It's that I have Nesmith and Bane rather close and the difference from Anthony/Maxey to Pritchard is massive.
I also think Anthony has one of the highest upsides in the draft.

Once again I may be a biased unc fan but I think Anthony is gonna be an absolute steal for the magic and maybe the best player in the draft overall. Thats got a lot to do with me not liking any player in this draft a whole lot and maybe overrating Anthony but we'll see. I don't see it and Nesmith is an elite shooter like right now. You don't need to project anything with him, while Anthony is probably a long term kind of guy.

Anthony was really only healthy for the first few unc games and he made some great plays. His block against Oregon was nuts. Thats just one play I know but he got hurt shortly after. Its a big if but I think if he can stay healthy he will be a good player. Nesmith had one of the highest floors in this draft i think though. At the very least hes a sharpshooter which every team needs. Hes a better fit for the Celtics right now.

I hope Nesmith is crazy elite shooting,he looked good shooting on tape. He just didn't do much else.

Nesmith- Grade B
Pritchard- Grade B-
Pick 30- Grade F unless it's different than two Grizz second round picks
Madar- Grade B+
I get Nesmith, yet the draft was filled with Shooters that did more. Let's hope he's Duncan Robinson with slightly better D. I just don't like how he drives, very little creation and so-so D. Bane was a much more complete player.
Pritchard again I get, he fills a need and can play day one. Yet again he's limited, his D could be bad and limited upside. I don't love a first round pick that can't play with Walker either. What the difference between him and Grant Riller?
I don't know what Danny was thinking with pick 30
Yam Madar is a guy I like. If you didn't want to bring in a two way guy, it's a great pick.
I can understand it, Danny played it safe and took players at areas of need with high floors. Yet I can't help feeling this could look bad in a few years. I hope I'm dead wrong though. I wasn't a fan of moving up, yet I now wish we did.

I hope Danny knows what he's doing and doesn't let the roster crunch have him make a bad trade. The value of this draft is the depth, not the top of the draft. Honest question. It does seem to be deep with many guys being mocked and ranked up or down 15+ spots in some cases. But is it deep or overall just weak? Seems like the hype machine in this day and age can make guys who will never play more than 5 minutes a night have the potential to be special. Look back at drafts historically and how many guys ever become more than a role player, especially in drafts like this one. This draft might be deep or it might just have fewer guys than normal ever make a contribution. It can be exciting to think about the what ifs like draft and stash guys or getting the next Draymond Green but the fact remains the C's are very young and getting younger isn't in their best interest right now. The thought of moving up is intriguing but how far up can they go, all 3 picks and GH to get in the top 3? Not trying to be a Debbie Downer but we get excited every year and usually it is a let down. Having said that once again I am excited to see what they do, just like the last 40+ years. And I think I would trade GH and all 3 for Wiseman. As I predicted.

The Celtics seemed to have a safe draft that in theory should make their bench better. Nesmith should displace Semi in a heartbeat. Pritchard should displace Wannamaker. Both have better upside than Wannamaker and Semi.
The problem is the Celtics still don't have a real big man starter and now we are past the draft. The Hayward situation still remains totally unclear too.

My day after draft thoughts... my biggest needs going into this draft were shooting, bench shooting and a backup point guard.
Not having scoring and any real snipers off the bench really hurt the team and at some point you need to go with team building and put the pieces together. How many raw shooting, defensive athletic guys can you try and develop at once? Unless they are giving up on Langford (they aren’t), then the Nesmith pick makes a ton of sense. I know many wanted Anthony or Maxey here, but neither fits as well into the Celtics roster as a long knock down shooter. Obviously, this depends on Nesmith’s shooting translating. I like that he’s a gym rat and a hard worker and he’s not lacking for confidence which is also great. So sign me up for Nesmith, I think his length and intelligence will make him a solid enough defender that he’s not a negative there and he can actually be good off the ball in a team concept. If he’s a deadeye shooter off the catch and off screens, just imagine the space Tatum and Brown will have. We’ve never had that here.
Pritchard, not at all who I wanted or would have taken, but again, shooting will translate. Also; I always bet on work ethic and winning mentality on the court and this guy has it in spades. He’s not a sexy player, so people are down on him, but we’ve seen these types of guys overlooked constantly and they go on to have roles in the NBA. Part of me wishes they got more or a long term Kemba replacement but this is the end of the round and they needed a second unit guy who can shoot now. Point guards are always the deepest position in the draft, and teams are always trading starting caliber PGs around the league so I get going with this guy.
The draft and stash dude, I’m cool with - actually looks like a future player even if it’s in the Shane Larken role for a couple years. Dotson went undrafted, maybe they can get him on a 2 way...
I am not sad they didn’t draft a big... with a Theis and Williams and Williams when would he play? They will likely target a big in a trade of Hayward or with their MLE money which is what they should do because they need a big who can play now in a specific role.
I don’t want to grade the draft because we always knew this was a draft for role players but since we had so much hype due to the wait, we feel we got short changed.
Oh last comment on Nesmith... let’s not act like he has no upside. He’s very Middleton esq with the size and athletic ability so there’s some upside with him too that will all stem off how well he shoots it.

Current roster:
Ball-handlers (5): Walker, Smart, Waters, Pritchard, Edwards
Wings (4): Tatum, Brown, Nesmith, Langford
Bigs (3): Theis, R Williams, G Williams,
That’s 12, but decisions looking from Hayward and Kanter.
There’s buzz that if Kanter opts in he’s the one traded to Memphis which means VP isn’t, team probably hopes Kanter opts out and they can trade VP.
It’s possible they don’t keep both Edwards and Waters.
Semi has a team option. I’m 50/50 on if they exercise that.
Jevonte Green is non-guaranteed so I expect him to be cut.
What happens today with Hayward and Kanter will shape the rest of this roster.
Taco will return with one of the 2 way contracts.

My issue with Nesmith is I’m not sure the Celtics generate enough driving gravity to utilize his skill set. Tatum is an otherworldly outside shooter, but really not dynamic as a driver/finisher. Same for Kemba. Having a player like Maxey who has great finishing/floater equity plays so well off Tatum and Kemba’s skill sets.
What you saw last year in the playoffs was the Celtics falling into stretches where their offense stagnated while the Heat and Raptors took away their outside advantage creation through box and one and zone. Now the rest of the league is on notice, and Nesmith probably doesn’t help a whole lot to neutralize the problem. Nesmith is not an answer to the problem. Nesmith is an answer once the problem has been solved.
The thing I liked about Hampton and Maxey is that they offer real ability to penetrate such schemes in such a way that they reopen Tatum’s splashy outside shooting and advantage creation for Kemba and Brown.
Edit: and I’m not gonna get into why picking a fourth year, undersized, unathletic point guard is a bad use of a first round pick.

After scouring twitter (my mistake!) I'm resigned to nothing happening and years of reports that Danny was ::this close:: to getting Late Lottery Breakout Guy or trading Hayward for Bump from Change of Scenery Guy. Part One seems likely given who fell into 10-13. We'll see what happens with Hayward today.

Prichard feels like using the 26th pick to fill a need instead of getting a free agent. It's not a BAD use of a 26th pick in general, but I'd have rather taken a bigger swing in the context of THIS draft. A smidge more upside and downside than working the market. Cheaper I guess.

The teams biggest need was perimeter shooting off the bench and Tatum Brown and Walker will all benefit from a sniper on the perimeter more than from a guy who can’t shot but has a floater. Regarding Pritchard, if he turns into a solid rotation piece then he’s worth a late first round pick. Most of those guys don’t amount to anything. Also, it’s better for them to use a first round pick on him than have to use exception money to sign a second rd pick. Let’s see what happens.

Jevonte is cheap with upside so I think he'll be on the roster. Kanter likely opts out, more $ out there for him somewhere and I believe VP was traded last night. Our biggest bigs right now are DT and RW with GW as back-up aka it's thin, and we now have 5 lottery picks and more at Wings, so the depth is there to trade Hayward and get a big, Myles Turner. I think the delay to make a decision is the negotiating part of a sign and trade.

I don’t disagree but if Pritchard can come in and play right away and give 12 good minutes with 40%+ from 3 then I’ll be happy with the pick. I get the argument to go Riller over him, but I understand why they didn’t go with more of an upside play. It’s hard to develop guys if they aren’t playing and on a team that has high expectations it’s hard to develop guys. Trust me, I love Tyrell Terry and think not taking him was a mistake and possibly a huge one.

Someone else would likely sign him to their roster. Like the Knicks or Pistons would be silly not to since they are rebuilding and need cheap players to keep cap space.

That report regarding Kanter makes little sense to me as the option is his. VP was complaining about playing time. Kanter has some real value too so I think that report is up to late speculation. I'd bet it's VP.

While people may strongly disagree, I've seen some fairly well-respected/connected folks who say that Danny likely won't want Myles Turner.

From The Athletic on Prichard: More here ($). I like the back-and-forth format. I hadn't heard of Sam Vecenie of The Athletic before this draft but his reports and draft guide (an NBA version of Dane Brugler's NFL Beast) were awesome.

I think Vecenie was the Draft Guy for SI a while back.
EDIT - Nope. Sporting News.

Sure, I assumed Turner because of the reports, if not Turner perhaps another big is targeted. With the first pick last night we appear to be overloaded at one position (Wings). Okay at Ball handlers and Very thin at Bigs. BTW who would of guessed we have 7 lottery picks on our team?
