Nice game - nice to be a no-drama, well played game. Hoping Benny finds his swing - he is not impacting the ball at all.
Nice to have Poyner back too.

Porcello has been nothing short of amazing. He's pitching like a guy who could win his 2nd Cy Young Award all while Mookie is hitting and fielding like a guy who could very well win the MVP Award.
It's all premature of course, but that's what they've been up to this point.
And Devers was awesome with his 2 bombs. And JMD was JDM. Hope his thumb heals alright. Kind of hard to do when you're playing every night and still hitting like crazy.

I was waiting for Devers first Homer in tonight game for a long time...Since he started last year, I was waiting to see what he can do to a cookie thrown to him middle-middle and as far as I can remember he's never got that before tonight and then I was a little disappointed because I was expecting something of 470-500 ft range. Oh well, he'll keep them for this summer (my money is on James Shield serving him that cookie)

I noticed that Devers pulled both of those homers. I’m beginning to wonder if his start to the season has been just one big adjustment period. He was incredibly oppo-heavy last year despite hitting the ball very hard. He’s never struggled this year for any extended stretch, and yet he’s never been that hot for a stretch, either. I like what he’s shown consistency-wise, and it’s pretty impressive when you realize how young he is. But I’m tempted to say that i think he might be such a fast learner, such a student of hitting, that we may have seen his main slump from pitchers adjusting *last* year. I’m more convinced that after today, he may take the next step forward and be learning to hunt pitches he can pull with authority. At 21, his current .276/.326/.488 line with a 109 wRC+ is very very good. But I think there’s another gear there even this year. I just love his development curve. His future is remarkably bright: www.fangraphs.com/blogs/instagraphs/acunas-hall-of-fame-chances-are-higher-than-you-think/

While I think the home run pace is sustainable, I am worried that the error pace may also be sustainable.

He'll get more rest once Pedrioa comes back (Nunez subbing in a lot more at third base).

Devers star of the game on solo homer nightRH's have to hit Hamels tomorrow. ...which they should be able to do with even a little bit of patience. This is not the same Hamels of ten years ago. In 39 innings he's given up 39 hits and 16 walks. The team should be able to wait him out for something to drive.

While I think the home run pace is sustainable, I am worried that the error pace may also be sustainable. We could stash him the minors for 3-4 years until his defense catches up to his hitting, but this is what happens with 20-21 year olds who are so good you can't keep them out of the lineup. Meanwhile, he also makes so many tough plays that it more than compensates for his errors. B-Ref and Fangraphs both rate him as slightly above average even with all the errors.

Players learn on both sides of the ball. His footwork seems good and he's surprisingly quick. Many of the errors seem to me to come from lack of focus and over-aggressiveness. As one example, he made a great stop, had plenty of time to throw given the speed of the runner, but rushed it and bounced a weak dribbler to Moreland. I think a lot of that stuff will be taken care of as he matures and gets more familiar with the league. He's still just a kid.

I love what Devers brings to the plate with that I am going to hurt this ball mentality. He will continue to improve and who knows what his ceiling is at the plate but in todays game he could put up big numbers. In the field I am amazed that he is as agile as he is for a guy that supposedly weighs in at 6' 235 and he has a great arm. He just needs to settle down and learn to be more accurate and make better decisions, he reminded me of Manny last week with that throw to 2nd. I think his upside on the defensive side is very good in the long run. I am more concerned with AB at this point.

I wasn't sure where to put this, so i'll just dump it here in the gameday thread in case anyone else is interested. www.fangraphs.com/tht/an-exploration-of-mlb-umpires-strike-zones/Really interesting article on assessing the strike zones of different umpires. I'm curious what percentage of hitters incorporate data like this into their normal game preparation and really study an umpire's tendencies. Also, anytime I come across such comprehensive data like this I try to imagine what a field day Ted Williams would've had with it.

Umpire with a weird and bad strikezone tonight, seems like commonplace nowadays.

Devers with a bad strikeout. Vazquez continues to be a automatic out.

Obviously we should have traded Mookie Betts for Cole Hamels.

Lol, I'll take whatever luck the Sox are getting this inning. Anything to get a couple runs works for me.

With an accurate strike zone, 50% of batters would walk vs. Hamels if they never swung at a single pitch.
