Well, just like everybody expected - the game was a blowout. And just unlike everybody expected - Doug Fister probably pitched the game of the year. I enjoyed this start as much as anybody else's with only Brian Johnson's shutout rivaling it for shock factor. And in that game Johnson got the shutout but he wasn't as impressive as Fister was tonight. Fister needs very pinpoint control to succeed and tonight he had it. After the first batter of the game, Fister got 27 outs without giving up a hit, which often is called a no-hitter, except in this case of course, but wow. So Fister rested the pen, came up clutch, and prevented any chance that this series would be a total disaster. Nunez swung a mean bat tonight and hopefully the thumb injury won't mess up JBJ at the plate going forward. They certainly don't need that. Now I'm flash forwarding to decisive Game 5 of the ALDS at Cleveland with the series tied at 2 games apiece. John Farrell has decided that because Fister has dominated the Indians twice in Cleveland and Chris Sale has struggled historically against the Indians, that Fister will be given the start in Game 5 and Sale will be bypassed. Yes, shades of Denny Galehouse (1948). Not that that worked out well for Boston. Can anybody else see Farrell doing that? Nah.

A surgical performance...and probably the least impressive stuff I've seen result in a 1 hit/1 run complete game!
Fantastic job and maybe RS will get another W, for an impressive split given the Pedroia inj. and JBJ's sore thumb. The team's doing pretty well under circumstances which feel like they are more undermanned then they actually are.

Bottom line.
On the road against a solid team, we're 1-1 with our two least likely to win pitchers behind us. Tomorrow and overmorrow, we have our two most likely to win pitchers on the bump.
I'll take it.
Os at home should see Porcello, ERod, Fister Jays away should get us where we are now Pomeranz, Sale, Porcello then the Yanks 4 away are lined up to be Erod, Fister, Pomeranz and Sale After that we're bottom fishing at home then on the road for a while, a chance to pile it on.

About Nunez cold streak, he had a lot of bad luck during it. I've lost count how many times the camera showed him pissed off after lining out right at someone in the last week alone.

But was Addison Reed available last night? lol, maybe you didn't catch the part where Farrell talked with him before the first game when it was first decided. You can't look at these things in a black vacuum cleaner box.

I was just being a pip toward the folks we were complaining that he should've been available because it was a must win because they were obviously going to lose the next two games.

Raise your hand if you saw this coming. All of you with your hands up are dirty, rotten liars. That's the way you fight for your roster spot! Truth. I was calling Fister a disaster. He must've read our posts.

It's slightly irritating that JimEd is not here to immediately tell us Hanley's exit velocity on that hit. 😀 Sorry man. Was at a concert last night.

After last night's game I was wondering, it must be rare to give up a hit to the first batter and then pitch a no-hitter. Has it ever been done before?
ESPN Stats & Info answers that question in more detail"

At this point in my life, seeing a complete game gives me such a thrill. Every game is so stressful with the bullpen mgt, it is like I forgot how exciting it is to see pitcher finish what he started.

I'm actually surprised it's happened 3 times before, now 4 times. CG 1-hitters don't grow on trees. The 1-hit then being the first hit of the game is even more rare (I wonder how often this has happened when the hit wasn't a HR) Then to have that first batter hit HR. But yeah, baseball is amazing.

Sorry man. Was at a concert last night. Mozart or Lynyrd Skynyrd? Counting Crows and Matchbox 20 It was alright, not really my thing. I don't really like bands built around lead singers without good music behind it. I was following the Red Sox game on my phone most of the time.

RedSox today placed OF Jackie Bradley Jr. on the 10-day DL (sprained left thumb) and recalled INF Deven Marrero from AAA Pawtucket.
While it's nice to have a strong defender behind Nunez and co. in the infield, dealing with Holt/Young in LF is going to be brutal.

Was hoping it would be Travis (if not Brentz)...any news on when Pedey returns - we need a bat more than a glove, I think

Yeah, Brentz would have been nice. Hopefully Holt gets zero action out there, and they go with Young close to full time. Another option is to give Nunez a start here and there in LF, with Marrero at second.
Thing is, even though Brentz is a poor outfielder, Young/Holt/Nunez are all below average as well. Ugh.
