4/10-4/12 Red Sox vs. Yankees Series Thread

To be fair, the Marlins alone are responsible for a decent chunk of that. True, plus weather factors also which is why I don't think its yet time to declare either way the impact of the off-season. The Blue Jays attendance is way down too, I'm sure the Angels have seen an increase, etc. Great topic to be had here in June, though.

I am always looking for reasons to hate these douches more....and I got another one last night. Every so often I worry that I'm growing up - that while I root for the Yankees to lose, of course, I don't hate them in the way that I would have in my teens and early 20's. That post-Jeter/Swisher era just didn't have a ton to make me really angry, you know? Sure, Brett Gardner was a totally fine subject for my ire, but it wasn't the same. And then a Tyler Austin comes around, throwing his spikes up on a double-play ball, charging the mound after one shot to the ribs, and taking a fist to the temple of the third base coach. What a miserable Karim Garcia-level bum. Screw that guy. It is a fair point...but I think the 9-2 record probably has the most to do with it So what you're saying is that the on-field product, not how long it takes free agents to sign, is what will drive interest? We are on the same page here, my friend. I think the Yankee hatred quotient depends upon how long you've watched the two teams, your surroundings, etc. I hate the Yankees and 2004 hasn't changed that for me one iota. I've been watching the Red Sox since 1980 when I was a kid. My dad is/was a Red Sox fan (he keeps tabs but gets too aggravated watching them if they don't go 162-0). So I became one. Despite the fact that my grandfather and great-grandfather and great uncle were diehard Yankee fans. Despite the fact that I married a Bronx girl (who likes the Yankees, but probably couldn't name one player on the team today) and have a five year old who tells me baseball is boring and likes to drive me crazy with his "Let's go Ankees" chant. My dad had a friend who was and is an obnoxious Yankee fan. Always talking about the glory days of the 1949 - 1964 era he grew up with and the 1978 debacle. And living in CT I've had buddies who are Yankees fans with varying degrees of hubris. Luckily I missed everything prior to 1980 or I'd hate them even more than I do now I suppose. When Chris Bosio threw a no-hitter against the Sox in 1993, good for him, but when Dave Righetti threw a no-hitter against the Sox in 1983 and struck out Wade Boggs to end it, it was devastating. I had the misfortune of going to Yankee Stadium in 1987 and watching the Red Sox blow a 3rd inning 9-0 lead despite Clemens starting for the Sox and the Sox naturally lost 12-11 in extra innings. The Yankees always seemed to get the best of the Red Sox (except for 1990 which was quite enjoyable for me) even though they didn't win much because Steinbrenner sabotaged those teams. A good friend of mine in college was a diehard Yankee fan but he was too young to have remembered them ever winning anything and Joe Torre struck me as a nice guy so while I was envious it didn't kill me to see the Yankees win in 1996 - I even recorded the game and post-game celebration for him. But by 1998 I started to really hate them again as they turned themselves into a dynasty - again. And of course things got nasty with the Sox in 1999 when they beat the Sox and were the lucky recipients of blown umpiring calls. And 2003 was truly devastating. It made 2004 that much more sweet but it didn't take away the hatred. It did gain me a lot of respect for Mariano Rivera, the classy way he handled the mock cheer on Ring Ceremony Day 2005. But the venom hasn't left me regarding the Yankees. When the Sox lose I'm temporarily upset but when they lose to the Yankees it really, really pisses me off, and when the Sox beat the Yankees, I feel the need to read about it in the NY papers and watch the YES version of the game because I revel in Yankee misery. I certainly don't do that with any other team. So yeah, when it comes to the Yankees I'm irrational. Things like the history, Righetti's no-hitter, 1999, 2003, 2006 five game sweep, Teixeira messing up the 2016 clinch party, etc get on my nerves. Hell I think positively of Carl Everett, who was a plague on the Sox, just because he spoiled Mussina's perfect game. Despite my hatred for them, I do feel begrudging respect for them. The fact of the matter is they win 57% of their games historically and they've been consistently around that mark this century, a time they only have the 2000 (if that's this century?) and 2009 titles. You know when a team has a typical season of 92-70, they're really freaking good. Sometimes in here, with Red Sox homerism, that gets lost. And it's not just the money. I've seen teams throw money around and suck. I think Cashman, free of Steinbrenner's cronies, is a good GM, and has them going in their best direction since their last dynasty. So that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I do not always condone acts of violence, but when I do, I prefer it against the Yankees.
Get ready, MLB, because if you mess with our guys, Joe Kelly's missiles will be coming, nice and new and "smart"!

I hate the eye-for-an-eye stuff and intentionally throwing at people, but that's what happens when umps won't be proactive. Austin's slide was clearly dirty, and after the Chase Utley thing a couple years ago, baseball was going to crack down on that. He should've been tossed before it came to the Red Sox feeling they needed to take it into their own hands. Watching the replay, he wasn't in contact with the base and the spikes were way up. That's out of line. Kelly should get probably six games and Austin 10. In reality it will probably be like Kelly getting four and Austin three and we'll keep seeing incidents like this because the league doesn't do a good enough job punishing the bad actors and instigators. Agree with all of the above. I read somewhere the umpires said the play wasn't reviewable which makes no sense to me as they clearly looked at some tape after speaking with Cora. Austin's play was pretty close to the same thing that Machado did to Pedrioia last year, except Austin hit Holt in his lower leg, whereas Machado slammed into Pedrioia's knee. I would also add that Sabathia should get at least 3 games as he was clearly not a peace maker hitting both Moreland and Sale from behind and pushing them to the ground.

To be fair, the Marlins alone are responsible for a decent chunk of that. A huge chunk, just on the accounting end: Loria would buy 1000 seats every game just to boost attendance numbers.

There are a lot of shenanigans going on with attendance these days. A lot of teams end up giving thousands of tickets away just to include those numbers in attendance. I'd bet actual attendance is about 10-20% lower than what is stated. Remember the Red Sox sell-out streak when there would be thousands of empty seats at times?

So it turns out that Aaron Judge, who appeared to have quasi protected Joe Kelly during the brawl last night, actually put on a fairly vicious headlock that I couldn't see from any of the replay angles:

Season would start a little later but owners would potentially have to eat less money from attendance.

Porcello on the mound woth Holt at SS has the potential to produce couple or four extra base hits that should be outs.

Price wouldn't be throwing if there was a serious concern. I think we can breath easy.

^people love to use Pedro as the best example of the Red Sox/Yankees rivalry, but Bill Lee was the real leader of Yankee hatred.
Vazquez needs to channel Fisk and Varitek though.

Strangely during this home span, Rafa Devers didn't drove anything oppo to take advantage of the green monster yet. I hope Gray give him something outside that he can do damage with.

I hope Cora and Boone have a private conversation that goes like this. Cora. I know you have to publicly support your player but you do realize his spikes were up and he cut Holts leg, that was not a smart slide. Boone. Yeah yeah it was a little bit of a bad slide but unintensional. Cora. agreed, how about we tell our players that throwing at each other intensionally should stop so this doesn't escalate. Boone agreed. Cora. And lets try to keep the spikes down huh I am the voice of reason, can't help it.

Ace Tickets has some amazing prices for Red Sox tickets this weekend. I just got three Pavilion tickets for $150 total for Sunday's game that retail for $195 each on the Red Sox site. All bleacher seats were $13 to $17 each. Buyers' market for sure.

Real cheap shot by Austin. That right there should get him suspended for a few! And charging the mound. And spiking Holt. If the league doesn't want this crap, they have to really act like they don't want it and not just expect wrist slaps and non-punishments for illegal slides to stop it. I mean who came up with the lame brain idea that you cannot review an illegal slide unless the player is attempting a double play? Illegal slides are illegal and should be punished, even if there isn't anyone to double up. Or else things will escalate every time the league doesn't end it immediately. The umpires didn't do anything to Machado last year for spiking Pedroia and look what happened. Same thing here. I'm going to blow a gasket when Kelly gets 10 games and Austin gets 2. Austin f'ing started it.

I remember seeing Bill Lee at a baseball banquet. He was complaining about his golf game. He said his issue was "a Billy Martin - a dead Yank". Not that he's still bitter or anything....... I think only Zimmer is higher on his hit list than Billy Martin.

Tyler Austin is an absolute punk and embodies everything I hate about the Yankees. I'm curious to see if the Yankees stupidly retaliate tonight.
It's going to be a very, very fun season. I already admire this group and their cohesion way more than last year. I think they have a chance to be special.

Kinda cool, but I never got to meet him.

Bill Lee should be a Hall of Famer....first ballot!
The Sox should use him in some commercials. They are missing the boat.
