That Verdugo slide in left was stylish!
The LAA won today and the M's are creaming the Rangers. Our loss puts us just behind both of them. #GoodLoss.

Those rare games that go 15+ innings really stink for a variety of reasons, but this slow pitch softball stuff with a runner beginning extras on 2nd base is BUSH LEAGUE. It certainly won't get me too upset this season, but that nonsense has to GO moving forward.

Alex Speier @alexspeier · 10m Brasier, incidentally, is suddenly featuring a crazy fastball. Tonight: Threw 10 four-seamers, resulting in 8 swings and 6 swings/misses, averaging 96 mph. Everyone reacts to small samples in the days before the deadline. Brasier may suddenly garner interest. And Barnes going the other way. His value is tied to not being a closer. As long as its a 7th or 8th inning role he's fine.

Tom Caron @tomcaron · 8m Don't overlook the job Martin Perez did tonight. 7 strong innings - and was able to battle through a tough final inning (2 on, 1 out.). Increased velocity, sharp curveball, good command. 94 pitches, 62 strikes. ERA at 3.45 for the season. . . . Alex Speier @alexspeier · 11m Perez says he had more velo this outing after changing his strength training routine this week. He describes tonight’s start as his best of the season. ‘It was a great game.’

For me and for now, I am rooting for the trade deadline for a week or so. Martin Perez certainly increased his stock tonight and JBJ's HR didn't hurt..
We can get significantly more future value through trades than by lowering our draft position. Sept 1, I will be back to rooting for the draft.

That was my thought too but maybe he was overdoing it and was pitching with a tired arm. Either way, it's trade deadline time, that stuff sells. In the words of a restaurant owner I knew a long long time ago, you don't sell the steak, you sell the sizzle.

The 3 hitters thing is one that I like. Nothing more annoying than watching 3 pitchers warming up to pitch to three hitters. I don't care if LOOGYs lose jobs. The universal DH and 26 man rosters are definite keepers. I am split on the 7 inning double headers. I got used to that over the years in the minors.

Adding a high-quality college SP prospect like Jack Leiter has more value than a stockpile of lottery tickets like the kind we got for BWM and HH. I'm all in on having the worst record in the AL. I also don't think CB trades Perez. He has a 2021 team option for $6.25M. That's an incredible value for a guy who appears to be, at worst, a solid, durable No. 4 or 5 starter. Trading him and/or Moreland (team option of $3M) would be a major white flag on the 2021 season and I don't think CB will wave that flag. I expect to see JBJ go and I'm sure he'd like to move JDM, who is sure to exercise his opt-out after the 2021 season.

His value might never be higher than it is today after another strong performance, an inexpensive contract for the remainder of this year and next and how few teams are willing to trade with expanded playoffs. In fact, you likely got his potential replacement with either Pivetta and/or Seabold. Then next year you have E-Rod (hopefully), Sale by about June/July, Pivetta, Seabold, Eovaldi and the Red Sox could add Bauer to aid the rotation as well. Hopefully, by then someone in the Sox system like Groome starts to show they can at least be a 6th/7th in 2021. Plus, it’s not like you’re not getting something for Perez. We don’t know what said return is yet, but even assuming it’s just some high upside A-ball kid, they could always flip that asset for another starter, if they wanted to.

The difference between picking up a Leiter and picking up say an 8th pick for a draftee whose earliest reasonable timeline is late 2024 is more of a crapshoot than picking up someone who has AA experience. For me, a 2022 target is more reasonable, particularly in light of Sale's timeline for returning. Slow but steady gains. That also gives our young guys time without the pressure of having to perform. Expectations in Boston can be difficult. ADD: It's also unlikely that JDM opts out into the uncertainty of this years market. Every team in baseball is losing money this year. The three assets that I would like to take advantage of 2021 time are Moreland, Perez and Barnes. We can also have our cake and eat it too. How many games do you think the Sox will win without Moreland, Perez, Barnes, Pillar & JBJ ?

A lot of the Barnes negativity is over reaction. He's not a closer and won't ever be one. proven that before, just like Taz did when he was with the Sox. not all good late inning setup guys can handle the closers job and that is just 2.
Maybe Roenicke thought he owed Barnes the chance last night, or felt (probably) nobody else left, after brasier had already pitched had a chance, but he should probably rotate around both Brasier and barnes until he Taylor gets up to speed and Waldon back with the club to help out.

trade barnes for a bag of balls.....if any team is even willing to part with that. Barnes' trouble, obviously, is lack of control. He has a good enough fastball and a great curve. A third pitch would help. He wouldn't bring squat at present so he needs resurrection. Verdugo is what we hoped Beni would be (might be, will be?). Nice throw from shallow left but damn the runner was in cement. It was a terrible decision to send him.

I was not a fan of Perez before the season, but he’s looked good. If they have an option, I’d still shop him but with a higher price. I don’t know what he’d look like over a full season (he declined last year... I know, not a perfect arc, more up and down), but if he has a strong first half, he’d pair well with Sale. Anyway, a relatively cheap bird in the hand is better than, er, something in the bush? If they let him go, they’ll need to find someone much like him. ERod, Eovaldi, Perez, 1/2Sale, maybe Mata and/or Pivetta + TBA between trades and signings is not a championship rotation, but it is more competitive than this year. It is also far more interesting to watch.
