I don’t think he’d be their setup man, but Robby Scott was pitching in some high-leverage situations, and Poyner has less extreme splits. We're talking about a LOOGY though, and hopefully with a manager who is willing to use a pitcher accordingly - so I'm not sure less extreme splits are necessarily an advantage. They're going to want the guy who is death on lefties, regardless of how he handles right-handers, and that's more Scott than Poyner.

Jecorrah Arnold ss was an undrafted free agent in 2017 and was paid $50,000 to sign with the Red Sox and give up his commitment to Lipscomb .He may not be a breakout player this year but I found it intriguing that they paid him $50,000 as an undrafted free agent. His Pro debut was not the best but he is 19 years old. Sox prospects scouting report has him as a projectable frame athletic with good bat speed not much power good footwork and glove for his age below-average arm and still pay them $50,000. Intriguing? They paid Glorius $60,000 as a undrafted free agent, not that uncommon I suppose

Addam603 I apologize and hope that you don't ask to go to the Throwdown Thread over this. but I thought it would be a good idea to put all the names in one place and everybody could make a comment here . Again you have my apology.

Chris Hadfield locked-out the discussion side of the 2018 Red Sox prediction poll so you you can't put a post on that thread. But you can still vote.

So, David Durden retired yesterday. 2017 20th round pick, was projected to start the year with another stint in the GCL.

I voted for; Michael Chavis Pedro Castellanos Cole Brannen Danny Diaz Darwinzon Hernandez Trenton Kemp Esteban Quiroz Jeremy Barfield
I think Trenton Kemp could have a breakout year this year .But my number one is Darwinzon Hernandez. He's moved up into the top 10 in most preseason rankings. Chris Hatfield reported earlier in this thread that development of his slider should move him along quickly.

How long does a drafted player have to commit before retiring in order to keep their signing bonus? Durden signed for $125k.

Talk about taking your ball and going home. How can anyone retire before not knowing who you are as a ball player yet?

The first rule of David Durden's retirement is you don't talk about David Durden's retirement.
Seriously though, had the same thought as James. He hit in the low .200s in the GCL though, so this isn't a Shaq Thompson situation.
Also, I bet he may have to pay some of the bonus back. But I'm not sure.

Rob Bradford tweeted out that Durden made the decision to retire/play football at Mercer right after the GCL season wrapped up and that he will only receive the first installment of his 125k bonus.

Btw, it's not that I agree or disagree, particularly in a subjective thread, it's that you obviously didn't just draw names out of a hat.

For me, a few names (not necessarily in order) and why I think it:
Poyner: New arsenal and the old one was already effective.
Travis: I think the power is there and if the new hitting approach filters down, Travis could be a big beneficiary.
Groome: The timing seems right and I'm sipping the hard worker Cool-Ade.
Marco Hernandez: He's better than Holt, Marrero, Lin, Doubront, et al.

I was wondering what Ian Cundall's breakout player of the year would be? Mike Andrews? James Dunne's ? Matt Picard's? Jim Crowell's? vermontsox1's?jmei's? and so on.

I could well see Poyner being part of Boston's late-inning reliever mix by the end of the season. In terms of other long-shots who might might a few levels and add value to the major league club by year-end, I'll throw out Chad De La Guerra and Darwinzon Hernandez.

If the slider that Speier reports he was dominating with in the last start of 2017 is for real, Darwinzon Hernandez will rise quickly. Needs to cut the walks though.

Just a question, but I never see Jalen Beeks mentioned in any of the major baseball sites or Prospect lists. I realize he's 24 and just completed double A, but he's had a good couple years and he is a lefty, with good strikeout rates and apparently good stuff from what I read
Is it only an age thing? I believe shohei Otani is 23.
I've even seen and I believe it was on fangraphs, Brian Johnson rated ahead of beeks in regards to prospect status. I understand he has AAA and Major League experience but the stuff is obviously gone Southward and anything he throws near the plate gets hit a country mile.
Edited for I R gud at grammar

Top prospects are players who have higher ceilings then that, I imagine.
