Sorry for my ignorance, but what are PFPs?

Sorry for my ignorance, but what are PFPs? Pitchers' Fielding Practice. Drill after drill of what you're supposed to do as a pitcher to field your position/where you go in various circumstances (to cover a base or back up a throw) when another player fields the ball.

Didn't see Lakins pitch at all obviously, but he was participating in PFP's and fielding BP with the rest of the pitchers. I thought he threw a pen, as I saw him come in early off the fields with a coach one morning (which is the usual for pitchers who do PFP's, throw a pen, and then skip BP), but I may be confusing him with someone else. At a minimum Lakins threw a pen March 27 (though I couldn't get an unsupervised shot of him).

Not arguing with you, because I think it seems a tad aggressive too. That said, I tend to think the placements may have to do with how they looked this Spring....both Raudes and Groome seemingly looked pretty solid this spring compared to where they were each at last year. VoR, I'd have agreed with you on March 22. Put another way, based on what I saw a week ago today, I'm very surprised Houck is going to Salem. Comparatively, Groome looked much better, so in that context, yeah, it makes sense to send him to Salem. I'll just say that the one thing I'm most confident in is Groome is likely not on Greenville's opening day roster. Given that, I'd say it's more likely he's in Salem based on how great he looked than that he's starting in extended. Make sense? EDIT: Another way to think of it - we're used to the Sox developing pitchers a certain way over the years. Look at where that's gotten them. Might as well try something new, right? We know this regime is very aggressive (see Espinoza/Raudes, then Mata a year later, being assigned to Greenville at super young ages). The projected Salem rotation fits that. Gun to my head, if anyone of those 5 in Salem is likely to start in XST instead, I'd put the best odds on Thompson. Was clearly working through some new stuff when we saw him on Sunday. I hope they all succeed but as you point out why do the Sox have such a bad history in developing pitchers. Is their something to it? I really don't know.

Speier just said Groome is going to the DL with a flexor strain (same injury that ended his season in '17).... Aargh!

I guess that's why I was surprised he was on the DL, but I guess they don't expect it to linger too long so it will be good to see him pitching again. I was pretty high on Lakins 2 years ago, hopefully he can get back on track to be a decent MLB back end starter or long man in the pen.

WHERE IS CEDROLA? EDIT: I saw something about offseason ankle surgery. Maybe that didn’t go well?

I remember wondering who the little leaguer leading off was. Yeah, the article I read said that the surgery wasn’t supposed to interfere with spring training. That’s just even more weird to me.

Oh, yeah, maybe--I haven't seen him without sunglasses* in a while. (Of course that's true of Cedrola too.) * Or a helmet. FWIW Cedrola was a DH on March 24--that might be the last time I saw him playing.

I believe Cedrola is still in Florida. There are 26 players in uniform in the team photo. The roster minus Glorius (definitely not there) and Baldwin (I don't see him) but including Reynoso (3d catcher phantom DL) is 26 players. I think that is Espinal all the way to the right. www.milb.com/images/669289/generic/180x270/669289.jpg

At a minimum I've been told he's definitely not in Salem, so Florida makes sense.
Also a PSA that I may have missed in other threads: for at least some of us, when the site header is updated, your cache may override it, so you click on what appears to be "2018 Projected Rosters" and see Mata, Houck et al. in Portland. I always need to clear my cache this time of year to get the new "Team Rosters" and "2019 Projected Rosters" links.

Completely unrelated point, but Alberto Franco going to Greenville is interesting. 2017 international signed that pitched last year in the DSL after signing. 23 years old now. Only pitched 12 innings and it was in the DSL so there’s nothing to really go on, but they jumped him right up to Greenville.

Undersized, little projection, max effort delivery.

Observations: No real surprises other than there's no number 5 starter. But considering guys like Marcus Walden and Robby Scott started multiple games over the past few seasons in AAA, maybe they have another 3-4 inning reliever in mind to go along with Robby for now. Also only 24 players listed so my guess is Velazquez comes down by the time they absolutely NEED a 5th starter with any one of the injured/suspended MLB starters coming back soon (Pomeranz, ERod or Wright)

If he takes that, he pushes Velazquez down. If he doesn't, it probably means he needs a AAA rehab start, so that fifth starter is essentially one of the two.
