Unbelievable. What crap. Find a new third baseman.

The team is just treading water right now....too much talent to be this mediocre (yet not enough depth either). Oh well....situational hitting is a big issue. And - third base!

Our infield needs work, lots of work.
On the bright side, our ace pitches tomorrow. He must K everyone and not let the ball hit to the left side.

With regard to the situation at 3rd base, I'm reminded of Casey Stengel's lament about the early 60's Mets. "Can't anyone around here play this game?"

I would of had such a better night if I got my pizza and not turned on the TV. Boston got kicked in the nuts twice tonight.

I'm still looking for evidence of Moreland being a GG first baseman.

Games like this are going to put Farrell's tenure as manager at risk - clearly this team is having a mix of issues - some lackadaisical play, loss of attention, poor situational hitting. If they stay at or around .500 or worse for another few weeks, a wake up call of some sort will be needed.

Tim Britton @timbritton 59m59 minutes ago Farrell on 3B: “It’s been a tough position for us. Make no mistake about it…. Opportunity is there for someone to step up.”

sounds like Farrell has confidence in d'Arnaud. Confident that he is not a third baseman.

The Red Sox are closer to the Rays and Jays than they are the Yankees and the Orioles.

Red Sox are 15-0 when Kimbrel pitches. Just 3-17 when he doesnt pitch.

Someone needs to step up at 3rd so that they don't rush Devers.

Third base being a black whole was an entirely foreseeable outcome. If they were going to bet on Sandoval rebounding, there needed to be a strong (ideally right handed) backup/potential replacement. They never got that guy (and traded away Shaw).
In theory, it's easy to upgrade a well-below-replacement-level spot in your lineup. The problem is that there's not much in the way of internal replacements, and we're another month before trade season really opens, and they need every win they can get.

Agreed, it was a puzzling move how Dave just didn't do anything about that position, especially considering the trade to get Chris Sale. This is a win now team. You don't win now relying on Pablo Sandoval to not be awful. Maybe he thought he was selling high on Shaw, but why even do that when your situation at 3B is that bad? There's reasonable criticism to make on the Espinoza and Margot trades, but those were somewhat defensible even if kind of bad. You could see what Dave was trying to do there and I kind of liked those trades. He overpaid some but yeah whatever. But the Shaw trade? With 3B as it is? That's just sheer incompetence.

For me, the silver lining in all this 3rd base mess is that Dumbrowski won't be trading Rafa Devers for a reliever at trade deadline.

Id still like to see the Red Sox pursue Hwang. The Giants will probably be sellers soon and he's at AAA learning to be a utility guy. His strike zone understanding is a work in progress, but he's batting.288 and is a solid fielder at 3b. Since he's right handed he could platoon with Sandoval/holt and come in as a defensive replacement as those 3 are all below average or worse. The cost should be meager but he would offer short term value and potentially long term value if he figures out the strike zone; along with adding depth with Rutledge. He received the clubhouse spring training award from the Giants, so at least he would bring a positive presence at a meager cost.
