Play Feltman when he is ready.
If Cottam can hit average at the MLB level he'll be worth far more than his signing bonus. Regardless the Sox need catching badly.

Bonuses we know: 1 Triston Casas $2,552,800 (slot) 2 Nick Decker $1,250,000 (-235,000) 4 Kole Cottam $375,000 (+42,800) 6 Devlin Granberg $40,000 (+201,600) 10 Grant Williams $2,500 (+134,600) 11 Nick Northcut $565,000 (-440,000) *Speier says in his article that the rest of the top ten either signed for slot or below. The overslot signing expenses here ($675,000) essentially cancel out the underslot savings noted here and the 5% overage ($663,950). I think its safest to assume Feltman, Ward, and Durran sign at slot, perhaps Ward comes in a touch under. Brian Brown is another source of significant savings (likely ~134k), and Marrero is possible to sign underslot but I don't think he will take the senior rate discount. My guess is that we will have an additional 200k-250k to improve the signing bonuses for the likes of Machamer, Howlett, et al. (I think Shugart will sign for 125k).

Still hoping for Machamer and Ronan to both sign to help fill out the pitchers for this draft. So far its been great!

Does pitching in the Cape Cod League generally indicate that a player is not going to sign?

The Spinners just sent a roster to media that includes Brown, Politi, Ortega, Williams, & Granberg. So those guys can be added to the signed list. I think Politi is the only new guy technically but as a senior was a foregone conclusion.

Does pitching in the Cape Cod League generally indicate that a player is not going to sign? Not really. It's certainly an indication that you haven't signed. And statistically, among all of those who are drafted, I suspect you are less likely to sign if you do in fact play in the CCL the summer after you're drafted. But there's a causality issue there. Those who are most likely to sign usually sign right away. Of those who aren't sure, some will play in the CCL (among other leagues), so you're starting with a pool of draftees who are simply less likely to sign in general, and that's the pool from which the CCL draws for draft-eligible players.

Anyword on undrafted signings? Last year the Sox actually grabbed a couple of good ones.

Anyword on undrafted signings? Last year the Sox actually grabbed a couple of good ones. I know that high school undrafted free agent signing are virtually nonexistent, so I'm trying not to get my hopes up that they find another one, because I'm super intrigued by Jecorrah Arnold.

Mike, I have a spreadsheet I'm using to track this stuff, and I was coming out with a different figure for the allotment given the different slot values. Turns out that's the same figure that MLB has for the Sox: $5,723,300. The 5% overage takes it to slightly above $6 million, so a little more slack.

If you look at the draft page, the individual figures are the same for each slot but the total isn't correct. Yours and MLB match what you get if you manually add the slot values.

The only player I can recall who did this under the new system, was BC's Donovan Casey last year. I am sure others have, but I can't recall any, its pretty rare, and with the signing date moved up almost 2 weeks, I think that might make it a bit more rare. Casey signed bc the Dodgers had "extra" when a player flunked his physical. That being said, I really like Machamer's upside and remain hopeful.

Do undrafted HS kids get $125k 'free' from the cap, or does it all count since not drafted?

Do undrafted HS kids get $125k 'free' from the cap, or does it all count since not drafted? Undrafted players can sign for up to $125K without it counting against the cap, just like picks 11-40. Brendan Nail got $125K after impressing in the Cape League last summer. I don't know if an undrafted FA has ever gotten over the slot limit.

Outstanding call, totally forgot that story. Jerry Crasnick had an outstanding walkthrough of it: www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/17255032/tj-friedl-strange-journey-signing-undrafted-free-agentLong story short: he had no idea he was draft eligible, so when someone called about his bonus demands he said he was going back to school.

Haha, thanks, ya, that was an odd story for sure, certainly unique circumstances that lead to his larger bonus. He was a well known player, so I don't think there is anyone close to him this year.
