There’s an approach there. Last year he gave away so many at-bats. This year he’s not a lock to strike out on a fastball at his numbers with 2 strikes. He’s becoming a very dangerous player before our very eyes…as exciting and frankly unexpected of a development as we’ve seen in a bit. Though I guess he does have a history of making adjustments in the minors so maybe I should have kept the faith a little longer

Cdj, he was getting interviewed. Last year was mention he blamed himself. The way he dealt with it. He didn’t like it. Takes some real growth to get passed that.

I am genuinely curious to see how this works out when Duvall gets back.
As Ian said on the podcast, if it's a month from now and Casas is still struggling, it might be Yoshida to DH and Turner to first. You can't remove Duran from the lineup the way he's playing.

Yoshida getting 3 days a week at DH would be my ideal scenario. He's had a busy rookie season with travel, WBC, acclimating to the US, and looking at his history, his most games played was 143 in Japan. Get him off his feet as much as you can. Wouldn't be 100% shocked if Duvall re-oiled his first basemans mitt

If Casas struggles I think that’s pretty straightforward. If he has gotten hot by then I think they could still get everyone plenty of playing time. You play Duvall against every lefty and sit one of Casas/Duran/Verdugo/Yoshida for rest and/or matchups, Duvall can move around the outfield. Against righties you occasionally sit one of them for rest, sometimes sit Turner, sometimes sit Duvall. Mix in some injuries (even small nagging ones), cold streaks, an occasional Devers rest day. I think the playing time splits can be figured out if you do have this good problem.

Casas had sub-2 WAR projections even before his poor play this season. Duran and Duvall have clearly passed him, even Duvall vs RHP. In addition, you would really like to get the bad fielding LF with hamstring issues out of the field.
The best roster probably has him as a bench bat, but you want him playing every day somewhere and you can't ignore that his clock gets delayed a year if he's in the minors for like 6 weeks

If Casas gets really hot for a week or two before Duvall gets back I think we’ll feel a lot differently about this. If he’s just lukewarm or still struggling yeah it’s an easy call. Add: Also though Tapia has been good enough so far that I think keeping him as injury insurance might be part of the math the team makes too.

Casas is off, not lost. He’s having a hard time squaring up the hitter’s pitch he works for. That said, he had a nice series that included a couple loud outs.
My question about this lineup juggling projection - that we’re 4-6 weeks out from having to deal with - is less about Casas’ bat and more about the position. Does the team really want to mess around with giving out of position guys regular time there for a third straight year? July really sunk last year’s team, and first base defense was a part of it. There’s a difference between playing Turner there against some lefties, and demoting Casas.
I’m really looking forward to having Duvall back in the mix, but I do not think he’s someone who needs to be playing regularly. I think he’s someone who plays regularly when he’s on a heater. His nine amazing games have thrown reasonable expectations way out of whack.

I know this is a dream scenario , but if Mayer was close enough than bang he takes over ss, Hernandez is back as a bench player. It fits so perfect with this team. A man has to have dreams and wishes.

Seems like one of those problems that will fix itself. Duran looks great but has a history of going through funks. Duvall has an extensive injury history. Casas is struggling now but it seems normal to me. Plus who knows what injuries will crop up over the next month.
Depth is good.

The story here is that JBJ told Duran he should try shagging flies so Duran did and now he's good at defense.
Well. Who knew.

I think Jackie would be a coach or manger one day. He wasn’t the hitter , but he took a lot of pride in his defense .

Amazing that it would take JBJ to tell him to shag fly balls to do it. I would think that shagging flys would be a common sense approach to get better reads off the bat. Well better late than never. His routes have looked better.

I think the shagging balls thing, like with the Pedroia comments above, the advice is a small part of it... It's that he put the work in to change, to make himself better. After last season Duran could have gone home and sulked, but he didn't. He went home and worked hard to address what went wrong..

Fwiw, I think he's talking about what's often called "power shagging." (giggle) There's shagging BP but then there's doing it at game speed, which is what Bradley used to do and is atypical.

So basically they have Pedroia teaching Duran how to hit and JBJ teaching Duran how to play CF? Not a bad idea at all, I'd be more worried if it were the other way around, lol.

I’m so happy for him and us. Like everything in baseball you need to practice at game speed. Makes me question our coaching if JBJ is the only one who told him this. He’s very fresh to CF. Even a few year’s of playing it doesn’t mean you know the correct way to play the position. Our coaches should have been working with him during the season and not hoping another player would teach him.

theathletic.com/4503697/2023/05/10/mlb-red-sox-jarren-duran-yankees-rangers/?source=mlbtwBy Ken Rosenthal May 10, 2023 "The way I first heard it, Dustin Pedroia was in the batting cage with Jarren Duran during spring training, advising him to make a mechanical adjustment in a most unusual way. “Put your hands up like you’re ready to f—— hit me,” Pedroia supposedly said. Pedroia, the retired Red Sox star, did not deny saying those words, responding in a text, “Yeah, basically, hahaha, you know me.” But Duran remembers Pedroia delivering the message differently, albeit in equally off-color fashion. “He basically just told me, get your hands up, be athletic, act like you’re going to hit the f—— s— out of the ball,” Duran said. “For him to say that to me, I was like, ‘Hell, yeah. I’m going to buy in.’”"

Doesn't this team have any coaches? Yes, but none of them are making as much as Pedroia is still getting paid, so may as well get your money's worth
