Your response to their three best hitters hitting home runs is to say this is why the lineup sucks. Really impressed by your commitment to the bit! I do think if you weren't so irrational about Verdugo you'd feel better about the lineup. If you feel good about Devers, Bogaerts, JDM, Verdugo, and Vazquez, and think Moreland is holding down 1B okay, it would be hard to say the lineup sucks. Well, they are a smidge over average for runs and below league average for OPS+. So if “sucks” is too strong how about “statistically below average”? Maybe you have a different explanation. Fine. But — for example — how one includes CVaz in the *strengths* category when he has an OPS+ of 89, which is higher than his career average — and last season, his massive breakout year, was a robust 103 OPS+ — is beyond me. I like him. I think he is a generally good catcher. But he is not a good hitter. Add: as for Moreland, dude is obviously out of his mind this year. That balances the disappointment of some of the stars. But just as we can fairly say that over a full year Devers and JDM would be much better, so too can we fairly say Moreland would be much worse. He averages 1.2 bWAR a year as a Red Sox. OPS+ of 109. And he is about to be 35. I don’t think he has finally turned into Lou Gehrig. Well are we talking about what the lineup is or how it's performed so far? If it's the former, then you'd expect Devers, JDM, and even JBJ and Benintendi to get better, even if Moreland could be expected to get worse. And Vazquez' offense is at least adequate for a catcher. If it's the latter, then you'd have to say they're a pretty average offense so far, but then you can't complain about how Moreland is likely to regress to the mean. But for what it's worth my comment was assuming we were talking about the former (which is why I characterized Vazquez and Moreland the way I did).

But for what it's worth my comment was assuming we were talking about the former (which is why I characterized Vazquez and Moreland the way I did). Is. If we talk about how it looked going into the season, based on expectations founded on career performance, we’d have to say what we are seeing from CVaz is... about right. JBJ is worse than his normally not-good performance (though his lower OPS is exclusively based on reduced power... his BA and OBP are pretty typical); Moreland looked to be very average... and has been great. Even Pillar has overperformed. Benny is the tricky one to me. I figured he’d be like last year: not so good, kind of a weak spot. But obviously no one could imagine that catastrophe. Anyway, I never expected this to be a balanced attack. And as I’ve said elsewhere, they also lost their primary table setter. Add: let’s put it differently: it was easy to see four spots in the lineup at 100 OPS+ +/-5. JBJ, CVaz, and 2b were certain to be under 100; Moreland likely to be just over. Add in Benny as a question (he was exactly 100 last year, so call it a bounce back at 110) and you have 4-5 slots that were clearly hovering around average and in danger of being below average. AND... those were not stretches. They were highly likely. So if the other four were hitting gangbusters, that was likely peak performance. As I’ve said elsewhere, I anticipated this lineup being not very good, but it is not quite how I’d have expected with Moreland subbing for one of the guys who seemed more a lock to put up his numbers.

Verdugo is clobbering the ball tonight; 104mph fly out, 109mph double, and another double at 105mph. All 3 in the air too, lol

Sox demolished every ball in play that inning, Cobb's really lucky it was just the 2 runs

What a nightmare. Played themselves out of contention and now they're winning.

What will come first: Pillar traded, or Pillar Evel Knievel’s himself?

Taylor had him down 1-2. Should have gone with the slider rather than the elevated fastball. Easy to say in hindsight.

Alex Speier @alexspeier · 10m Brasier, incidentally, is suddenly featuring a crazy fastball. Tonight: Threw 10 four-seamers, resulting in 8 swings and 6 swings/misses, averaging 96 mph. Everyone reacts to small samples in the days before the deadline. Brasier may suddenly garner interest.
