How can JBJ look so astoundingly good when he is going good, and astoundingly bad when he is going bad? I realize that there are streaky hitters, but this is ridiculous.

Eck is the opposite of Timlin/Gomes, that's for sure (envious here - though Joe Castiglione is fine).
Still remember listening to Ned Martin or Ken Coleman on a transistor laying in bed when very young, as it faded in and out!

We all get to witness vintage David Price for one night. It's so easy to watch him cruise like this.

I have a feeling we are going to hate Machado a lot the next few years once he gets his 15 year 10 billion dollar contract with the Yankees.

Bummer to see Price lose the shutout. Excellent outing nonetheless.
Good win!

And allow me to go back further as I listened to Gowdy...Games on the west coast were tough as I layed on the radio to try to catch a sentence here or there but keep the volume low enough so my folks wouldn't hear....or else.

Text book pitching by Price. Sale and Rodriquez should take note.

Excellent posts! Transistor radio with an earphone so my folks wouldn't hear past my bedtime. Great memories.

I sense that Price is going to be on again and off again for his entire Redsox career. It's tough to maintain excellence for a long time period in any endeavor, and particularly hard when you get a $200 mil payday. And it could also be that his injury doesn't get better long term but he can rest it for a while and give us a spurt, rest it for a while again and give us another spurt. What a way to spend over $200 mil....
And put me down as never for a second EVER thinking Showalter was good. He's just another BS hard ass who can motivate his players for a while and then they tank under the pressure or from a silent mutiny.

It cracked me up that when he came out to get Gausman, Xander was still circling the bases. He crossed the line in front of Xander. I don't think I've ever seen that. On the other hand not once, not twice but three times, a runner was almost all the way to second base before Gausman noticed he was stealing. If I didn't know better, which I don't, Gausman looked like a man with a major downer buzz going on.

So true....and we know it's not a lack of hand-eye...He can catch the ball with his glove AND on the move flying and diving..but not with his bat. As you say, he was white hot once upon a time. That gives some hope but obviously at some point .163 won't cut it.
This drastic in and out with the bat suggests being just a tiny bit different in his "mechanics" throws him into the dustbin...so narrowly titrated. If it hasn't been reported, I'd like to know what about the mechanics is off.

Devers might need some time in AAA once Pedey returns. He absolutely looks brutal at the plate.

Devers has taken the smart "attacking" approach wayyyy too far. He's swinging at everything right now.
But AAA is not the answer and it would make this team worse to remove him

Devers has taken the smart "attacking" approach wayyyy too far. He's swinging at everything right now. But AAA is not the answer and it would make this team worse to remove him Devers is also 20 years old.. most players his age are playing A ball or not even drafted yet. These struggles should have been expected and now the coaching staff needs to work with him to make adjustments. He needs to be playing everyday in the majors and we just need to be patient and accept that a few bad streaks will happen as it does to most rookies.

The approach he used last year was effective. He is not only not selective now but swings from the heels on every commit. Last year we thought he was possible heir to Papi...now what we can say is that his body type is similar.

Relief rankings. The rankings are of today but the raw numbers for everyone are a day old.
The first number, xWP-, is expected effectiveness (based on xFIP-, BABIP, and HR/FB) and the second is actual effectiveness (based on Win Probability Added adjusted for leverage). Both are expressed on a scale where xWP- matches ERA- and both are followed by their rank (in parentheses) among the top 210 relievers by usage (batters faced times adjusted leverage).
(The range of WP- is larger than that of xWP-, much larger at this point in the season. I'm thinking about constructing separate scales for each of them.)
43 (9) / 28 (29) Joe Kelly 50 (14) / 27 (27) Craig Kimbrel. Both of these guys are getting average, solid 8th-inning results (by ranking), despite being relatively unclutch.
64 (33) / 55 (53) Matt Barnes. Above-average 7th-inning results. 69 (41) / 48 (43) Carson Smith starting 4/19. Had pulled even with Barnes when he hurt himself. 93 (104) / 149 (186) Smith overall 98 (121) / 54 (51) Hector Velazquez
102 (131) / 64 (66) Bobby Poyner. He's remained average in xWP- and his situational luck ran out his last outing. 107 (148) / 106 (131) Heath Hembree 117 (174) / 184 (206) Brian Johnson
The set-up relief looks solid. The weaknesses have been Kimbrel not being elite and Hembree, who ranks 49th in usage (Kelly ranks 46th), being below average.
