Everyone's favorite draft pick is returning. According to Field Yates', Jordan Richards will fill the empty spot vacated by Caleb Benenoch (released). While I had thought his release was to make room for Watson, I guess they get a roster exemption (NOTE - this is for the week's practice - if they choose to activate Watson, they'll need to cut a player).
Meanwhile, Pats also released Cam Meredith from the PUP list.

Watson was eligible to start practicing today but was not spotted by media. Also Gostkowski was missing. Reports were that NE brought in some kickers but many thought that was due diligence. Now this may change those thoughts.

Gostkowski to IR per Jim McBride Much worse than a heart attack kicker is the 38th best kicker in the world. It's not like the Pats have had playoff games come down to kicks ever...

A guy is on the street for a reason and it isn't because they are a good kicker. Even with his poor kicking this is bad news and it puts a little bit of pressure on the O. That is a good looking IR list to pick from. I'm going with Wynn and Harry.

Mike Nugent is the new kicker. Also, they've signed K Younghoe Koo to the Practice Squad.
Wouldn't surprise me if Bailey handles kickoffs.

Good thing about free agent Kickers is they are still rather good. Nugent isn't some bum that is going to greatly change this team. He doesn't have as strong of a leg, but Bill has never been a fan of 50 plus yard FGs anyways.
What I don't understand is if this was an injury why didn't he fix it in the off-season? It clearly was an issue last year also. My dad didn't want them kicking the FG that iced the game in the Superbowl because of how shaky he was at that point.

At the very least, Nugent should do better on PATs. Kickoffs might be an issue though.

The punter Allen can take over kicking off.
Good luck to the new guy Nugent, shouldn't make much of a difference at this point in Gostkoskis career.

Cardona suggested Bailey would be kicking off.

It’s kind of crazy that for the last 24 years the Patriots have had 2 kickers. One of them was the best kicker in NFL history and the other is definitely a top 5 most likely top 3 kicker in the history of the NFL.

We also had Shane Graham or whatever his name was for a half season when Gostkowskis got injured years back.
I was going to argue that Vinatieri wasn't close to that good even with all his big makes for the Patriots. Yet he's gotten a lot better playing for the Colts. Went from rather bad from 50 plus for the Patriots to really good for the Colts.
Vinatieri 10 years with Patriots 81.9% FGs made. 8/17 from 50 plus
Nugent 7 year career 81.4% FGs made 13/30 from 50 plus
Gostkowskis 14 year career 87.4% 25/35 from 50 plus
The huge difference is that Gostkowskis was elite from 50 plus, yet as Vinatieri has shown Kickers can get better as they get older.

Going from Gilette Stadium to the domes in Indy for half your games tends to be a kind move for any kicker.

Yeah he's likely the best clutch kicker ever. Yet wasn't a big part of that because he had a so-so leg and the fact he made those big huge kicks was enhanced by that? It was for me. Like Vinatieri making a long 40's to early 50 yard FG was a coin flip. With Gostkowskis we have been spoiled because he made those look easy, like it was nothing.

And he chased Hershel Walker down from behind, tackled him to save a TD.

I love (actually hate) how the media is drumming up stories questioning if Michael Bennett is happy with his role. He’s only playing in about 40% of the snaps so I’m sure he’s not overly happy about it, but writing these kinds of stories when the player is just quietly doing his thing is just pulling on strings to make a story that’s not a story right now. Bennett has played well when he’s played, the defense is ridiculous, Bennett is older and nursing an injury. This is like a dream scenario for the team that they can limit his reps early and still dominate. But... the media will find away to pull the anger out of him.

You are correct, the media on everything is out of control.

I think they're taking it easy on Bennett. He's older and can't play every down like he used to. It's a long season and, with the playoffs in mind, they will need him the most then. So, they're giving him a break.
I wonder if this is Brady's last season here. He is selling his house and his trainer is doing so, as well. That says something about his mindset. He will be a free agent on March 18th. If he doesn't sign a new contract by then, he is gone. Reminds me of Montana going to the Chiefs. I think BB and Kraft will have it out. Kraft will want him to stay here, BB will see the end and be the cold hearted SOB he always is. Unless it's obvious that Brady is done, Kraft will win. Owners always do.
Keep a close eye on the offense today. If they can't get anything going against a bad Washington team, it might not be a SB season. Crossing my fingers that Harry coming back next month gives them a real boost. You can't throw to Endelman every time.

As long as the defense is doing its thing I can’t go with it’s not a championship offense in week 5.... they didn’t get things going right offensively last year until week 16. Edit: i should say they didn’t get the offense that they used to win last year going until week 16.
