Mookie Betts traded as part of a three-team deal
|
Post by thegoodthebadthesox on Feb 9, 2020 18:34:17 GMT -5
For what it's worth, most of my Yankees fan friends aren't psyched about this trade. The Sox likely weren't going to be the heaviest competition to them this year with Mookie so now one of the teams that actually does project to compete with them for a World Series just got a hell of a lot better and the Sox improve their outlook in the long-term when they will actually be "ready" to contend.

OK outfielder, risky 2B prospect, depth catcher. Cool. 2020 will be dismal. The right side of the field is subpar, and the pitching is likely to be pretty brutal. The only real upside is clearing money. This barely moves the needle on a depleted system. Was weak before, and it is weak now. With a weaker Sox. Fun. I get some people are just going to be negative about this no matter what but Verdugo is much more than just an okay outfielder, Jeter Downs more than a risky 2b prospect (I mean, all prospects are inherently risky), and Wong could be a part-time major leaguer. Stop trying to downplay the return just because you don't like losing Mookie. It's a good return. First off, it was Mookie AND Price (and half his pay). I think the latter has real value. So you trade away your #2 starter and best player. Fine. Defensible, but clearly that is a huge hit. In return, you have a RF who may be ok, but is obviously nowhere near Mookie. You get a 20-year-old 2B prospect in his 3rd organization with power and a lot of strikeouts. And a catcher who might not even project to make the majors. So the question is... when will real benefits come from this? Well... Downs is a bit away, so figure that still means both guys for Verdugo for about 2 years. The freed money better go to a big FA signing... and if that happens, maybe the team is back in business. But without spending that money well, the team is worse for this trade.

Painful day in Sox history, but this was a necessary move, and I think it will ultimately prove to be a shrewd move.

Gotta give credit where credit is due, Gammons prediction wasn’t that far off

So Bloom can play hardball. He gambled on getting a starter and when the medicals didn't pan out he went back to the well. The leverage he had is clear: the Dodgers really want Betts on that team this year.
The return does a bit to shore up the system. And the guy may not be done yet. Here's to a strong effort at signing Betts when he hits free agency.

Leave it to Yankees fans to be looking ahead to the World Series before the season even starts, a few months after a wild card team won the championship.

I don’t hate the return, but I’m not excited about it either. Still think they should have held onto Price and not sell low on him like this but oh well. I give Bloom a C+ on the trade with a chance to go up to an A if he signs Mookie next year.

Great to be the Dodgers.
They get Price, Mookie, Graterol, Comp B pick, outfielder prospect from Twins, plus prospects from the Strippling/Pederson deal. No one will touch their pitching and they get 2 MVP's playing in the top 3 spots in the lineup.
I don't know why Dodgers fans are mad. It's arguable that they got more.

I haven't seen a mad dodger fan. Friedman killed it.

I’ve said all along that if they end up signing Betts, this was brilliant. I just don’t think that will happen. This trade absolutely hinges on how the money gets spent. Verdugo is not a guy who stars on a championship team. He might start on one, but he is not an MVP replacement. At least one of two things must happen for the Sox not to have a few years in the wilderness: Devers has to keep improving and they need to sign a top-line, MVP candidate FA.

I still don’t like trading Price but I’m okay with getting our future second baseman and unloading half his salary.

Alright, now that this is finally over, I'm going to say that I'm excited to see Verdugo in Fenway. He has sneaky power to LF and I see him being a doubles machine. I hope his defense is above average and that he learns a thing or two from JBJ this year. He did hit a deep HR to RF in Fenway last season. The one thing that stands out to me about Verdugo is how awful he finishes with his front foot, if they’re able to correct that so that he swings over a stiff front foot, it might unlock even more of his power ala Xannder.

I learned an unnecessary amount about Brusdar Gaterol. Can someone breakdown the new return? Are we happy now?

Well, if Robert Van Scoyoc (JDM's hitting coach) didn't straighten him out, hard to believe that is possible.
