Following kerfuffle on Tatis grandslam. There are definitely unwritten rules I believe in, but don’t hit a home run when you are up big? This isn’t football, where you can stop passing.
Any rule that breaks down to “don’t make people see me suck” is dumb.

He swung on a 3-0 pitch and hit a granny. it's pretty simple, you don't want to get taken yard, learn how to pitch. I know I didn't expect in this last series the Yankees to give our pathetic staff any quarter, and they didn't. As we've seen over the past few years with the launch angle era, no lead is ever really safe, and I'd sure as hell take a Tatis on our team.

Any rule that breaks down to “don’t make people see me suck” is dumb. I just read an article that summarized it. It was so surreal. Basically it went: [Exciting young player does fun and awesome thing that helps his team.] Player's manager: "Well, he wasn't supposed to do the fun and awesome thing that helped our team, so I made sure he understood that." Opposing team: "We really don't like that he did that fun and awesome thing. In particular, in that situation we wanted our opponent to not try so hard at baseball." Exciting young player: "I am sorry I did the fun and exciting thing to help my team. I've learned my lesson; next time will be different." Baseball can be so, so, so dumb.

I remember that 25-8 win against Florida in 2003. I went two days later and saw the Red Sox carry a 9-2 lead into the 8th inning and watched as down to their last out some future "albatross" (haha) on the Marlins named Mike Lowell hit a 3 run-HR into the bullpen to put the Marlins ahead 10-9 cap off Florida's comeback. Hell, I was even at Yankee Stadium on 6/25/87 when Roger Clemens, pitching for the good guys, was staked to a 9-0 lead in the 3rd inning. Suffice to say, I was pretty pissed off and embarrassed when the Yankees walked off the Red Sox in the 11th inning, a 12-11 defeat of the Red Sox. This, I'll give up now that I have an insurmountable lead stuff is a bunch of nonsense. Play the damn game and stop whining about a team kicking your tail in. Play better. Stop being a bunch of babies. It's sometimes like players like to suck the joy and emotion out of playing baseball, as if being robotic is where it's at.

The Tatis thing is the worst, it exemplifies what’s wrong with baseball. When you have an image problem and a problem with your biggest stars not being flashy enough to garner national attention outside the sport, you embrace this kid not make him apologize. www.instagram.com/tv/CECR_tLhg_f/?igshid=8ix03ztqfas3

The year was 1967. Sox were in last place and down 10-0 when Jose Tartabul threw a bullet to home to keep the difference at 10. I don't know where the bullet came from because Jose was the anti-Evans of his era. Sox went on to win 11-10 and the rest of the year is history. I was sitting with my mother in right field directly behind Tartabul. I'll never forget that game. Their opponent (don't remember who) should have tried to push across a few more runs.

So what's the deal with Mike Yastrzemski? He has now put up 4 fWAR in 131 career games. But he didn't even make the majors until he was 28. Is he for real? Or is all this just a fluke?
Follow-up question - and then I'll take the answer off the air - why didn't the Red Sox draft him? He was taken in the 14th round in 2013. Wouldn't it have been worth the PR/goodwill for the Sox to take him in the 12th or 13th round, even if they thought he never had much of a chance at making the majors? How a) cool, and b) useful would it be to have him on our roster right about now?

But the Sox did draft him from h.s. He went to college instead, though.

Just read about the Tatis thing. Gibaut is a chump. Getting hurt feelings isn't an adequate excuse to throw at people.
I wish they hadn't cowed Tatis into thinking he did anything wrong. As far as I'm concerned, he didn't. He treated a s***ty pitch the way it deserved to be treated. If Gibaut doesn't like that, he should suck less. He's a professional athlete. Tatis is paid to beat his ass, and vice versa. Stop cowering behind this "unwritten rule" trash in an effort to hide the fact that you can't do your job.

The Tatis thing is embarrassing and infuriating all-around, but Tingler throwing his young star under the bus for literally doing his job too well is probably the worst part of it for me.

I was wondering how much of a home-field advantage teams would lose without fans in the stands, and all the other stuff that's interrupted the normal routines. Well if I added it up right, it looks like home teams are 171-166 so far, a .507 winning percentage. Apparently the normal home-field winning percentage is .530. If one of our series against the Yankees had been at Fenway, presumably home teams would be below .500...

Sounds potentially bad for James Paxton. I have mixed feelings. Much as I hate the Yankees, I actually really like watching him when he’s well (and preferably on a different team). I hate seeing really talented pitchers spend their careers going injury to injury.
