I don’t think that second pitch was a 2-seam, it was 82. Could be a split like you say. Maybe a power curve? I don't think he throws a curve. He does supposedly throw a change at times. The pitch did have the late screwball type fade which is characteristic of his 2S. Anyhow it was an example of how a pitcher can "blow away" a batter with a 92mph fastball if it is sequenced effectively and located. Pretty sure that was just a slider

Sunday morning here, nice to come home to. Definitely going to watch this in archive.
The nice thing, Houck and Dalbec are still prospects.

It actually breaks gloveside, so it looked to me that it was a slider with less break, and Gamecast agrees. One of the things I figured out in my slider-effectiveness analysis was that changing breaks on a slider can be as helpful as changing speeds on pitches. With his normal break, that's a ball.

O's lose, but the Tigers are up 4-3 going into the 9th. And those are the only two teams left that matter.

Verdugo and Devers are both slumping to the finish line.

Verdugo and Devers are both slumping to the finish line. They also got completely jobbed on three strike calls between them in those two ABs.

Catching up live after a long phone call ... I always had this game down as a win (and last night as a loss). Tomorrow was always going to be the big one. Meanwhile, I don't think you can search on the first 3 games of a career at Stathead (the old Play Index). But this has to be among the best. 17 6 2 1 9 21. Ans two of those walks (at least) were K's! Only one player in the lively ball era has a lower ERA in a season with a minimum 15 IP and 3 GS, and that was another rookie, Mike Norris of the A's in 1975, at age 20.
He had a 16.2 6 2 0 8 5 line. And one of the unearned runs was from his own throwing error. And he only faced 1 batter (who he walked) in his third start, in April, after throwing 16 innings in his first two. And when he finally pitched again on 9/25, he came in with 2 outs and the bases full and allowed all three runners to score. And they lifted him when he gave up a hit and walk when he only got 1 out in the next inning. So an extremely bogus ERA.
So this may be the greatest rookie starting pither cup of coffee in MLB history. I'm going to look at K's and hits next.

Has there been a resolution of the Tigers/Cardinals having to make up their two games ?

Phillies eliminated, I feel bad for a team whose front office tried so hard but couldn't make the cut. If I recall correctly, they got fleeced at the trade deadline.

I looked for all pitchers in a season with 20 strikeouts who pitched 15 to 35 innings. Among the rookies, the guys tied for the best ERA, at 1.50, are James Paxton, Steven Strasburg, and Josh Beckett.

IOW, which ROY pitching candidates in MLB history have the most impressive stat lines under their belt before their actual rookie seasons> Houck's gotta be up there, even with the higher K rate in today's game.
Plenty of guys have started their career with 3 great starts, at the start of the season or midway, when they were deemed ready to do that on a regular basis. The September callup is a trial to see how you'll do.

Phillies eliminated, I feel bad for a team whose front office tried so hard but couldn't make the cut. If I recall correctly, they got fleeced at the trade deadline. Giants lose on SAT. Giants and Phillies live to fight another day. NEITHER ELIMINATED.STL vs. DET doubleheader is still on. Won't know if they are played until STL finishes game 58 with MIL on SUN. If STL wins game one on Monday, game 2 of the DH is likely still played. UPDATE: if SF wins on SUN and STL loses, STL goes to DET on Monday. SF 30-30 STL 29-29 with 2 on MON. Needs one win. has tiebreaker vs. SF otherwise, no games in DET on Monday.

Fair perception question.
Houck is 3-0 vs playoff teams. It's fair to say the Sox would likely be first pick if Matt Hall got those starts. Which do the posters prefer, Houck and the pick we get or Houck still at alt camp and a legit shot at the first pick.
For me, it would be Houck but not so much based on stats but based on the Pitching Ninja type stuff. He's tunneling three good distinctively different pitches with one of them being a ++ slider. I don't see how that doesn't play in the future.

Three games, three pitch mixes:
Tom Caron @tomcaron · 3h Houck is done for the night. His velocity was up 2 mph on avg tonight, and he threw his four-seamer 43 times - the most in a game yet. On the night he got 16 swings-and-misses, as much as his first two games combined. He'll finish the season with a 0.53 ERA. #RedSox

i prefer that the Sox beat the Jays a few more times and still be in the race.
FWIW, if the Mets had swept their DH today, they'd still be alive. And COLORADO. if they had swept theirs on FRI, they'd be alive.
