Can we please knock these guys out of the playoffs? I hate tanking games in the name of "rest" and I don't want this team in the playoffs as they are nearly a mirror image of the Sox.

Decision I'm kinda wary of John Farrell making: which reliever to use against a tough LHB down one in the 7th inning.
Decision I'm totally cool with John Farrell making: which dudes are tired and banged up and need an extra day after they've clinched the division.

Re home field advantage: if the Indians go to Detroit on Monday, the probable matchup is Zack McAllister, which is to say, a bullpen game, versus Michael Fulmer. It's pretty likely that the game is meaningful to the Tigers, but if it isn't, I think they start Fulmer anyway ... because the kid needs 3 IP to qualify for the ERA title.
The Indians are 53-28 at home and 38-39 on the road. They're probably going Bauer, Kluber, Tomlin, Bauer on 3 days rest (he's never done it), Kluber. It's not the fearsome post-season rotation they once had, but it doesn't suck, and you really want the extra game at home. I think Porcello's home record isn't meaningful, but if the team thinks it is, all the better that he pitches twice at home.

It would be nice to see the Sox knock the recently overly proud and sensitive/defensive emotionally, whilst being offensive in character after their little morning "get together" before the other Saturdays game against the Bosox.
This may seem childish but it's always pleasing to see the arrogant not get their way.

Sox did a great job in the Bronx, clinching the division while simultaneously harming the Yankees' draft position. Let's keep the ball rolling!

Yeah, I'm fine with resting guys but not fine with pitching Hembree vs LHB and Scott vs RHB right after that. I mean just because they clinched, doesn't mean they should be trying to lose.

Reset for Friday:
BOS has clinched the AL East and, with it, a top three seed. TEX has tiebreakers over BOS/CLE, BOS has tiebreaker over CLE. TEX's magic number to clinch #1 seed is 1. BOS's magic number to clinch #2 seed is 3.
TOR(@ BOS) and BAL(@ MFY) are tied for the wild card spots, with DET(@ ATL) 1.5 games back and SEA(vs. OAK) 2 games back. (BTW, TOR has tiebreakers over BAL/DET, SEA has tiebreakers over TOR/BAL, BAL has tiebreaker over DET, DET has tiebreaker over SEA)
FRI: CLE@KC (Merritt), TB@TEX (Darvish), TOR@BOS (Porcello) SAT: CLE@KC (Bauer), TB@TEX (Lewis), TOR@BOS (Rodriguez) SUN: CLE@KC (Tomlin), TB@TEX (Perez), TOR@BOS (Price) MON: CLE@DET (TBD, only if affects playoff spot or seeding)
WC game is Tuesday (currently BAL@TOR), and ALDS begins Thursday, with Porcello and Price pitching games 1 and 2 vs. CLE, most likely.

Porcello at 70 pitches through 4 - not as efficient as usual but his stuff looks great. Nasty conditions at the Fens.
Baltimore up big, Cleveland just went ahead, Detroit and Texas both up.
We head for Cape cod tomorrow for a two week vacation...We were there during the magical 2004 game 4 and beyond. Will be so nice to be near our roots!

I'm presuming that Porcello is done after 5 no matter how efficiently he gets through this next inning. Enough to get a victory if he gets through the 5th unscathed and the Sox hang on to eventually win, but no more. Appropriate tune-up for the playoffs.
EDIT: Well, so much for that plan. Now get him out after 5 anyway.

I guess I can see the point about Scott facing righties, because I don't really see him ever in a role other than a LOOGY in the majors. Hembree, though? If he's ever going to be in a higher-leverage role, he's probably going to face some lefties and the reps will do him good. This is absolutely the best time to be trying that out.

Really??!! What is the point of this? I hope this 9th hitter is Porcello's last, one way or the other.

Funny that the Cubs, having clinched awhile ago, are still winning more often than not - and by good margins. Of the leading teams/those vying for positions, it's a bit puzzling to see the Sox playing with such low energy and mediocrity.
I certainly hope that they can flick the switch back on when the post season begins.

Bradley and Sandy can't even make a bit of contact. I think Xander is coming out of it a bit - not so much JBJ and Leon.

But the Yankees should have been considered a fairly weak team, with two very young pitchers they didn't hit well at all - and Sabathia make the Sox look just impotent. I know there are a lot of factors - but I would feel a whole lot better if the team weren't sliding into the end of the season a bit.

There was a series of comments awhile back about the Sox's capabilities with men in scoring position and less than 2 out. I seem to remember they were sort of average. But it sure feels like that average was built on their blowout games, where they were hitting and driving in runs at will, and all season they've struggled in these situations when the games are later and closer. I have no proof, it just feels that way.
