I noticed that Devers pulled both of those homers. I’m beginning to wonder if his start to the season has been just one big adjustment period. He was incredibly oppo-heavy last year despite hitting the ball very hard. He’s never struggled this year for any extended stretch, and yet he’s never been that hot for a stretch, either. I like what he’s shown consistency-wise, and it’s pretty impressive when you realize how young he is. But I’m tempted to say that i think he might be such a fast learner, such a student of hitting, that we may have seen his main slump from pitchers adjusting *last* year. I’m more convinced that after today, he may take the next step forward and be learning to hunt pitches he can pull with authority. At 21, his current .276/.326/.488 line with a 109 wRC+ is very very good. But I think there’s another gear there even this year. I just love his development curve. His future is remarkably bright: www.fangraphs.com/blogs/instagraphs/acunas-hall-of-fame-chances-are-higher-than-you-think/While Devers is on a pace to hit 30 home runs, he is also on a pace to commit 35 errors. While I think the home run pace is sustainable, I am worried that the error pace may also be sustainable. From 1938 thru 1944 the regular Sox 3rd basement was known for power and defensive errors. After a two Homer day he responded to a reporter's question about this particular combination with, "I gets paid to knock in more I let's in!" Nuff Ced

You just don't walk the number 9 hitter with 2 outs! YOU DON'T!

Congrats to the greatest Red Sox team ever. They just blew a 7.5 game lead in 2 weeks.

Last season they didn't have the firepower to get back in a game like this. Nice mash by Mitch. Hopefully they can tie it up and go from there.

E-Rod needs to learn that you have to focus every at-bat. He seems to pitch great starts that are ruined by 1 or 2 bad at bats

Not liking Hanley's approach recently - little to no hard contact - seems like leaving a lot on base.

Tonight we got unhittable, well controlled Hembree. Nice to see. Time to score a run or two!

I think it may be time to alternate Leon with Swihart and give CV a break - not making any loud contact at all, another leaving men all over the bases

Got a nice inning out of Hembree - lots of arms in the pen - why not bring in a fresh one?

Does anyone think Hembree is still good now? I don't know. Do you think Kelly is still the worst pitcher ever after the opening game despite not giving up a run since?

While I think the home run pace is sustainable, I am worried that the error pace may also be sustainable. True, but errors aren’t really the best way to judge fielding. For example: player A at 3b gets 800 total chances and makes zero errors, for a perfect 1.000 FLD%. Player B makes 50 errors at third, out of 1000 total chances, for an “ugly” .950 FLD%. Who’s the better fielder? Old-school CW and GG voting have tainted our already biased view of remembering “mistakes.” A guy like Jeter who gets to very few balls but rarely flubs them wins gold gloves, but in actuality hurts his team out there because he’s not even coming *close* to balls a guy like Andrelton Simmons makes look routine. I obviously agree that Devers makes too many errors...but often they’re “preventable.” For example, the two errors on one play earlier this year. Or the Jays game where he threw it away then missed a backhander (ruled a single though). He still gets flustered and rushes. But that will change with experience. FG has him as a defensive asset; he’s +1 DRS with a UZR/150 of over 8. I don’t put a lot of stock in the errors right now; he’s shown good range, he looks great charging the ball, his arm is excellent, and he’s actually pretty nimble. Obviously he’s not Adrian Beltre, but for context Beltre made 29 errors in 152 games his first full season. Devers is only 21...the errors will drop as he learns which plays to attempt and which to hold. He’s got all the tools to be a plus defender, provided he stays in shape. Offseason work on lateral movement might even help take him to the next level.
