2018 Draft Signing Period
|
Post by Ryanod1 on Jul 6, 2018 22:30:06 GMT -5
What I don't understand is why Machemer didn't hold out for a nice round $225,000. He and his agent could see what the Sox had available, and I can't believe that (1) they didn't realize he was the final legitimate signing target; and (2) another $12,000 would have been a deal breaker from the Sox's point of view. I was thinking the same thing. Kind of seemed like an odd number to toss out for signing. Something tells me the Sox sweetened the pot a little offering him compensation in the form of scholarship. I know this can be done for the HS guys ready to go to college, but not so sure on guys in their sophmore/junior years. If this was possible the sox could have offered something like $300,000 as a round number, but only report the amount not included in the scholarship. Im sure im wrong, but this seems like a way to explain such an odd number thrown out on this end.

For those wondering the extent to which other teams spend their bonus pools + 5%:

Not Sox-related, but Carter Stewart, Matt McClain, JT Ginn, and Gunnar Hogland did not sign. Braves, Dbacks, Dodgers, and Pirates will all receive picks next year as a result. Carter Stewart was a medical issue so you can't fault the Braves. The other teams are the Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Pirates. It does look like Gunnar Hogland broke his commitment to the Pirates though.

Wow, that seems like 4 pretty big screw ups, especially for the guys picked who should have been underslot. I haven't looked into it too much, but that could easily ruin an entire draft if you're counting on signing underslot guys with so much money that could be saved. Instead, all the money is gone. Early reports are that the 2019 draft will be considerably stronger than the 2018 group. Perhaps this is not a big "screw up" as you might think.

Machamar has had some arm issues, he did this past spring. He did not pitch for the last few weeks of UK's season. He was also maybe a potential starter for UK next season. A big loss for them. Anyway, maybe he just wanted to go ahead and start his pro career kinda like a running back who leaves early. The arm has only so many pitches in it so capitalize as fast as you can while you can. Anyway, my 2 cents and I live in Kentucky so I got a little bit insight.

The Sox signed 28 of their 40 picks, which is on the higher edge of average for them. They also have a whole bunch of international signees. I wonder where all these players are going to play and whether some will be sorted out without being on a team.

Arizona offered McClain slot and he turned it down. Dodgers offered Ginn $2.4M, about $125k over slot.

Well, in hindsight it be a pretty big screw up by the player, at least from a financial standpoint. I have no problem with someone making the life choice to go to college, but here is an article noting that of the 17 of the last ten first rounders to not sign, only five got more the second time, some times significantly so (see Karsten Whitson). www.thepointofpittsburgh.com/gunnar-hoglunds-1-34-million-dollar-gamble/

I would love to know why JT Ginn and his advisor thought it was a good idea to turn down $2.4 million. Next year is predicted to have a stronger group at the top of the draft. The chance of a drop in performance or an ill-timed injury is certainly significant. Go figure.

Now that the season is over for the MILB we can sit back, and evaluate. I was very happy with our draft strategy this year, but I applaud it even more after we saw these kids play. Guys like Durran, Howlett, Feltman and Granberg just killed it. What I loved/love most is the production we received from some of these guys yet our best talent didn't even play really. I cant wait to see what these guys will do next year, and also see what a healthy Casas or Decker can do. I get that its still early and only one season, but I think we should feel extremely optimistic about this group. The power, contact and speed balance is as good as it gets. Players like Granberg, Howlett and Durran could be major steals. It is so nice that steal for the Sox isn't finding a future utility player, but rather guys that can have a big impact. Things are looking up!

After the year from hell for our system, we're owed an outstanding year next year right? Feel optimistic about the future of the org
