It is interesting how many ex-Red Sox players and prospects have been picked up directly from the Red Sox by the Baltimore Orioles! Andrew Politi Eduard Bazardo Darwinzon HernandezFranchy Cordero Travis Lakins Chandler Shepherd Jonathan Arauz Denyi Reyes These are just in the last few years….and I am sure there are many others. Darwinzon was designated by BAL today, so a chance for a do-over if Chaim had any regrets about cutting him loose...

Gary Peters passed on. Remember him pinch hitting some. Yes, and at least once or twice was announced before the game as the #8 hitter !

I think Eddie Stanky ordered Peters to throw at Yaz in 1967 as Stanky was no fan of Yaz.

Darwinzon was designated by BAL today, so a chance for a do-over if Chaim had any regrets about cutting him loose... Bring him home with a minor league deal. No thanks. He cannot throw strikes, like at all, and when he does, he's very hittable. I'm good to move on from the Darwinzon Hernandez experience.

I'd imagine he was more proud of winning the ERA title in '63 (as a rookie) and '66, not to mention the ROY in '63 and 20 games in '64. Gave up only 1894 hits in 2081 career IP. I'd guess that every Pale Hose fan of a certain age has a soft spot for him in their heart.

Bring him home with a minor league deal. No thanks. He cannot throw strikes, like at all, and when he does, he's very hittable. I'm good to move on from the Darwinzon Hernandez experience. Actually, that's not true.
The last time we saw him in MLB he fanned 3 and walked 6 in three 1-inning outings.
What had he done in Worcester immediately before that, that eared him a quick callup after a previous struggle? 2 G, 2 IP, 5 SO, 0 BB.
And that was the end of a stretch in Worcester where he fanned 14 in 8.1 inning while walking (or hitting 3), and allowing a .457 OPS.
And yes, that was sandwiched around 4 games against the AL East where he walked or hit 4 in 3.2 IP and allowed a 1.125 OPS.
So ... an up-and-down guy who goes Woo, Bos, Woo, Bos, and has these results:
Woo: 33 PA, K% 42.4, BB% 9.1. Bos: 43 PA, K% 14.0, BB% 23.3.
This is one massive head case, that's what it is.
At some point he'll be great. Over / under for how many organizations he's with before this happens? Either 4 or 5, I'd guess.

Actually, Eric, it is true no matter how you slice and dice little sample sizes. In this 85,1 major league innings he allowed 73 walks, or 7.7 walks per 9 innings. Dont know how you take that larger sample size and throw it out to support your contention that the guy throws strikes. I added at all because 7 walks per 9 is utterly ridiculous. Had it been 5 per 9 if Id be saying he can't throw strikes and added the at all comment because of how high his rate is at. In the minors last season in a larger sample size, he walked more than 7 guys per 9, and that's not the first time he's done that in AAA. You can try to slice and dice things to the results you want but he is what his major and minor league record says he is....a guy who can't throw strikes at all. So yes, I stand by my statement about Darwinzon, and frankly based on his long track record of allowing a ridiculous amount of walks, I sincerely doubt that he amounts to anything. Maybe they should give him glasses and he can transform himself the way The Wild Thing Ricky Vaughn did in Major League.

Exactly what is lost by a minor league contract. He's still only 26.
I don't see any valid argument against that.

Could’ve just stayed an equipment manager at Santa Clara and graduated and gotten a job
What a career arc that has turned out to be. Happy for him, thanks for raking in 2013

Played long enough to make enough that he could probably never work another day the rest of his life, let alone take a job that pays a fraction of what he's worth and includes long bus rides every week or two. The game is in his blood.

He certainly understands what the road ahead for players can look like, and how you keep on pushing through. Hearing that from someone who lived it has got to be valuable.
