I doubt if he will be ready either, it was always a sketchy question because his original return date was always July but but that isn't the IL. If he's not ready for opening day, why wouldn't they put him on the IL? It's 10 days this season. I get it's a 30-man roster, but they're not going to carry a guy who can't play either. I'm sure it can be backdated as well. Could be, this year in particular because there are no minor league games to rehaab in. I'm figuring a healthy McHugh and/or Lucroy would be worth a ton at the trade deadline so, let's hope he doesn't take too long.

Eh, I really don't think there's going to be a lot of trading this year, for practical reasons. We'll see though.

Eh, I really don't think there's going to be a lot of trading this year, for practical reasons. We'll see though. I think the opposite. With a 60 game season, there are likely to be teams in the race who might consider it a one time chance to go for the brass ring. Lucroy and McHugh would both be appealing to teams with tight budgets.

Maybe, but beyond the logistics of what Chris is referring to, what significant talent would a Lucroy or McHugh, guys taken off the scrap heap, really be worth? Negligible. Doubt anybody is going to give up anything significant because Lucroy had a nice 100 AB stretch or McHugh got through 25 innings healthy and effective. You'd probably get some AA middle reliever. Like Chris, I doubt there's much trading this season and if so nothing too large. You're not going to give up any significant part of your future for this season.

Have we determined if you can do players to be named in trades to get around the current rules of only trading guys on the 60 man roster?
I think you could see tons of trades, it just depends on what you can get. Yet in theory I agree with Phil you could see teams doing stupid stuff because they feel this is their best opportunity.
At the same time I also wouldn't assume we are sellers either though. If McHough is pitching lights out and ERod comes back and Evoldi is pitching well, we likely go for it no? This season is perfect for a team that lacks starter depth and even without Betts we still have a bunch of talent.

If the Red Sox take on no additional salary and the season plays out, they are under their target threashold. There will clearly be teams that are strapped for cash. Hypothetically all of their one year guys are in the mix. JBJ, for example, would have limited takers because of his salary but, not if the Sox ate all of his salary except minimum wages.
Short season, guys doing well with injury histories who have performed in the past will also be going for premium prospects. Using the Angels as an example, if they are in the mix, they are going for it and that applies to several clubs all over baseball, some in our division. It just takes a bit of creativity.

Have the sox filled the 60 spots yet? I have not seen much action here. I see the sox roster projections but not much activity on the official side.

I would think that even with a chance that a team normally has that they wouldn't put all their eggs in the 2020 basket, a season that could end at any time and has a very non-zero chance of not completing. A Lucroy wouldn't fetch much more than a AA middle reliever in a trade. I don't think any team is going to make a big trade given this year's uncertain status.

As I texted to Ian this morning, I think they might be holding off on filling out the 60-man to see what pitching becomes available before the season starts, whether on waivers or, perhaps, trade (as complicated as trading now becomes). It's clear at this point ERod is starting the year on the IL (the season starts in 11 days and he's not even in camp yet - there's no way he's going to be stretched out in time), so we're looking at something like an Eovaldi/Perez/Weber/Johnson/bullpen day headlined by Mazza and Springs. That's.... not good.
I still think we're going to see very little in-season trading, but I could see a move or two before things officially start.

Roenicke says cuts to Pawtucket site coming Friday and that they're meeting on the final 10 spots today.

The closing: The executives all believed trades will be made, with the excitement and possibilities that await during that September stretch-drive leading to all sides involved to figure these sorts of things out.
Until then just understand why we might have to wait a bit longer for the usual mid-summer flurry of transactions.
"IF" we make it to Aug 31st, the reluctance level will go down significantly.

Yeah my point is it spelled out the concerns I had and how it will depress the usual number of trades. We'll have to wait and see.
I think it's really just a matter of getting to that point, like you say, and how things are then. Predicting the future right now has proven to be folly.

Question for the present. Have they ruled on Price's luxery tax load yet ? Aaron Sanchez is still out there and I doubt if many teams will look to take on contracts right about now.

Isn't Aaron Sanchez still injured and won't pitch until at least 2021 anyways? True. But, looking forward, it might be smart to pick him up, put him on the 60 day IL, with first rights to sign him for 2021 at a mutually accepted pillow contract incentivized deal. 2021 Sale, ERod, Eovaldi, Sanchez would be a very strong foundation as several top SP prospects begin to emerge.

At this point he'd be a flier. It's been quite awhile since he's been an effective pitcher. I'm not against the idea. Depth is important but I wouldn't really label him as part of a very strong foundation. Sale and Eovaldi are big health question marks going forward and so would Sale. The Red Sox need a huge minor league question mark to step forward - Groome would be that guy. He's the only guy in the upper level capable of being a front-line starter. I still think of Mata as a back-end guy. And I can't think of any starting pitching prospects anywhere near being ready. The hope would be that Song can eventually pitch and be effective with the layoff and that Perales blossoms as hoped for and isn't just the next Anderson Espinoza.

It's not a ruling thing - the sides haven't even discussed the CBT issues related to this year yet (which is absolutely bonkers to me). It's collectively bargained, so it's not something the league can just rule on.

It’s weird to think of Groome as an “upper level” guy. He hasn’t ever pitched above Greenville and that was 2017. Agree that it would be fantastic for him to make a big step forward.

Jeez, you're right. That makes the future starting pitcher picture look even more bleak. By now he should be in AA given the time he's been in the system, but yeah, you're right - he has yet to conquer A ball. They really have nobody in the upper system other than Mata who might be a #4 type guy if everything broke right. My overall point that I was trying and failing to make is that there's few very in the system with the pedigree to be a #2/#3 type starter. I think when Groome was drafted there was legit hope he'd be that and I'm not ready to write that off - yet. Perales is exciting but that's it at the moment. The Sox have that kid they drafted who might be a back end starter - can't think of his name. He used to work in the Sox organization when he was younger. Ward is it? I have to look it up. I'd love to see what Song can do. He'd be a real candidate to be a rotation keeper down the road.

Why not? With his mediocre stats he'd fit right in and it gives them 5 bodies that are clearly starting pitchers in E-Rod, Eovaldi, Perez, Johnson, and Godley.
