensively has to be significant when compared to the defensive downgrade at 1B, and the offensive downgrade of Hanley at 1B versus Hanley at DH (which has been an actual 0.9 WAR in 110 PA at DH, I'll point out for about the 5th time). I actually think the team is better with Sandoval at 1B and Hanley at DH than with Beltran at DH and Hanley at 1B, probably easily so, and the cost of this sideways or even backwards move is paying virtually all of Sandoval's remaining salary and getting literally nothing from it, versus getting a pleasantly surprising return on what's left (surprising to most people, q.v., Hanley Ramirez, 2016-). FG just ran an article showing that the 2016 Sox have had the second best offense in MLB since 1998. Replace Ortiz with Sandoval and it's still the best offense in MLB, especially when you have more PA from Benintendi and Leon. I actually have the exact same lineup as anicentsoxfogey for next year, and the reason why someone as great as Xander Bogaerts is hitting 6th is that he's only the 4th to 6th best hitter on the team, and after you arrange the better guys, 6th is the logical place (since Pedroia needs to hit leadoff and Benny 2nd gives you your R/L balance). I'm fine with not adding anyone to DH or to the starting field. Sandoval and Young platooning the DH spot should give us an above average wRC+ for DH and give us flexibility. I think Sandoval will be fine hitting right handed pitching next year, I'm worried about him being able to contribute on defense. I still think he will play closer to his career average next year, not the shell of a player we saw for 1.01 years. I'm also fine with Shaw being our starting 3B. He's weak against lefties, but he's a 2 WAR 3b with good defense and 5 years of cheap team control left. Leave him there to grow or till Moncada takes his spot. Assuming Holt can back up SS adequately enough, I like Valencia to round out our bench. He can take AB's when there is a tough lefty on the hill from Shaw and Sandoval, he is very good against LHP. I'd spend our extra resources on shoring up our bullpen, the position players are fine.

Going forward... just say nyet to Carlos Beltran and go for home field advantage in the playoffs. The road to the WS will likely go through Texas. Enjoyed seeing Ross flop at home plate while attempting to score on.... a Jon Lester double. When Ross can score from first on an extra base hit from Lester you know it's the Cubs year.

I'm actually hoping for a 2nd place AL finish & play Cleveland in the ALDS. The Indians are talking about using a 2 man rotation (Kluber/Bauer) in the playoffs. Let Texas play Toronto. Best case is Baltimore beats Toronto in the WC game. I agree, that would be the best case scenario by far. The Blue Jays are crazy talented and they actually kind of sort of mirror the Red Sox. I would like to avoid them at all if possible. Plus, after Bautista and Odor are done knocking each other out, the Sox get who's left standing.

I have to ask - what is with John Farrell's aversion to batting JBJ higher up in the order. Why is Shaw so high in the order when he's nowhere near the offensive player that JBJ is?
I mean Shaw and Hill are batting 5th and 6th and Bradley 7th. I don't really get it.

Not scared to face anyone in the playoffs....they should be scared of our guys. Besides in playoff series, anything can happen.
Let's keep it goin', the guys has been creating their good fortune by playing great ball. Let's go Clay!!

JBJ and Benintendi are two of the best hitters in the sport. No shame in moving them up.

And no reason to play Aaron Hill, let along bat him 6th. This guy's been useless with the Sox.

On the jumbotron between innings here at Camden Yards: "Orioles Serve the Community: Vince Worley signed autographs and met fans recently at T-mobile in Essex."
Inspiring.

JBJ and Benintendi are two of the best hitters in the sport. No shame in moving them up. Benintendi hasn't been up long enough to call him anything yet. AND he's still in the process of coming back from injury. It's fine to let him at the bottom of the order for the rest of however long this season lasts. I can understand keeping JBJ further down in the lineup as well. He's dangerous, but erratic offensively.

Oh great. We make stupid plays like this with the biggest head case on our team on the mound.
This is gonna end poorly.

Someone needs to publish the stat of the net of missed strikes and gift balls and vice versa for all teams. I bet the Red Sox are near the bottom. That last 4 pitch walk had two strikes actually in the k zone. Ubaldo has gotten a few gifts already.
