Just got back from a meeting/bbq and it looks as if Fister delivered. See, it's really hard to tell what will happen game to game. They just have to play them out. "Delivered" is the understatement of the thread!

For those wondering I just made this. I'm no doctor but it doesn't look good. Maybe he has one of those thumbs that can bend in odd angles. streamable.com/n7leu

So... did Fister just basically pitch a no-hitter (w/ a mulligan)?

A complete game. Hats off to Doug Fister. There's never a bad time to throw a complete game, but this one was huge to even this series up.

so many good things about this game - leading with Fister - with Nunez just behind.
A few rough nights with the bat, but that's baseball - nothing but great things about this game - except potentially JBJ's injured digit. Here's hoping it is nothing serious - he is on a bit of a roll.
Night, all - see you tomorrah!

Raise your hand if you saw this coming. All of you with your hands up are dirty, rotten liars. That's the way you fight for your roster spot!

So... did Fister just basically pitch a no-hitter (w/ a mulligan)? Yes. That's exactly what he did. Good call.

Chris Sale pitched really well tonight. Fister certainly has Sale's pace of game. Let's hope Fister has found the old Doug Sister.

Hmm. In slow mo, the fingers bent backwards when he slapped it. Yeah it's hard to tell actually if his thumb bent like a thumb normally bends, or if it bent down more towards his wrist. Anyway, great game. Too bad I missed most of Fister's start. That would have been an odd sentence to hear at the beginning of the season.

I don't see how the Sox win tonight's game unless there's a quick hook from John Farrell with Doug Fister. Say what?

Just exquisite. Even a split here would be truly awesome.

So if they have to DL JBJ...Young to the OF - who comes up to add a bat? Travis? Not too many other options, really.....or did I see or read that Pedey is getting close to coming back?

This is one of those rare times I feel relatively smart on this site. It happens only if I watch the game before reading the whole thread. It's a great feeling!

Some random observations ...
-- If anyone is in doubt of the awesome of the game of baseball, just read pages 15 and 16 of this thread. Because the game is so difficult in terms of fine motor skill, players are legitimately streaky and hence entirely unpredictable. Which -> awesomeness.
(There is no statistically significant correlation between a player's performance in one game and the next. However, many hitting and pitching seasons can be divided after the fact into stretches a) which are unlikely to be random statistically and b) where the bad stretches correspond to subpar mechanics which are usually noticed at the time.
The trick is, there's no knowing when such a bad stretch will end.
I mean, seriously. Mid-game Eduardo Nunez had 2 singles in his last 22 PA. An OPS of .182. And as jmei notes, he didn't look good. I was very much planning to come here and note that he had inevitably turned back into a pumpkin ... how long would this slide last? We've seen guys like JBJ go for weeks and Shaw go for months.
That a guy who's 2/22 could then double and homer -- mid-game! -- and look great in the process ... only in baseball. And the numbers tell us that this happens often enough that 2/22 isn't predictive at all.
-- Devers' current slide is different from his earlier one, where his mechanics were way off and he was hitting nothing but grounders. As Gomes noted in the only non-obvious thing I've heard him say as a color guy, when you foul a pitch straight back, you're just a bit off. And he did hit that rocket to 3B last night. I might keep him away from a guy as tough as Kluber tomorrow, though. Holt is actually 6/18, HBP against him with some hard contact.
You could of course also play Holt in LF -- Kluber had big platoon splits his first two years as an ace, mild last year, essentially none this year. Chris Young has never faced him (and I wish I knew how tough he is on guys who haven't). This will depend on whether scouts or deep stats think an extra lefty bat would help.
-- There was no statistical reason to think Doug Fister was anything but terrible back when he had a 6.04 ERA. I think no one here wanted to give him any further chances. Obviously, the team saw some reason to think otherwise, perhaps some adjustment he was in the process of making. He's had a 3.62 ERA since. Huge props to the scouting end of things here.
-- If JBJ wakes up tomorrow with his thumb killing him, I want him on the DL, Steve Selsky off the 40-man, and Bryce Brentz up to play LF beginning Thursday. And if that assertion means that JBJ will be back in two days and continuing to rake (.400 / .556 / .650 in his last 7 G / 27 PA), I will have done my reverse jinx duty.
-- Hanley had that 7-game stretch earlier in the month where he hit .286 / .394 / .500. He then went 2/16, 2 2B, BB in his next 4 games. Now he's 3/7, HR, BB in this series. What does the future hold?
We have no idea.
