I hope Chris Martin is OK, he was a Red Sox feel good story a while ago.

I really wanted Darwinzon to pitch well there, but we couldn't have gotten a broken-bat bases-clearing bloop double? Meanwhile, O's WE was .892 but is now .845. As I've pointed out elsewhere, the odds that the Tigers have the same guy as we do at the top of their board when they pick 3 are slim. The odds that he's the Kevin McHale or Jarvis Tatum of the draft are even lower. It's also about .5 million in draft money, IFA money, DFA priority and Rule 5 priority.

Draft order doesn't impact IFA money, FYI. It probably will in the future when there is a draft, but right now it does not. m.mlb.com/glossary/transactions/international-amateur-free-agency-bonus-pool-money

Hmmm, I thought the lower seeds had more money to deal with. $.5m 2 years ago would have netted the HS kid from Andover

And the draft money is moot if the 3 and 4 picks both sign for slot; it really only matters if you have Carlos Correa in mind for your pick, a guy you can sign for under slot because he's further down everyone's list. And for Rule 5 picks and waiver claims, again, I've not that worried that the Tigers will be onto the same guys we are. And we're not talking about impact talents.

this is the play that scored the 5th run for the Jays, too. God I feel like the O's are so incompetent they will blow this in the 9th

They point is that most of that extra money would just go to the first round pick, because the third overall pick will demand more money than the fourth.

There's no difference in money you have to spend, versus the money you are expected to spend based on the available talent given your slot. You're double counting. If you have the 23 pick instead of the 7 pick, you don't say, "oh, and we also have much less money to spend!" The less money is the consequence of the pick; that's the system.

Exactly which draft has worked out that way ?

Meanwhile, O'Brien has insisted at least twice that the Brewers are going home if they lose, but right now the Giants and Phillies seem about to lose, which means the Brewers will be in. (He also said the Cards would go home if they lost, when that was never the case.)

If you look at it from a glass half full perspective, the fourth pick is still really good, there will be a lot of great guys available.
The Red Sox are also a better team than a lot of the teams that will pick behind them. We're also just better than the Tigers, even with a lot of the terrible pitching we had this year.
