I've been questioning Butler for a long time now. Goes to South Beach for money and god knows what else. Not to win a ring. KAT is probably the second best Center in basketball. A big man that can stretch the floor. Brad Stevens would have a field day with him. The trade proposal has the oft injured Hayward, Tatum, pick and role players involved. It's really not a bad deal for 2nd best Center in basketball who's under age 25. Also, call me shocked when a young player gets called out early in his career. Paul Pierce says hi multiple times. Add- Here's the trade in the trade machine- www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=tmo2dh3

Ok, first the trade works because Tatum is still on his rookie deal and not being paid his actual value. If you added up the actual value of these guys it would be lopsided not to mention the 1st rd pick.
I wonder what a poll of GMs would say, who knows. Did you see how good a job Tatum did heads up on Young last night? He is turning into a very very good defender and basketball has two ends to play. Kat only plats 1 end. Agree to disagree.

KAT dominates the boards and is one of the best skilled big men in the NBA. That's exactly what he'd bring here and he'd solve the big man issue the Celtics have had for forever in the next 5-7 years.
Tatum is a nice player with a huge ceiling. KAT is a player who's already reaching his superstar ceiling.
He's a supposed bad defender. I bet Embid wouldn't be going off for 38 points and 13 rebounds like he did against the Celtics in his last game he faced them. The Celtics have no answer right now for a guy like Embid. Kanter wasn't the answer. He's on a one year deal anyways.
The trade is a tough call, but as far as trading for superstar players, it's a really easy trade for the Celtics to make if they had to. The Celtics would be getting the best player in the deal. That's what matters in the NBA.

It’s certainly intriguing but you need to be right on KAT being a winning player. If he’s a superstar it’s a tough sell because his teams haven’t been good and the NBA is a league where a star player can carry a team and he hasn’t. That along with his defense is my big concern. If he can’t defend then you haven’t solved your big man problem when it comes to defending the middle in the East. We can rank however we want but matchups matter.

Also to put it another way, KAT is a star in the first year of a 5 year extension. He’s also young. You don’t trade that guy unless something is seriously wrong with him. I can’t see one good reason to do it... why trade him for Tatum who’s going to go on a max deal shortly? You suck now so it’s not to get worse. Hayward is only in the deal to match salary so there’s really not much of a point other than to cut out a cancer.

I mean, didn't we just have concerns about Anthony Davis being a winning player and not being able to carry a team? Put good talent around him, and boom, the Lakers are awesome instantly. That's kind of the idea here with KAT. To your second point. He wants out of Minnesota, the same way Anthony Davis wanted out of New Orleans.

Dirtywater did you read the espn article I posted?
1. Butler took the bench guys and beat the regulars at Minn. 2. He questioned KATs desire to win and his effort. 3. Minn has not been good with KAT so how is he really a superstar? Or is he one of those guys thats a superstar on a bad team.
You could be right but their is no guarantee he will fit and the C's will win, just like with Kyrie, so the C's mortgage the future for a guy whose effort has been questioned, who is currently about the worse defensive center in the league and whose team doesn't win with him. You can question Butler all you want but his teams win and he wins and he didn't want to play with KAT at all. What is Butlers team doing this year? Agree to disagree.

Those are fair points, but you can also raise questions about Tatum too-
1) Will he ever be consistent enough to reach the next level? 2) Will he be a closer who demands the ball in his hands instead of this passive player? 3) How good is his shot selection is going to become?
Every young player has questions about them. I take everything Butler says with a grain of salt and that was when Butler forced himself out of Minnesota when he himself was being a cancer to the team. KAT is putting up huge numbers that can't be ignored. The defense is a question, but the skillset isn't.
I trust the evaluation of Danny Ainge either way. If he trades Tatum for KAT, you'll know the answer on his evaluation when comparing both players. Anthony Davis wasn't winning before this year either. These players need players around them.

Dirtywater, day drinking isn't a good thing!
Why do so many people not get we weren't the top seed in 2018 with Irving, #2 seed Raptors were #1. We weren't #1 even when Irving got injured. We have talked about this a few hundred times yet multiple posters for some reason still think we were the #1 seed.
I wouldn't trade Tatum straight up for KAT. You wanna talk Hayward, Picks and some young players. That might make sense. Yet I don't know, KAT would change everything and how players fit and chemistry matter, look at Irving.
I love this team and frankly just think we need to upgrade the bench a little.
Davis looks great with a LeBron, that doesn't surprise anyone. For me the questions about him we're always can he be the main guy, best player on a championship team. Irving will look a lot better also with a healthy Durant next year. I wanted no part of basically having just Irving and Davis because they wanted Brown and Tatum.

I would trade Tatum and Smart for KAT. He's the best stretch big in the game. But not Hayward and Tatum.

So you are correct but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen. If the team decides he isn't good long term based on the fact they don't win with him for whatever reason, lazy D, then they could look to go something. I mean hey they aren't winning with him right now nor have they.

I would do trade Tatum. I would have done just Davis and Irving if they both were here long-term too. There's risk to keeping Tatum and he doesn't pan out to a superstar. He was always advanced for his age and NBA ready. We don't know if or even when that next step is going to come.

I would trade Tatum and Smart for KAT. He's the best stretch big in the game. But not Hayward and Tatum. Considering how Tatum and Smart play defense, considering how many killer moves Tatum got, considering the irreplaceable leadership by Smart and considering KAT hasn't won sh*t in the league, I'm not entirely convinced I'd trade either for him.

In my book Superstars carry teams to the playoffs and Playoff wins. Most overused word in Basketball. I don't see Tatum being a Superstar, though he has a chance. Yet he should be an all-star and a great two way player. Just my two cents but you make trades like that 4-5 years from now if the team is stuck and needs a change.

What has he accomplished? Putting up numbers without winnings games? Now in his 5th year he has only one winning season, one trip to the playoffs and one playoff win and that was with Butler as the leading scorer. Then Butler wanted out because he couldn't stand how they acted and didn't value winning over everything else. Now Butler has turned around the Heat with not much talent. He's a very skilled player, but something is missing. I have zero issues that Tatum will play hard and that he's a winner. He proved that as a rookie helping us win a bunch of playoff games. Takes horrible shots? Marcus Smart takes a bunch of horrible shots, Tatum doesn't. He's just had a stretch were easy layups aren't going in, yet he's been very good in his career at that, so I see no reason to worry. Unlike KAT he didn't have a ton of seasons with no pressure, while playing very little D to practice his scoring. He's more like Leonard in that he had played for a winning team since a rookie. It's harder to develop that way and it takes longer. I wouldn't mind KAT if he's your second or third guy. Kinda reminds me of Cousins, tons of talent but he can't be the best player on a team. After Irving I want no part of guys like that unless they are had for very little cost, not Tatum! Ask yourself does he fit our culture of team play and playing tough D? If you wouldn't trade Tatum for Davis, you don't trade him for KAT even though he has more years.

KAT would be the second or third guy on this team if you traded for him. You'd have Brown, Kemba, Langford, Smart, and KAT. That's a really good nucleus too. You know? Sure, you're giving up a good chunk, but Hayward isn't projected to be here long-term and Tatum is about to get the max (or close to it) whether he's a superstar or not. KAT is a guy who puts up the numbers and is a regular double double machine. Who will put up 20+ points and 10 rebounds a game. He doesn't have the durability questions either. I like the player, but I figured there'd be a lot of people who wouldn't like his game.

Hayward has no projection, he could easily be here or not - no one knows.
Tatum has taken steps forward this year. Here are a couple of them:
1. Defense is greatly improved 2. He’s a stronger rebounder 3. He’s stronger overall (look at his shoulders and arms he’s way bigger - might be part of his finishing problem as he gets used to his size) 4. He’s not finishing but he’s getting to the hoop easily whereas before he was weak and he’d easily get stripped going to the basked and not even get a shot off) 5. Better shot selection 6. Play making for others is improved. 7. FT attempts are up.
Honestly, if he starts finishing at the rim his numbers explode. Are you really overly concerned that he won’t get back to finishing at an above average level at the basket? This isn’t a guy throwing bricks; he’s missing layups.

Even accounting for the difference between the NBA and MLB, that's a HUGE distinction between the 2 scenarios.

One thing we can all agree on is that the C's look like they are going to get the short end of the stick once again when it comes to getting a lottery pick via trade. Last year the Kings pick conveyed a lot lower than anyone thought as they almost made the playoffs and now things look like they will repeat themselves with the Grizz pick.
The Grizz have gone 9-6 over their last 15 games and are even winning on the road against good teams. I know it is early and they are young yadayadayada but they also have zero reason to tank and plenty of motivation to win. I wouldn't be surprised if they make the playoffs at this point.
It looks like they may have had some luck with the Romeo pick so who knows maybe they get somebody good but it would have been nice to get real lucky and get a top 3 pick from one of those picks. But as I have mentioned before, the Celts have been snake bitten when it comes to luck and the draft for a long long time.
