2016 article on Perry (it may have been posted but I do not recall seeing it): JUPITER, Fla.—Heading into the World Wood Bat Association Championship, most of the top prospects are already well-known to the scouting community. But every so often, a player will step forward and establish himself as someone to keep an eye on. On Friday night, righthander Aaron Perry (Hurricane High, West Va.) showed excellent stuff and established himself as a prospect for scouts to follow in the spring. Trying to bring some closure to the process. Thompson is the only one left out of the top 10? We can sign him for 425 max and still be in good shape on the pool money? I would think by the end of the week we will know on Thompson. We under paid enough on some to be able to over pay on Brannan and Scheff. Saturday we will have the new prospect rankings even if Thompson has not signed yet? Wait, international signings are announced on sunday? New rankings wait until after the 2nd?

It's already been mentioned but no, the J2 signings will not be ranked quite yet but some have hinted that Flores would be around #5 on his list, which makes sense to me.

Can't blame the kid. Free college ride at one of the better schools in the south and playing a game he loves to boot.. Still, would have been nice. this leaves just Perry whho hasn't outright not given a yay/nay of the premo pitchers left among the HS kids?

Interesting. The article says he signed for an above slot deal, so it will be interesting to see how the money plays out.

Speaking of Thompson....has there been any update on him signing (since Oregon State has been eliminated in the college World Series)?

Back of a napkin so don't hold me to it....
$5,950,455 Bonus pool + 5% $5,927,300 If Thompson signs for slot ----- $23,155 Leftover $148,155 For Perry?

Shades of Pennington on the Perry signing. I really like their late-round drafting the past few years. Stress fracture should heal up just fine, and he sounds like he's got some real projection left.

I thought of the same comparison when first reading about Perry. Did Pennington come to the Red Sox while rehabbing from TJ or did that happen after he was drafted? Sounds like Perry got his brace off two weeks ago, should finalize things in Boston by Thursday and head to Fort Myers for a throwing program. Also, does anyone have the updated signing spread sheet?

Yup, reminds of Pennington and also Gabe Speier a few years back. I also really like their late-round drafting over the last few years, although I thought last year was a departure from that. My worry was that under Rikard/Dombroskowski, they would simply focus their efforts on rounds 1-10 and sign some filler after that. This is a great return to form in drafting/signing some intriguing HS talent (Perry, Hanna, Gonzalez, Colon, Arnold) and college guys that should contribute in our system (Benge, Rios, Crawford). I have to say, I'm very pleased with this draft.

RE: Pennington - it was known he needed TJ, but he didn't get the procedure until after being drafted. So technically option 2 if that's what you meant, rather than getting hurt after he was drafted.

I was thinking that since this is the first year after round 10 the money is 125k. Maybe the writer of article thought Perry got over slot but he really just got 125k with a scholarship. So in effect he got slot for 14th round. Just throwing that out there.

(That said, it's possible that Perry doesn't know what "slot" means.) There's a line in there that shows the writer has absolutely no idea what he's talking about on that front though, because he says something like MLB doesn't publish slot values after the 10th round, but slot in the 10th round ranged from X to Y.

A couple of questions after listening to the June 21, 2017 Podcast Ep. #123: 2017 Draft Review with Jim Callis of MLB.com. 1. Looking at the scouting reports and stats on Tanner Houck and Jake Thompson I'm wondering why Tanner ranks ahead of Thompson? The stuff looks comparable. Tanner has a bigger frame but Thompson is not undersized. What jumps out at me are the NCAA stats. At a better program Thompson had far superior stats. In fact Tanner's stats are unimpressive. Is it the back injury? 2. Why did Alex Scherff fall so far? Was it just the fact that he changed schools 3-4 times during high school?

Per requests, split out the draft structure discussion into its own thread.

Was talking to someone who knows his HS coach & Tyler Dearden's family, and he said Dearden wants to sign. Trying to get Sox to pay for his College. I'm not in the know, but will a team cover College for a 29th rounder?

If I recall correctly, Pennington was hurt early in the season and drafted post-surgery. Perry's injury has a much better prognosis.
